Two Gallants better than one Shuffling the deck: Sea Dogs release two 20-year-olds and have their eye on Brett Gallant's brother
PETER MCGUIRE Game on Published Tuesday September 25th, 2007 Appeared on page B6
There will be no free rides this season with the Saint John Sea Dogs.
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team made a bold statement on Monday when it announced it has released 20-year-olds Francis Charland of Victoriaville, Que., and Jordan Knox of Summerside.
The Dogs were expected to drop one of their four 20s to get down to the league-mandated three per team but it came as a bit of a surprise on Monday when Sea Dogs general manager and head coach Jacques Beaulieu made his announcement.
"We feel we can play Mike Thomas more and get Nicolas Pard in the lineup and get just as much from them," said the coach and general manager. "They just weren't getting the job done."
Always the wheeler and dealer, Beaulieu now has an open 20-year-old slot on the roster.
"We'll be very selective and if it takes until Christmas, it takes until Christmas," he said.
One interesting option would see Bradley Gallant of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles join the squad. He's the big brother of Saint John tough guy Brett Gallant. Bradley is Cape Breton's property but he doesn't appear to be part of the team's plans. The Eagles already have three 20-year-olds, including former Sea Dog forward Jonathan Laberge, Edmundston native and team captain Dean Ouellet and defenceman Beau Prokopetz of Winnipeg.
Having another Gallant in the lineup would surely make the Sea Dogs tougher but the young man can play the game, too.
This isn't just some dream scenario, either. The Sea Dogs have, indeed, inquired about his services but have not heard back.

It would seem to be a kind of destiny for the Gallant brothers to play together in this Brad's final season of junior. I say it's got a good chance of happening.

The dream scenario would be we get Brad Gallant. We play Lewiston at Harbour Station. Brett and Brad beat the snot out of Paquette and Marshall on the same shift. I'd pay money to arrange that actually.

If the eagles were smart the should also send Downer over there as well and give the kid a chance either this year or next to play in the Q and get something back in return like a pic or a player. I am pretty sure Downer couldn't go until Dec. but why not cut the ties like we did with Menard, Theriault and Dube

They're fine in goal with Mayer, Fullerton(why they keep an average 20yr old goalie i'll never know) and Passingham.

I don't know much about Mayer but since he is Euro and Passingham it young maybe could free up a Euro spot. I agree with you in both respects with regards to a 20 year old goalie who is average and downer getting limited time. Maybe they can unload him in NFLD for next year. I don't know but it is a sin to see him sit out without us getting compensation. Oh well time will tell.

Will Pascal make the Seadogs overpay for Gallant like the Seadogs did to him with Laberge last year?

Not likely, it's pretty much a buyer's market when it comes to surplus 20's like Gallant is.

I can see this happening, and if it does I dread how painful it would be to have Sea Dog posters going on about two Gallants....... it's bad enough with one! ;D

When Brett plays the games seem to get very entertaining . As soon as anyone brings him up after a game ,their are certain trolls who bounce from site to site who keep the posts going. That I agree gets tiring. One thing about one or both Gallants on our team, it makes for some great entertainment. Jack Bauer you are not going to have any problem making the playoffs you have a nice hard working team . But the way your team is made up if you like the extra physical activity you may have a very boring winter. With that good luck ,you spanked us the first game look forward to returning the favor.
