3 beautiful goals for Ehlers- the Winnipeg board on HF is salivating profusely at the thought of having him in the lineup. I imagine earliest possible return as of right now would be for him to be sent back at the end of the Jets training camp similiar to when TB sent Drouin back last year.
The saving grace for the Mooseheads as far as Nik coming back this year is his lack of NHL size and he has only played major junior for 1 season. But if he continues to impress the Jets may give him the 9 game audition and he wouldn't be back until late October-early November at the earliest if that happens.

Would Ehlers benefit from sticking with Winnipeg if he wasn't a top 6 winger? He has to take a spot from guys like Wheeler, Frolik, Ladd, Kane and Setogouchi. If he could benefit from being a 3rd line winger in the NHL more than he could benefit from lighting up the Q, then he'll stick with Winnipeg. But I can't see him making their top 6 and taking a spot from one of those guys listed above.
Detroit have younger scorers filling out their 3rd/4th lines. But they've all payed their dues in Grand Rapids and are used to the professional style of game. Plus of course they are in their early 20s.
I selfishly hope the Jets are patient with Ehlers and give him back to the Moose for at least one more season. But... if he stays in the NHL, great for him.

he will likely be back... but i think he's gonna get an extended look and likely the first 9 games before they make the ultimate decision..... that could mean he's gone until November

Setoguchi is long gone and was not a top 6 winger for them anyhow he won't supplant Wheeler and Ladd on line one.... but he could very well be slotted nto line two.... especially if they decide to move Kane as has been rumoured for a year and a half now

One thing is for sure, he's looked fantastic in this tournament. I think Toronto fans will be very sour about this in a few years.

Their top forwards are Kane, Ladd, Wheeler, Little, Scheifele, Perrault, and Frolik.
I don't see room for Ehlers in there. They also have Petan, Lipon, Cormier, and Halischuk all trying to make the jump.
You have to remember, this performance was against other rookies. Not full NHL calibre competition.
1 more year in junior makes complete sense for Ehlers. Another year to get bigger and stronger, play in all situations and work on his 2 way game, similar to Drouin last year.
The only question in my mind is do they send him back after main camp, or give him the 9 game look. My money is on the former.

Cormier is no longer an NHL prospect..... he isn't competing for the same spot Ehlers is

I think this performance being against other rookies is the key part here, as you stated. Now if Ehlers rips it up in exhibition I can see Winnipeg giving him that extended look over 9 games, much like they did a short while ago when Scheifele had an amazing pre-season. If Ehlers doesn't do much in exhibition games I think he's back in Halifax right away and doesn't get the 9 game look-see.

That would be at least a player NHL ready if not more than one.

He played 16 minutes last night and failed to get on the scoresheet but apparently played a pretty decent game.

Looking on twitter, not that it is the best reflection at the best of times, a lot of mixed reviews. But most seemed to be along the lines of played well but isn't ready this year and needs more seasoning. Won't be judged on one game but his size was always an issue for this year.

You all aren't hoping the Jets cut him? I am for all 18 yr olds being cut unless they are of the exceptional Crosby/MacKinnon type. Hockey is a sport where 18 yr olds rarely belong simply because they are too young physically and mentally IMO.
