Last year fans on this board early on were upset he was in a third line role.... by the second half and playoffs he was not This year they are upset the Avs made room for him to play center and be a top 6 fixture.... how about calling a spade a spade.... he is struggling Who is upset about him being 2nd line C on this board? Yes he is struggling. I'm upset because he isn't doing anything for me in my fantasy pool... I wish he'd lose it one game and get some PIM so I could get the points for it that way.

He did most of his damage last year as #3 Center or 2nd line RW, so he had less defensive responsibility on the ice and teams did not gameplan for him as much behind Duchesne Stastny and co. This year he started out top 6 and and at center. Plus he apparently added a pile of weight this off season, not a good idea for a sport built on speed, quickness and agility... I don't think the weight is a big deal. He barely turned 18 when his NHL camp started last year and still has growing to do. Add in a year of NHL schedule plus an offseason and that weight can add up fast. From all accounts, he was more powerful, strong and faster when the season started. I think it is a bit of your first point though, in that he was sort of a secondary/third guy as far as being depended on to provide offense. This year he is plugged into the key roles against top defenders right away and some adjustment will be needed. blogs.denverpost.com/avs/2014/09/09/nathan-mackinnon-puts-12-13-pounds-muscle/19252/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter12-13lbs is a lot for an elite athlete playing a speed/agility/quick sport. that's not normal growth, usually young players of average size add 3-5lbs per year. If he was 6'5" to 6'7" then a frame has more room to add but at 5'11" that's a ton of weight. he wasn't skinny to begin with...

We said the same thing about Frk when he packed on the weight. He wasn't nearly as explosive. Actually he didn't really recover from that so maybe he's a bad example. But he's almost identical to Crosby's dimensions now. He just has to adjust. Combination of the team playing bad, MAYBE the extra weight, softmore jitters and extra attention playing against better players IMO. He'll battle through it.

Boarding major for Nate tonight- followed Schenn into the boards and Schenn went in hard. I only saw one replay and it looked like Nate barely touched him- almost looked like he gave him a tug rather than a push but hard to tell from the one view. Doubt he will be suspended where he was given 5 and a game already.

He pushed into the numbers which would be two for boarding. Schenn got hurt which makes 5 and a game appropriate according to the rules. I don't think he deserves anything else.

I mean it is how its reported, but he ended up with 18 minutes of icetime according to the NHL? Basically a couple minutes off other top forwards...

Oh I don't know I just saw what Gman posted, and that Nate had 5 minutes in penalties. I actually forgot there were instances in the NHL where you could receive a 5 minute penalty but not a game misconduct. By the sounds of the game recap on TSN, he didn't get a game misconduct. I chuckled when I saw that MacKinnon went out with Brayden and Luke Schenn for supper the night before. Figures. www.tsn.ca/nhl/game/colorado-avalanche-philadelphia-flyers-20141108/recap

I just assumed a 5 minute boarding major would come with a game misconduct. Maybe he just got the 5?

I don't think the play was that bad to be honest. I try not to be biased.

He shoved Schenn with a crosscheck in the small of his back while he was going towards the boards. It doesn't take much of a push to knock someone off balance with a shot to the lower back and MacKinnon has played enough hockey to know it...I doubt he meant to hurt him but he did mean to shove him. Should have been a suspension.

Watched the replay 15 times to figure out why Schenn was so off balance. His left skate caught a rut in the ice - check the video at exactly 1:00 mark. MacKinnon touching his back with his stick was probably not the sole reason for the fall.
