At the time, I didn't know much about Pascal Vincent. All I knew was there were people calling for his head on a daily basis and that head was bald. It was somewhat understandable at the time because he had some pretty powerful teams and wasn't able to make the deep run everyone wanted but post-Vincent, it seems like CB realized the grass wasn't greener on the other side.
The first two years post-Vincent weren't too bad but those teams also had Vincent's finger prints all over them. In his final draft with CB he picked up star goalie Olivier Roy and hulking stay-at-home d-man Mathieu Brodeur.
In the third year under Mario, when the team was becoming his own, it became an utter train wreck. That classic bid for the Memorial Cup, the roster simply stunk, and their cupboard was empty. Remember Alex Veronneau as the goalie of the future?
Then we get to the hilarious Choules/Rioux era. People thought Vincent was bad... and then Mario? Little did we know! A GM that worked from Quebec and a coach that couldn't keep players on his team, they took over a train wreck and somehow made it worse. I'm pretty sure 1 name can be used to describe this era, Adam Veliky.
Now there's M-A Dumont. He's made some very bold and intelligent moves since taking over the club. From drafting a player #1 overall knowing that he wouldn't report just to get the compensation picks, convincing Cam Darcy to try his hand in the Q while also drafting 2 Russian childhood friends, and then recently passing on a local kid #5 overall. He stacked the cupboard with QMJHL players and manages his assets brilliantly.
I didn't think I'd ever see a day where CB would potentially have 3 1st round picks in the upcoming Q draft, 2 Russians on the roster (1 of which is a top prospect for 2015), and still be considered one of the contending teams in the league.
This is the first time I've seen a buzz in CB over the hockey team since Vincent had his finger prints on the roster. So we're now seeing the good again, in Mario we saw the bad, and in Choules/Rioux we saw the horribly ugly.
It leaves me wondering how people reflect on the Vincent-era.
