It's tough to gage exactly what the moose will need for a run because we don't know what type of players we're going to have. Will Ciampini end up being a scorer? Will Hannay, Abeltschauser, Gillard, and Desmarais be a solid defense on a contender? Will Frk be the superstar we hope he'll become? All speculation until next year or the year after. First thing we need right now is solid, consistent goaltending.

What games are you coming for? moosefan1994/eastcoastfan/howitzer/canbeer/qmaniac and I all sit on the same side. Be nice to get together for a beer between periods one of those games. Nothing finalised yet, I have a few things to sort out but if all goes to plan I'm hoping to make the Chicoutimi and Shawinigan games.

That game against Chicoutimi is the DND appreciation game so I'll probably be at it. Might have to pop over.

Id prefer to stay away from Martel... Yeah, I know nothing about him but I know he was ppg player this year but left Baie Comeau. Is there anyone out there you think the Mooseheads could trade for? I would think they need a 19 or maybe 18 year old scoring centre. Ive looked over the rosters...I dont see anyone obvious that jumps out at me as being a perfect fit. They are either too good and could go pro, or they dont seem good enough to be a legit #1 centre, or their team likely wont deal them.

Turbide is a center as well but we could also end up with Nathan Mackinnon as a center next year and chances are I could see us trading for a center who would be an overager for 2011-2012 as we'll only have Randall and Corbeil as 20s for that year. I prefer Turbide on the wing but they seem to keep trying him as a centre...he is too slow and gets caught behind the play on a regular basis...playing wing would allow him to perhaps use his size a bit more and 'cheat' a little as he is a slow skater.

With regards to this topic, its a strange one to answer because we werent really winning much yet but played well in most games, most fans were happy with what they were seeing... then the coach was fired. Since then, they had a great win, and 2 losses.
I`ll comment on a few although I havent seen as many games as others.
Frk has been basically what we thought... better passer, not as much shooting as we thought. PPG so far and really hasn`t adapted fully and doesnt really have anyone to act as his playmaker. You can see the transition to this league has been a bit of struggle but the potential he shows is great.
Gelinas has really stepped into an offensive leadership role. He showed a fearless style last year taking it to the net, and this year he is playing with even more confidence.
Bety/Grant/Randall have all underwhelmed, mostly Grant who plays pretty hard but we need his offensive skill more than his hard work. Randall could be chipping in more offensively, as could Bety who has a hard shot. As a line, they arent very effective. Maybe if they get on the road and have time to gel without the home crowd pressure. Ciampini has the nose for the net and has lots of potential but needs more time to adapt. Ryan has that lanky, goal scorer frame who looks to be getting stronger and more confident. Ashley stood out to me early on, very smooth and looked like he knew exactly what he was doing, but he`s slowed down a bit as of late. Still, looks to be a very good player.
Demarais gave us stability where we didnt expect it early, but I find he`s playing more like a rookie lately. Love the toughness he brings, no fear in dropping the gloves. Amyot had a great start but has cooled down in his play although is still effective with that big reach. Clarke has hardly lost his head, and although prone to the odd dangerously dumb play, has really ate up the top minutes and played well at both ends. Overall the D group has been a pretty good core.
Corbeil has been inconsistent again, some nights he looks like nothing will get by that big frame of us, then other nights I wonder how on earth someone was able to score from an angle that he should be able to easily cover with his size. Terenzio is a sparkplug, tons of emotion, very quick, but a bit out of control and makes easy plays adventures at times. Overall goaltending has been inconsistent but not bad.
Other than the latest CB loss, Id say we have performed where we should have been and like most, expected them to improve gradually as the year moved on. But now with the greater expectations by Smith, hard to say if he will make a trade to get older, or if we will see much improvement at all as we dont know how good a coach he will be.

This team has underachieved so far. 5-12 wasn't what i was expecting. Frk, Desmarais, Ciampini, and Gelinas have been the best players. 3 of them are 16, and are leading the team in consistent play, while Grant, Bety, Corbeil and Abeltshauser have been invisible/awful. Boudreau looks good centering the top line, and Andrews and Turbide will come around. Don't think Ciampini is a center. Goaltending, which Cam said was the strong point of this team, has been awful. Guess that's why Cam isn't here anymore.
MVP: Marty Frk Worst Player: Grant/Bety/Abeltshauser

I'm not quite understanding the dissatisfaction with Abelthauser. He struggled at the start of the year but has improved noticeably lately- even before his GWG against Bathurst I thought he deserved a star that night for his defensive play as he was stopping rushes at the blueline every time he was on the ice the last half of the 2nd period.
Hannay is the returning defenceman who has struggled and mightily so far this season as he has gotten away from what made him so good last year which is playing within his limitations. He is taking dumb penalties consistently and getting beat by looking for the big hit- hopefully this will stop, maybe a night in the press box is needed.

Why are they continuing to rotate all the D pairings through Clarke. Think about the last several weeks; All the D have been paired with him. First Gillard and Clarke were consistent partners, then he had Bishop with him for several games, then Lewis, then Desmairas, Hannay's been with him a bit, then last game it was Clarke and Konrad until the 3rd when it was Amyot. Is the issue on defense Amyot, Konrad, Hannay or maybe it's Clarke? He had a strong start in training camp and then nothing much after that.

If I was going to rank the defensmen in order from best to worst (on how they are playing) than they would be... Amyot Gillard Clarke Abletshauser Hannay I didnt include Desmarais, Lewis or Bishop.

Very much disappointed with Hannay's performance to date. He lacks of hockey sense and takes untimely (dumb) penalties. Lewis would benefit from Hannay ice time. He showing much improvement and adjusting well. Easy choice to make IMO. Use the potential talent and leave the idlers behind.

If i was to rank them
1) Desmarais 2) Gillard 3) Clarke 4) Hannay 5) Amyot 6) Abeltshauser
Haven't really been impressed with Amyot or Abeltshauser... Desmarais has really impressed so far. Lewis has been alright in his few games, and Bishop hasn't shown 1st round talent yet. I do agree with Hannay makes some dumb moves sometimes

I think it's still a tad early to be getting into player evaluations and such, but what the hell. It's interesting to read other posters comments and observations and it creates conversation.
Defense:
Amyot - Good start to the season, but has cooled off a bit. Not an ideal 20, but he adds experience to a younger defense group.
Clarke - He's been mostly good but a little bad as well. Love the fact he hasn't taken too many dumb penalties, yet still continues to yap and frustrate the opposition. Would like to see him play with a bit more urgency and intensity (the good kind) and would like to see a few more numbers on the board. But overall he's been fine.
Gillard - He seems to be developing a physical side to his game which I like. He's been quietly very solid and reliable.
Abeltshauser - Inconsistant is the word that comes to mind. He could be a beast if he was stronger and a faster skater. He's mobile, but lacks foot speed. I think he's capable of more.
Hannay - Needs to relax. Of anyone on this team, he's one that needs to keep his game simple. He was effective last year but just making the safe chip off the glass and being tough. He's still been tough this year, but he's also taken penalties and gotten out of position being overly aggressive. Love the intent, but he needs to reign it in a little bit.
Desmarias - Well no secret he's been a huge surprise. He shows his rookie strips at times, but overall how can you complain about what he's come in and done. A leader in the waiting.
Lewis - He's been solid. Still basically a rookie, and hasn't played a ton, but he's been ultra competitive and like Gillard seems to love to be physical. Skating needs work tho.
Bishop - Slow start in camp and looked tentive early, but he played a couple games a few weeks ago and it looked like he turned a bit of a corner. It looked like he had figured a few things out. I'd like to see him back in the line-up.
Forwards:
Frk - As advertised. Tons of potential and top end talent. He's starting to look for his shot more. Acceleration needs some work, but for a 17 yr old rookie euro, he's exceded my expectations so far.
Gelinas - Has been out best player. He's been making plays and finishing. He's a tank along the boards and takes the puck to the net whenever he can. On pace for 30 goals this year and I can see 40 next year. Great pick last year in the 4th round.
Ashley - I agree with Joe, and I thought that exact thing last game....a very good start, but has seemed to hit an early wall. I'm not the least bit worried however. Shown great skill and competes every game no matter how bad he or the team is playing.
Andrews - He's played well. Great on faceoffs and is showing he can dominate with his size down low. Inconsistant offensively, but he's only 17. Looks to be developing into a great 2 way #2 centre.
Ciampini - Can't complain about 7pts in 12 games from a 16 yr old. He's even mixed in a few multiple point games along the way. He's got better every game. Hope he gets back soon.
Ryan - I've given him props from Day 1 in camp and still love what I see. Smooth, good size and skilled. Like Ciampini he seems to be getting better and more confident each game. I can't see him playing in the top 6 all year, but he's shown a lot in that time so far. Big building block for this team.
Bety - I wonder if him sitting out the early few games affected him at all? He's been decent. I think people know what he does and doesn't bring and so in that sense he's come in played hard and I'm sure is providing leadership in the room. Unforunately for a 20, he won't get ya much offensively.
Grant - To state the obvious, he's struggled. Gone from top line scoring threat to 3rd line checking role and pk. Not to much else to say. He's capable of more, and I hope he finds his game.
Lemieux - He's been a very pleasant surprise. I don't think many would have predicted 10 pts at this point in the season out of him. He's stuck behind some others for ice time, which is unfortunate, but he plays his ass off. You can tell he bulked up in the off season and his skating (esp. balance) has improved a ton. Good team guy.
Desjardins - I was hoping he could get some confidence early on offensively, but hasn't happened. He's not a "offensive" guy, but being one of the few veterans I was hoping he could score a few. However he doesn't seem to care because he's been a gamer in every game.
Randell - He's been Travis Randell haha. Not much offense, but has been playing hard, blocks a shit load of shots, and was a good choice for captain. Just wish as the only 19 yr old skater he could be more offensive, but it aint happening, so just appreciate him for what he does.
Boudreau - Sat out early on, but given a huge promotion to the top line recently. He hasn't looked out of place, but at the same time, I'm not sure he's going to produce a whole lot right now. Shown good playing making potential and good confidence on the PP.
Souligny - Limited ice, but he can play in this league. He's played hard when in the line-up and seems to have a nose for the net.
Turbide - Same as Souligny, he hasn't got a ton of playing time, but hasn't looked completely over matched. Love his size, but he doesn't seem to use it. Skating needs work.
Goalies:
Corbeil - He's gets discussed plenty so won't get into it other then to say he's been terribley inconsistant. I will say to his defence, that our defencemen (and forwards to a lesser extent) still need to work on getting the puck out of our zone. We've had a lot of turnovers which never helps a goalie. However as a 3rd yr vet and NHL draft pick, he can be better.
Terenzio - He's fun to watch in nets. Quick, athletic and competetive. Looks like he just loves to be out there. Gets a bit crazy and out of position at times, but I think he's been a bit better then expected personally.
