Cody Donaghey just had his NHL rights traded to Ottawa from Toronto in the huge 9 player Dion Phaneuf deal!

You missed a perfect opportunity to be an ass. Should have made the thread title "Cody Donaghey Traded"

Must be a short list of players who have been traded in multiple leagues in the same season.

Looks like he'll be back next season... Too early to tell. From what I've heard, he would have been back in the Q instead of playing with the Marlies but it's up to Ottawa now. It would be huge for the Cats if he came back next year, could probably trade him to recoup some of our thrown away assets this season or keep him to play with Holwell on the top pairing.

Ya the 11 points and -9 would surely be missed next season...

Ottawa doesn't have a lot of talent on defense in the AHL, so I'd be surprised if he was back in the Q.

Great trade for the rest of his career. New team, new start

It's honestly pretty ridiculous. There is just far too many variables for plus minus to have any meaning to it. Baseball is a sport that has figured out meaningful stats to truely understand the value of the player beyond the basic stats but I do not know that hockey ever will. You can judge offensive players on their production but when it comes to analyzing defensive play there is no other way to do it than simply watching the player play.

It's 2016 and we're still discussing plus/minus as some sort of valid stat??? +- has some value in the proper context. If shot attempts can be used to evaluate a player, then goals for and against when you're on the ice should also be as valuable if not more.

If shot attempts can be used to evaluate a player, then goals for and against when you're on the ice should also be as valuable if not more. Shot attempts are stupid also. Anybody with the puck on their stick can fire a puck from the half boards towards the net and get a shot attempt. Dangerous shot attempts aren't bad. Shows if a player can get into good position. Shooting percentage is decent also when used with dangerous shot attempts. Can paint a picture on finish. Cody Donaghey can do everything right in a game and be a -4 because a goalie let in a weak goal or two or his defensive partner missed an assignment, or a puck goes in off a skate. It's garbage. Not bad when used as a team stat, but for individual players its nuts, there is no proper context.

If shot attempts can be used to evaluate a player, then goals for and against when you're on the ice should also be as valuable if not more. I'm pretty sure all stats have variables. In baseball it's pretty simple, if you're at the plate you either hit the ball or you don't. You either catch a ball or you don't. In hockey you could either jump on the ice and catch a plus or a minus. In your own end you reduce variables by being strong defensively. Don't let guys get around you, take shooting chances away all those things that all defenseman should be thinking about in his "own" end. It is a team game and the 7-9 record since his arrival and the other acquisitions should obviously be shared by everyone on the team
