I agree with you on this, Reesor. Getting the younger players, especially the young defencemen, more playing time to find out if they can play Major Junior Hockey long term and be a part of something good in the near future should be the main/only focus this season, or at least find out if they can be used as assets to acquire something decent you need down the road. Resop will play the majority of the time when/if Fucale is traded (unless they acquire a Callum Booth type from QUE for him; how likely that is who knows). I haven't looked at the standings much at all this year in terms of where the Mooseheads are. If you want an early draft pick but want the "youngsters" to develop, you would hope they play well, but the team loses much more often than not. I don't know how this year's draft ranks in terms of high end prospects, if there are any "game changers"; players you can build your team around. We'll find that out as the season goes along, and if the Moose continue to struggle record wise, we can start keeping closer track on these players. Russell has done a complete re-build once before and it worked out quite well. That's what they need now. Combine the developing players and the assets you get in return for the vets, this team won't be down for long. One thing u want to be careful of as you go about moving these pieces (especially the scorers Gadoury/Ehlers) in a rebuild is that you do not make things much worse for the D you are trying to develop. If every game is like losing by a goal or cant score to get back in a game it will be a terrible place to learn how to play that position. I go so far to say you do not move Hardie. There needs to be an anchor on that D to mentor the others. You actually get more value moving Matt Murphy though he is the best one of the lot. You move what brings good value in return. Vets as fillers can be had as throw ins during deals or picked up for late picks as they are moved out to make room. Some can be for free if you are lower in the standing if released by league rules.

Murphy would have more value as he's only 19 this year; an acquiring team would have him for an extra year as compared to Hardie. Would be interesting to see what kind of offers Russell would get for him, though I doubt Russell moves him.
You make a good point about not making the defence worse by trading the scorers, the more they play the more situations they find themselves in and more experience they get and hopefully they get learn from the situations and get better. Thye may get frustrated with the losses and lack of goal scoring, but you find out if they have the mental wherewithall to stay above it all and not fold their tent when things go wrong. See if they keep plugging away at it and not give up. They'll be better for it in the long run.

That mental fortitude more often than not comes from playing close games where their play may make a difference in the outcome. The goal is in 12 months that the player is better and the team improves. Its really hard to tell when they are totally outmatched. I believe with the load and rebuild nature of this league there are always players that never get to show what they can do because the team around them stunts their development. Their junior careers are but a footnote because of circumstance. I look at a young player like Nauss who as talented as he looked in camp (and he is really really young) has made his share of gawdy mistakes this season and thats to be expected. We saw flashes of his actual defensive play using his sped vs Sprong boxing him out and blocking his pass/shot last Friday night. Its not a bad group on D individually they all can grow but need to be on a somewhat competitive group.

I agree with what you're saying; one point I'd like to make is each individual player develops at their own pace. Some shine through the process quicker than some and become at least useful players (some become semi star-star players), while others take much longer or just can't get beyond a certain point in their development for whatever reason(s). As you said, the goal for a year from now is that the younger players have gotten better and the team has gotten better along with them. As fans we want the youngsters to develop to their full potential like "yesterday", but it does take time. You would like all of them to be learning on top contending teams, but at this point in time for the Moose, that just isn't where they are right now.
