Ugh... When was the last time a Memorial Cup Host went out in the first round? Good question - its often 2nd round - Shawinigan in 2012 - I think Saskatoon was a 1st round victim 2013 - which was weird the team was mostly 19 y.o. players. Quebec is prime for losing early too. Getting CB is like a bad door prize for a team that has looked less than Memorial Cup worthy all season. Their second half may even have a worse record than the Eagles if you do the splits on season. You're right. And Shawinigan ended up winning the Memorial Cup in overtime on home ice if I recall correctly? It was the year we traded Morgan Ellis to Shawinigan.

Fun fact: Belanger has eliminated the Remparts the last 2 years in the playoffs. Rouyn did a pretty good shutdown job at home. BĂ©langer's stats weren't that impressive (3,26 and 0,871). Quebec couldn't get to him. I expect a high scoring series. The key for CB will be to win one in Quebec. Remparts have been stellar at home in Quebec but real bad on the road. The 2-3-2 could help CB.

The Shawinigan thing was the one time it worked. I remember watching a series done in the summer training camp as the Shawinigan GM and coaches built that team. They evaluated players not to win the Q but to have the best mix of team for May. The Cats knocked off powerhouse Saint John in the semi-final and then killed the Knights on Zykov OT goal...at home...one of more exciting endings in Cup history. You guys have the Duncan MacIntyre thing going vs Quebec too. I recall in 2012 when Halifax upset Quebec in the 0-3 comeback we had Brendan Duke who was a mid-season trade...so there are many little subplots that make the Cape Breton-Quebec series intriguing. The goalie is the other (hasnt he ousted them before?)

Quebec gave it all in this series coming back from 2-0 and 3-2. They won the first game against Shawinigan in the semi final but had nothing left in the tank after. The CB/QC series basically lasted more than 8 games!

Let's not over-romanticize the past too much.
The first two games of that 2009 Quebec series were great. Game 1, the 4OT game, was of course an instant classic.
But I found the final five games of the series to be quite ordinary. I like to think that I'm not just saying this because we lost.
The four games Quebec won, they won pretty easily. CB came out flat in Games 3 and 4 at home. And got shut out 3-0 in both Games 6 and 7 in Quebec.
I think CB scored only 6 goals or so over the final five games.
Once Robert Slaney got hurt near the end of Game 2, the series turned completely.
In fact, I find that because most games in that series were so ordinary.... that the 4OT win gets kind of under-noticed in team history. For a team with precious little playoff success in its history, you'd think a win in quadruple OT would get talked about more than it does. I bet only the hardcore fans even remember it happened.
One thing about that series that I do consider to be 'for the ages': the goaltending performance by Charlie Lavigne in Quebec's net.
After letting in a shot from centre ice in Game 2, he was virtually unbeatable in Games 3 through 7.
And of course, he made 68 saves in a losing effort in the first game.
We have a history of seeing opposing goalies turn into brick walls against us in the postseason. Jeff Deslauriers. Guillaume Lavallee. Jeremy Duchesne. Mark Yetman.
But Lavigne in 2009 was arguably the best goaltending performance we have fallen victim to in a playoff series.
