Good to see camp is getting underway a couple of days early.Just a few tidbits of information, young local goaltender Nick Walsh will be going to camp again this year, hope he does well.Hache is in town and I hear from a good source that he will not be making the trip to Russia. Nothing new on the status of Darcy. Not hearing anything on whether or not the Americans that we drafted will be coming to camp. Sure would like to see James Winkler show up.Should be a very interesting camp. With the exception of Dubois and O'Leary(if he shows),Ido not see too many of the other 16 year olds coming in and getting a spot unless they really shine.Wonder if the trip to Russia and the international exposure will help sway O'Leary to report?

Can't hurt the chances of O'Leary reporting that's for sure. Not saying it will sway him one way or another. I can see Dubois and Corbeil making it. Maybe Beaudin as well.

Cannot see much room on defence for 2 16 year olds.Even without Hache,I four locks on defence; Deschamps,Leveille,Bell and Lalonde. Then you have Nosella, a 19 year old who really improved over the second half. Then there is Baillergon,Dower and Paul, all who played some last year.Throw in the Americans, if they shoe, plus any free agents who might be added and there are not many spots left considering the norm is carrying seven defencemen.

I agree that only one of the 16 year olds being on the roster is the most likely scenario but I wouldn't totally dismiss the possibility of both of them making it. I certainly could see them both making it over Baillergeon, Dower and Paul. If say both of them are of the quality of Bradley Lalonde, how would you keep them off?

I certainly could see them both making it over Baillergeon, Dower and Paul. If say both of them are of the quality of Bradley Lalonde, how would you keep them off? That was my thought as Davey. Guess I could have worded it better. Have to keep in mind that the two 16 year draftees this year on defence have played together as well and are great friends. I think they have a realistic shot at making it if they come as advertised. As for Baillergeon, Dower and Paul just because they saw time last year does not mean they will been on the squad this season. These new draftees maybe better than them who knows till we see at training camp. I know it is not usual for two 16 year old's to make the d but it happened last year and these years 16's are both second rounders and were teammates/d partners. Have to take that into consideration. I do agree if the Americans show up then it is a different story. Also Nosella did improve big time but if these two 16 year old's are remotely better or have more upside then it is a no brainer. Keep the kids and ship Nosella out. Now I am not saying do that automatically but it is a possibility.

Outside of the kid taken at 5 , I don't think it is a good year to be a 16 year old trying to break this squad . When you factor in the number of returning players along with the very short Training Camp , the window of opportunity is tiny at best for any fringe players . Same could most likely be said for the majority of 17 year olds with possibly the exception of the kid from Baddeck . Sorry for not remembering their names .............maybe there is some truth to Alcohol killing brain cells .

I agree Hal I really can not see a 16 year old making this team other than Dubois. I can see one or two of them being packaged for an 18-19 year old def assuming Hache is not back. On TSN 1290 they had Coach Dumont on talking about Russia and he mentioned that the team has to be made prior to leaving on the 17th. When does training camp open^

www.capebretonpost.com/Sports/Hockey/2014-08-06/article-3826075/Russia-trip-will-make-Screaming-Eagles-camp-even-more-competitive/1Notable additions include Russian forward Evgeny Svechnikov, drafted by the team in the 2013 Canadian Hockey League import draft, Defenceman Justin Haché signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Arizona Coyotes and won’t be back, but he will be practicing with the club at camp. Forward Cameron Darcy, drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning this summer, won’t be at camp or go to Russia as he prepares for Tampa’s camp next month. Whether he’ll be back in Cape Breton or not depends on if he signs with the Lightning. “It looks like Tampa has a strong interest to sign him in September and they’ve established objectives for him to achieve this summer physically,” said Dumont. “In order to achieve those objectives, it was better of for him to stay and train in Boston.” Cape Breton’s fifth overall pick in the 2014 QMJHL draft, Pierre-Luc Dubois, will be in attendance, but No. 14 overall selection Michael O’Leary will not. O’Leary, of Halifax, committed to play with the Cornell Big Red of the NCAA. Dumont said he’ll continue to negotiate to bring O’Leary to Cape Breton.

Looks like Darcy won't be back.
If that's the case is the team not weaker this year than last year? -Darcy -Hache, +Svechnikov +Brassard.
Unless Svechnikov can match Darcy's 90ish points, I see us being weaker this year now.

Not sure it works like that. Would they be stronger with Hache and Darcy back ... of course. But they are stronger then last year with 13 players coming back with one more year of experience, one more summer of training and more confidence.

Unless Svechnikov can match Darcy's 90ish points, I see us being weaker this year now. There's no doubt going to hurt loosing Darcy but I don't think your weaker. Darcy was a strong faceoff guy and more then likely would have been around 100 points. But with him you would lose Legare. Who was a 30 plus goal scorer. Like you said you also have Svechnikov coming in. If he's able to put up 50 point and same with Legare there your 100 points you lost from Darcy. So that kinda washes it. Now would you be even better with Darcy then not having him. Simple answer is yes. Because then you lose Legare's 50 or so points but have Darcy's 100 and Svechnikovs 50 for 150ish from Two guys instead. You guys take a hit but not near as bad as you think. I'd still say you guys are the favourite to take the division.

Legare was our second leading scorer with 70 points last year (Darcy had 82). He was and should be a pretty good player - a very good 20 year old. There are a few things that Darcy brings to the table that we lose but I don't think this kills us at all if Darcy turns pro. Up front, we should expect improvements from Pelletier (he scored 50 points as a rookie), Lazerev and Simard, perhaps others. Brassard hopefully will solidify a position that was woefully inconsistent for the eagles last year - goaltending. We do take a hit at defence with the loss of Hache but the Eagles are very skilled, if quite young, on the blueline. How these younger players adapt to larger roles will be a key factor for the teanm this year.
I still see the Eagles improving this year but it will probably be a small step (2 - 4 places from last year) instead of a march to contendership.

Yeah that makes sense, I just kinda felt like Darcy really drove that line with Farrell and Legere and might have inflated their point totals a bit. I'm hoping Lazarev can stay healthy this year as the chemistry with Svechnikov will be huge for us.
