So far this year, the Cats have had a 3 line attack with the 4th line occasionally chipping in, 3rd overall in scoring but the goals against has been a definite issue. Fortin has not lived up to the #1 billing. 3.63 GAA and .880 save% definitely show that. Dupre has done an adequate job but asking him to play 80% of the games is probably not the answer...I wonder if the WC would be interested in looking at a 19 or 20 year old goalie as FA now that the OHL and WHL have started full force?
Getting a 19 year old would be ideal and allow them to add an OA d-man...

Is Andrey Makarov available?

Is Andrey Makarov available? That brings up another point, I feel like the Wildcats are wasting 2 impact slots. On top of Fortin not being an adequate 20 year old,Glaessl in my limited viewing of him, hasn't really impressed me for an import. He's 18 and they are probably planning on bringing him back back. We wasted an import slot last year but if you look at the really good teams, their 20's and imports are top notch. If the Cats plan on going for it this year which I hear they are, they need to maximize those slots.

If you look at the teams that make the finals every year, their 5 impact slots are rarely wasted.

I've been very disappointed in Fortin's play this year, and I don't feel he deserves one of the 20yo spots. However, I don't expect to see any change in the goaltending - if the coaches were not already sold on him, I think they would have held onto Johnston longer.

I don't find Glassl has been a waste - I think he does a good job in his role; I can't recall any glaring mistakes in the games I've seen. Is he taking the place of another 18yo D the Cats have in their system? I don't think so - I have more issue with Guay taking icetime away from Tesink than I do with Glassl.

If they are serious about trying to win, realistically they would need two top 3 calibre d-men. Holwell is serviceable, but not a guy you want as your #2 or 3 guy. A guy like Murphy would help plus another solid top 4 guy. Malatesta, like Holwell can be a decent #4, but not sure you can have both in your top 4 and win. Neither is very good defensively. Glassl would be ok as a #5-6, same for Klebanskyj, neither should be in the top 4. A realistic contender would need a #1 goalie, #2 and 3/4 defensemen added at midseason. Up front, you can probably live with the group, though more size could also be on the shopping list.

What assets do we have to offer to make some deals for a #1 goalie, #2 and 3/4 defensemen at midseason and add size also.

I was of that opinion also a few weeks ago but have seen clear improvement in Glassl as he has become more comfortable over the last few weeks. He is showing more composure with the puck now than he was in the early going. However, he is still a #5 Dman and not an impact player. But not every 1st year import is an impact player. I'm not sure I see "impact" from him beyond being a reliable dman.

We could bring Rioux back and let Dupre be #1 but share the load. That would give you the same result as a 19 YO castoff from the OHL. A 20 YO castoff from the OHL might be better.

Maybe if the Isles continue to struggle Sonier may decide to sell. Mcdonald could be your guy.

Sound familiar ? I'm not saying Rioux is the answer ... just saying that we don't have to look far for the calibre of goaltender you are talking about.

If you look at some of the 19 year old FA goalies that have come to the Q, most are better than Rioux. Some of them were let go because teams wanted to give the #1 job to a younger guy and that guy did not want to be a back up. De Serres comes to mind. There are a few others... Ultimately, the Cats will probably have to decide what they are doing and possibly add a goalie at midseason. I expect tinkering when they need 3 pretty big pieces...
