Happily surprised with last night's game. Usually the home team gets to ice a more experienced squad during exhibition but Charlottetown was older and much much bigger. Thought we handled ourselves very well.
Players that stood out.
Noah Corson was awesome. Very fun player to watch. He's a pest to play against, reminds me a lot of Marchand. The draft day trade to acquire him had a lot of people scratching their heads but he's truly a great find. Can't believe he wasn't ranked. Can't wait to watch him develop into a first liner.
Zachery Malatesta was our best defenseman last night. Jack of all trades. Has to make some adjustments with his defensive game but that will come with time. Also skating needs to improve.Moved the puck well , laid the body and quarterbacked the powerplay. What a shot! He's going to put of some points. Keeps it nice and low and hits the net 9/10 times. He's going to be fun to follow. He'll make a solid top-4 guy this season. Not bad for a late round pick.
Mathieu Olivier was solid as always. He'll be even more important this year with a year under his belt and now that Halabi and Haas have moved on. He's very physical and sound defensively.
Eric Leger's night said it all. A hattrick. Lilkes to shoot the puck and for a good reason. Has a quick release and a set of wheels. Knows where to be at the right place and time. Hopefully he'll stick , I think he can develop into a 25 goal major junior player.
Alexandre Jacobplayed with a lot of heart. Great skater and hard worker. Didn't shy away from the physical stuff and won battles along the boards. It's still early but I think he has a spot.
Cameron Askewwasn't overwhelming to be honest. Maybe I'm expecting too much or maybe nerves for a 17 year old playing in his first game with a new team. He seemed to be a step behind the first half of the game. Didn't play with much urgency and wasn't at all physical. He did pick things up as the game went on though which is why I think it's rust or nerves. Makes room for his linemates and picked up a couple of helpers. Liked when he stood up for his teammate when things got tough. I'm sure he'll keep improving and playing with great linemates will definitely help him.
Lane Cormier looked good from the llimited time. Reminds me on Mathieu Olivier last season. I think he'll have a similar year. Hard worker , physical and isn't afraid to drop the mitts. Energy guy that we could surely use.
Jonathan Cloutier was a pleasant surprise. Physical , really threw the body. Isn't big but gives it his all which makes up for it. Didn't make many mistakes.

My observations from tonight's game. I really liked Lane Cormier in the limited viewing I had of him. He seemed strong on the puck and was very physical. I think he brings something the cats don't really have on the roster now. Corson was a really nice surprise as well, I can't believe that he was not ranked by the Q scouting bureau, great find by Shannon and co. He was a real shit disturber, physical, had good puck skills, vision and made some really nice passes. I think he should have had the assist on the first goal because I thought he was the one who made the pass to Curtis. The only down side was that the bigger D like Henley really started to push him around a bit in the third period. I really liked what I saw but I think he could use another year in Midget just to get a bit bigger although I have heard that they may have signed him. I was kind of down on the Askew trade when the cats made it but wow, he has some hands. From what I saw tonight he kind of reminded me of Bruce Graham a bit; big, extremely talented, seems to operate at his own speed (not necessarily a bad thing, can calm the pace down) and not really physical at all for his size. He didn't seem to hit anyone tonight but he did stand up for his teammates once or twice although I don't think he should have had to do it, I thought someone else would have stepped in. Overall, I was extremely impressed with him. I think he should probably work on his face offs though, from what I remember he didn't seem to win that many against this lower level of talent. Malatesta: I thought he looked shaky at the start of the game but he really started to come into his own a bit later. You can tell the kid has a lot of skill. He's not the biggest or the most defensively sound but he looked good on the PP and made some nice hits. He was definitely the best d man for the cats. I actually liked what cloutier did in the first period. He's not big but he seemed to want it. It must be hard for most of the defencemen when they barely saw the ice in the second period with all the poweplays and how they went with 4 forwards for a bunch of it. Some others I thought flashed: Dominie had some good moments, Same with Izzo. I found both of these guys had their moments. Olivier looked strong on the puck, Jacob was good too and obviously Leger scored three goals. The big question mark with askew is consistency and effort level. that challenge will be getting it out of him for 70 games, especially if he is playing top 6. Obviously any player will have off nights, but if you are a key player for your team, you can't afford to take 30-35 games a year off and lose most of your battles on those nights. I think Graham is a good comparison, he will be a challenge for Rumble...

Definitely has offensive upside. The main issue I see is that it's adding another smurf to a slew of smurfs. He looks the same size as Tkachev last year, around 140lbs and about 5'7" or 5'8". With his style he'll be lucky not to have a concussion by opening night, he got smoked 3-4 times and shoulders were at head level. The way he makes himself a target he'll either need to grow 3-4 inches or protect himself better. I thought Malatesta's skating was good. He's definitely smooth with the puck, heard a couple of Welton comparisons, which is good.

I think when he's playing against major junior calibre teams his skating will show more. It's not terrible but certainly an area that's a little behind the rest of his game. Welton is a fair compairison.

If Dorsey is signed, and I hope Cloutier makes the team, then we have our 7 Defencemen. We have a bunch of highly skilled but small forwards. To compensate for that we need toughness ansd size. From last year's team, Barbashev,Tkachev,Lalonde, Garland, S.Johnson, Will Smiith, & Olivier are shoo-ins. Additions should be Askew, Corson, Jacob, Leger, Cormier & I Guess Liam Murphy, making 13. I,m hoping we pick toughness and size for the last one or two spots, unless one of the rookies or last year,s players not on my list above show so much that they just can't be dropped.

Malatesta came as advertised I would say. Offensive defenceman who isn't afraid to take chances. I could see him being a bit of an adventure defensively at times, but realistically he is exactly what's needed on the blueline for the Cats. They don't have any other high end offensive dmen currently in the fold.
Cameron Askew looked to be a cut above everyone else on the ice. Which was really to be expected in this type of game, but I certainly really liked what I saw from him last night. Great hands and great vision.
Big fan of Noah Corson! There was always something happening whenever he was on the ice. I've also heard that he already signed with the team, but I certainly wouldn't mind him playing a year of Midget AAA hockey. It's not like there's a whole lot of openings up front.
Olivier and Jacob both had some moments, but neither really stood out as much as I thought they might have. Will Bower was extremely disappointing and really didn't show much at all.
As odd as this might be to say I wasn't really overly impressed with Leger despite the hat trick. He was certainly at the right place at the right time for those goals which is a good thing, but he didn't really show a whole lot otherwise.
Don't really have much to say on the goaltending as neither was really tested much at all. Dupre did make a couple solid stops in the 1st period. He's not the quickest guy ever, but I really liked his positioning.

Olivier (2g and 2a) and Murphy (1g and 2a) seemed to have good games today. Seeger and Corson also scored.

Wonder when cuts will be announced, I expect 13-14 players cvut before Tuesday
Most cuts will probably be pretty obvious...a lot of CEGEP guys and a few FA's.
