Those would be my guess. It's surprising that they don't mention Petruzzelli as a top prospect ahead of Grant and Waite but it's likely what Arnold said about not wanting all the top prospects to be NCAA guys. Shannon also said one or two of the top prospects may join the team later in the year. The obvious guess is Cyr and Lavoie but I think that it is somewhat of a good sign in that Moncton is likely trading away some of their older players and not loading up for what is likely Garland's last year. I wouldn't mind leaving Lavoie and Cyr in Dieppe if they are getting playing time because it will likely still be hard to find time for the younger players on the roster even if they do move out a few guys. The way I read it, and I could very well be wrong, is that he was hinting at the remote possibility of someone like O'Leary or McInnis joining the team at mid-season. He was talking about players that would instantly change the look of the team if they arrived so I assume that's who he was talking about. Sure would be nice if a defenceman ended up here because the lack of depth on the blueline is pretty glaring. Sweeney coming back gives the team a true top pairing guy, but they could still desperately use another top four dman. If a McInnis or Krys showed up that would really change things on the back end. Sadly we all know that's a pipe dream at best. Shannon's words we're .. "there is an outside chance" ... that one or two could join us at some point this year. I read that as spin. He is trying to add something positive to a fairly negative report. "Outside chance" says "well ... he didn't say no ... but the others did".

The part that is disappointing is the early picks that did not show. Guys like Krys, it's no big loss, you spend a later pick on a potential superstar. It's guys drafted in rounds 3-5 that are good players, but a pretty good player that would 100% be here was passed up. If not a guy that can play for the WC it would be a tradeable asset. It's like giving up Cyr and Lavoie for 2 guys that are going NCAA.

But it is when you do that too often and the misses pile up that it begins to matter. It is starting to matter. I think the Wildcats (Irving included) are getting a bit of an ego after changing the mind of a few NCAA-bound players over the years. Now they think they can grab an O'Leary and he'll bow down to them and show up. I'd rather get some sort of commitment from the player ... at least some interest ... before shooting with a higher pick. However, on the other hand, they had three 3rd round picks, went for O'leary with the first one, then took Crossman and Lavoie. I'd rather use that extra pick in a 3-5 round on a guy like O'Leary. But, it would be easier to swallow if you already picked in Rd 1 and 2. We had dealt away our 1st and moved around in the 2nd before we finally picked Cyr. I'd rather a pick like O'Leary be gambled with after you have picked 3 or 4 solid guys you know will report. It doesn't always go as planned ... I understand that ... and I don't mind a few gambles. But too many misses can get a GM fired. I think Shannon is probably under pressure to change the mind of a few of the guys that have said "no thanks" ... or else.

It hurts more when you have no 1st rounder, or even a 2nd most drafts. I think the last productive 1st rounder in a WC jersey was Gormley in 2008. I don't recall anybody winning a QMJHL title without a team that was mostly homegrown. Free Agents and Euros are a nice complement, but powerhouse teams are built mostly in the top 5 rounds on the QMJHL draft. That's a tested and true formula.

A lot of those high risk picks are Mr. Irving's. Same as bringing in a 19 year old d man this season.

According to the article today...6/10 are almost locks to play NCAA 1-Krys 2-O'Leary 3-MacLeod 4-Cyr 5-McInnis 6-Dawe 7-Lavoie 8-McKenna 9-Waite 10-Grant Strange they never brought up Petruzzelli who was higher rated than Grant or Waite for the draft? I assume Grant Lavoie Cyr and McKenna are the ones reporting for sure? Interesting that 5 of the top 6 never showed up...
