I saw this on other boards and figured it'd be a fun little discussion to have on an off day.
Pick a player from past teams to play on today's team for the playoff run.
There's lots of possibilities. Wouldn't it be fun to have Jaskin as our second euro playing with Garland and Barbashev? What about Phil Dupuis? I think with Garland doing the play making, Dupuis wouldn't be as much of a need. Gabriel Bourque would be fun to see in a Cats uniform again. Great leader that could really boost this team heading into the playoffs.
Our D-Core could use some help, what about Yandle? As fun as Yandle would be to watch with Garland feeding him, I think there's bigger needs. I'd take Savard over him. Imagine a Savard/Sweeney pairing. That could really help out with our goals against.

I would have to take a defenceman from a previous team. I know we are really a one line team when it comes to forwards but the glaring need is the backend.
Like you said, there are a ton of options (I think the 2005-2006 had 4 dmen to play in the NHL a bit). I think I would have to go with Gormley though. He peaked when Moncton was bad but he averaged over a point a game his last season and a half for Moncton and was solid defensively. But I'm not sure you could argue with someone choosing one of the other quality Dmen Moncton had

One of my all-time favourites is Karssums ... and he was a playoff MVP. Others from years past that would be nice to have for a playoff run are guys like David Savard, Yandle ... and Alexei Tezikov. And of course Nicola Riopel.

Karsums was deadly in the playoffs. Savard, Dupuis, Yandle, Bourque and Riopel are also up there. Crawford in the 04 playoffs carried the team to the finals on his back and would be my choice. If Sportsnet broadcasts playoff games then Tim Spencer would be up there

I think it would be fun to watch Steve Bernier ride shotgun for Garland.
Tezikov would be certainly fun to watch on this team.

I don't know how comfortable I'd feel having Garland and Benoit out there at the same time... who was the team's best dman at breaking up odd man rushes? Seriously though, since it's pertaining to this year's roster I'll say Savard. He helps remedy what would have to be the biggest need on this team and also contributes on an already impressive offense. There's that built-in leadership component as well... I wonder who he would tell to "Wake the f*** up"?

Kory Baker Also, Ryan Salvis did a very good job of containing Crosby in '04... but the Baker/Ribeiro matchup came with a whole different level of entertainment.

Yup Baker, Sill and Samson! If we are talking shutdown guys, I think Christian Gaudet deserves to be in the conversation as well.

For the record, I'd take Crawford over Riopel if we were going to replace Dubeau. Bernier was one of my favorite Wildcats ever but again, not sure he would be as needed as a Savard or Gormley. Makes you wonder though, what if Barbashev and Garland had stead forward on their line instead of a revolving door.

Makes you wonder though, what if Barbashev and Garland had stead forward on their line instead of a revolving door. First you need to figure out what the biggest need is on this year's team ... On defense, if you want a guy that can play both ends of the rink, Savard or Gormley are the guys IMO (Tezikov pre-dates my time following the team - not sure where he would fit in) ... if you want a pure offensive guy, then Yandle would be #1 choice ... but I don't think an offensive d-man would be our most pressing need. Up front, hard to argue with Jaskin if we are looking for a scoring winger to play with Garland and Barbashev ... If you are looking for more of a two way winger who can bring some grit, Bourque and Karsums enter the equation. The other thing that would be nice would be secondary scoring - so maybe a Dupuis or Deschamps to build a second scoring line around ... problem with that is who do you play with them ... When you look at it, it is amazing that we are having as much success as we are with this team ... on paper, we don't look that good. We basically have two forwards scoring, with a bunch of grinders supporting them ... Our defense corps is solid, but nowhere near as star studded as the 05/06 or 09/10 editions ... Dubeau is an above average starter, but again, not as great as some of our past guys who could win games/series seemingly on their own.

If I'm looking to win a championship ... I want Riopel ... he did it ... Crawford didn't (at the Jr level). I'd take Riopel over Dubeau also ... and leave Dubeau on the bench.
