Del Paggio never lifted his elbow. If there was head contacts it was because of the size difference in players or ducking from the victim. Del Paggio definitely did not jump up. Disagree on the lifting of an elbow and head contact - in the last video Irving Homie posted, Del Paggio's elbow does lift and separate from his body. Is it from "normal follow through" on a hit? To me it appears no, we've seen hits where players keep their elbows tucked into their body. So it is possible.

Whoever the cats play first round Garland is gonna get hammered. Teams take runs at him every game and every shift ... that is nothing new. He gets hit in the head every game and it is rarely called ... elbowed, punched, highsticked, hacked. If I was on the other team I would do it too ... especially since the Refs call about 10% of it.

Guess the buck stops at the League suspension desk on those hits, but from where I sit I thought the goal tender hit was the more serious but whatever. With reference to Garland hit all I can say from previous observations Garland is always yapping at officials. If he trips up over the blue line on his way back to get in the defensive play(which he does poorly) his first look is at the Ref. If there is any such thing as "benefit of the doubt" Garland will probably not get it from Officials A couple of times earlier he went down easy. The most comical was when he skated into the back of Zboril, went down and yapped at the ref for not calling a penalty. Del Paggio never lifted his elbow. If there was head contacts it was because of the size difference in players or ducking from the victim. Del Paggio definitely did not jump up. Del Paggio and Garland are the same height so that doesnt make any sense. Even if they werent, would Jack Van Boekel be able to hit anyone he wants in the head because hes one of the tallest players in the league? I remember when Artukyin (sp?) was in the league he hit people in the head all the time because of his size, most said he was one of the dirtiest players in the league and i tended to agree.

How does nobody step in on either of those hits to address the hitter?
We see good clean hockey hits where guys are almost forced to defend themselves afterwards... but in both these cases it appears nobody does a thing

There's a reason why it's only called 10% of the time Steve.

I think he brings some of it on himself with his antics. Like Ehlers last year, I think after awhile crying wolf gets you nothing. If he didn't embellish and walked away from scrums I think he would gain a lot more PP's for the team. Right now he takes a lot of abuse and a lot goes uncalled because of his rep.

Thats how you get sued for $8 million. The rules are there to be called ... and especially rules regarding head contact. If a Ref decides to not call something because the guy is mouthy then they need to be let go ... that does not protect the players.

It was sort of an awkward moment in the game, the Cats were down 1 goal in the most important game of the season.

I don't think a ref intentionally won't call a bad hit, but your history as a player impacts the ref's judgment, unfortunately.

I don't think either was a heinous act or had any intent to injure. Both just had unfortunate results which likely means both will be suspended.

Smiths hit on the goalie was a deliberate intent to injure and should be suspended. The hit on Garland was a good clean hit,as I saw it...They showed the replays a few times and that is what I saw.
On the Garland hit, he tried to avoid the hit by spinning to avoid it and that's where he got hurt.I don't even think that was a penalty.Clean hit.

There's a reason why it's only called 10% of the time Steve. I know the reason and I don't dispute that the reason is fact (embellishment and yapping) ... but that doesn't give the Refs the right to allow checks/punches/sticks to the head of Conor Garland. The Refs must protect the players at all costs ... and their personal issues need to stay out of it ... they are not being impartial if they let their dislike of Conor Garland affect their judgment. I don't mind the non-violent trips and hooks and holds that might go uncalled from time to time ... but it is the violent stuff that must always be called. Even the jab to the face in a scrum should be called every time ... no exceptions ... it is a targeting of the head and that has to be taken out of the game for the safety of the players. Think about it ... if I flip the puck over the glass in my own end it is an automatic 2:00 ... but if I punch an opponent in the head I can get away with it, even though the Ref saw me do it. To me ... 100% of any type of head contact must be called ... especially punches after the whistle.

Part of the issue is Garland will sometimes be the aggressor in some of these scrums...so it goes both ways. Like I said earlier, he probably gets a lot more calls without the antics and staying away from scrums/retaliation.

THERE! I think this is the most accurate description of what happened! Smith's was totally intentional. I was angry at the hit that caused Audet's injury in CB, but that one was 3 times worse. Running goaltenders like that is a pure attempt at crippling a team of one of its most precious asset. Last night Pickard was runned in and it could have resulted in an injury. Turcotte now is out for the remainder of the regular season....pretty bad. Smith should be out 10-20 games.
