One thing MacKinnon did that might hurt him this year is adding 12-13lbs...seems like too much in one off season, especially for a guy that doesn't have a huge frame(5'11") to begin with. His game is all about speed and quickness, not strength and physicality. I'm always weary of a hockey player adding more than 4-5 lbs in one off season... Still quick enough to beat an Olympic speedskater- he will be fine once Roy wakes up and puts him on the 2nd line.

I don't see that extra weight being a negative at all, he'll be a lot harder to contain. It's early in the season, he'll be fine once they get the lines set.

A couple of apples for Nate last night and he was named 3rd star. He had 7 shots on goal. The next most on the Avs was 3 so he seemed to be making stuff happen.

I agree with people that he's restricted right now playing with Tanguay and Briere. He plays a speed game, and those two really can't keep up. I was ready to say I thought he was getting a lot better at face offs... then I checked the stats and saw he was only 30%. Selective memory I guess.

Tanguay/MacKinnon/Briere...that makes me think back to when the Mooseheads made the first overall pick in their first year and chose Drapeau instead of Briere amidst speculation that Briere was reluctant to come to an English city. The Avs could be icing a line of 3 of the best Mooseheads ever, in retrospect.

No goals on the season yet.... looking like a Jonathan Huberdeau type sophomore slump unless he picks it up soon
His last 33 regular season NHL games..... 2 goals

The whole COL team have struggled so far for the most part. He needs to simplify his game right now. I can't see it lasting much longer given his speed and skill. But he always was a streaky player - some games, every time he drove the net something happened and others you hardly realized he was playing.

Saw the game in Montreal on October 18th and he was with O'Reilly and Landeskog. Landeskog was a rush killer that night making bad decisions all night. Nate looked okay but the only one I was really impressed with was Duchesne who had 10 SOG that night. The Avs as much of a whole look brutal this year , looks like they expect things to be easier.

Even Wayne Gretzky might have been challenged producing on those teams lol. The Panthers are just awful. It has sucked down Huberdeau it seems, and Barkov is looking crappy now too. Even when someone there plays a good game they typically don't get any stats to show it because the supporting cast blows goats. They desperately need to win the Eichel/McDavid sweepstakes, and even then they'll still have a ways to go.

Shoot first kind of player, while a bit shocking he's off to a slow start, not that shocking either.

He did most of his damage last year as #3 Center or 2nd line RW, so he had less defensive responsibility on the ice and teams did not gameplan for him as much behind Duchesne Stastny and co. This year he started out top 6 and and at center.
Plus he apparently added a pile of weight this off season, not a good idea for a sport built on speed, quickness and agility...

I don't think the weight is a big deal. He barely turned 18 when his NHL camp started last year and still has growing to do. Add in a year of NHL schedule plus an offseason and that weight can add up fast. From all accounts, he was more powerful, strong and faster when the season started. I think it is a bit of your first point though, in that he was sort of a secondary/third guy as far as being depended on to provide offense. This year he is plugged into the key roles against top defenders right away and some adjustment will be needed.

Last year fans on this board early on were upset he was in a third line role.... by the second half and playoffs he was not
This year they are upset the Avs made room for him to play center and be a top 6 fixture....
how about calling a spade a spade.... he is struggling

All I have seen is recognition that he is struggling so far. And I don't remember anyone expecting him to have a top role to start last year, let alone being upset about it. Perhaps if someone brought up a lack of scoring, it might have been pointed out that playing a 3rd line role with checkers won't maximize his potential etc, but he was certainly behind the veterans in the depth chart until he got some experience in the league.
