Do Cape Breton draft at 16th even though they have two Imports? They can because Svechnikov was drafted in the first round. Edit: I don't think they draft, just due to the fact that Svechnikov won't make the Wings this season and he'll be sent back.
Without looking at the other teams and their Import situations, I can hold out hope that 3-4 of the top 18 teams pass, and we draft somewhere around 15th/16th. You can always find a diamond in the rough Import, but obviously, the higher the pick, the better.

When you can't move the new Euro there's little point in picking when you already have 2 high end players. Lazarev staying home after not getting drafted would be the only way.

There's no question that we hit home runs with guys that we got to pick really high. Took a quick look and we have made great late picks too. Just to put some fans at ease here that are worried that we won't land a top end talent this is a list of former players we have picked.
Elias Abrahamsson, pick 41st Ladislov Nagy, pick 28th Alexei Volkov, pick 15th ( a bit high but around our pick this year) Andrei Shefer, pick 20th Sergei Klyazmin, pick 13 ( high again but in the ball park of this year pick as well) Milan Jurcina, picked 35th Jan Steber, pick 16th ( this is the best example in my mind, I would be happy with the same style or skill set as him) Jiri Suchy, pick 47th Konrad Abeltshauser, pick 28th
In saying all this I'm confident we will get a good player tomorrow.

I hope like hell they do better than a Jan Steber with the first round pick, that would be a fail. A player like that would be ok for a 2nd round. Upgraded the following year draft.

The rules have changed since you picked those guys. They have tried to level the playing field over the last few years by capping the money you can pay out. Years before you guys could pay big bucks without blinking to get high-end guys to show up. I still think that high end guys can be picked at any spot in the draft. Most players/agents are willing to block other interested teams to play for a quality franchise. It is better for a player and an agent to get their player to a high end franchise with a strong coaching group ... instead of a place like Bathurst who change coaches annually. Nobody wants their player/son stuck in a place with instability. But ... with 60 teams potentially picking, there are several good options for a player to get drafted by ... so even a highend franchise like Halifax has to fight for their guy. Picking early obviously makes that situation easier. I think you'll see more 19 YOs taken later in the draft ... while most teams will be targetting 17 and 18 YOs ... more bang for the buck.

Most of those guys listed were not high end guys though. They were picked by a staff that was not as involved in the process. One was taken just on a agents say and was a BIG fail on and off the ice. Russell actually goes to Europe. Meier was taken with the 12th pick and no passes prior. So the 19th pick should allow them to get someone they saw. 2nd round older guy likely if used. The money issue helps all, money is used in scouting and process now rather than direct payouts. That also applies to teams picking before the Moose. OHL, WHL teams are less a threat to the Moose in this respect too, as they were the ones taking more high end players and trading up. Moose are now also using assets to draft players, not trading up in Euro draft, so it probably balances out with the passes earlier in the draft. Like you said reputation helps, last 2 imports should not hurt considering results.

If they can get a commitement from a 19yo at pick #79 I say use it. I don't think Meier will be in the NHL this year, but there's no harm in picking a 19yo, so that we can draft again next year when our pick is higher.
I'm intrigued to see how Bathurst drafts. I really hope for their sake that they pick the best player available. The more small teams that can get high end Imports to report, the better for the strength of the league.

Pass watch: 6 teams have passed ahead of pick #79. So our 2nd pick is now down to #73. No one has officially passed ahead of pick #19 (Kitchener at #30 is the only one that has officially passed their first pick). By "officially", I mean that it's already passed on the website. www.chl.ca/draft/chl
