“I’m not satisfied doing exit meetings (Wednesday) and (Thursday). That wasn’t our plan. That’s not what we wanted,” he said Wednesday night. “We’re not satisfied with the result, we’re going to work on the process. Was the process a complete disappointment? I don’t think so.”
“There’s a lot more to be achieved here. I really enjoy my time here and it’s a great organization. There’s definitely assessments that need to be done, too,” Dumont said when asked about his future. “We need to evaluate as a franchise why in 20 years we’ve gone to the semifinals twice. There’s work to be done on that aspect. Why is it a fact that it’s been difficult in playoffs? There’s definitely the factor of stability.”
“I think everybody’s disappointed for not being able to win the second round,” said Dumont. “I think we had the team to win the second round and it went to Game 7. Any series that goes to Game 7 can go either way. We can’t be disappointed in the way our players competed in the playoffs. We had some players that were all in, wanted to win and wanted to perform and believed in it until the end.”
I'll comment on the bolded parts:
#1 The process was not a complete disappointment...it was a complete and utter failure. What should have been a top 2 or 3 team and at worst a contender for best team in the division finished 3rd in the division and 7th overall. To say it wasn't disappointment is merely a man trying to sell future job prospects to ownership who may actually, but hopefully won't, buy that garbage. None of this takes into account last years disaster either and the veterans who regressed or asked out over both seasons is incredible.
#2 The factor of stability. How many goaltenders did we go through exactly during this rebuilding process? How completely awful structurally did this team look for all but minus the final 10 games or so of the season when our final middle of the pack standing was pretty much cemented and any hope at winning the division was gone? Outside of Joly and his scoring did anyone ever feel 100% confident in our overagers? We were still trying to pick up offensive forwards at the deadline when we already had players like Dubois, the Russians, Bishop, Joly, Martineau...yet went into the stretch run with practically no depth on the blueline and a waiver pickup as our backup goalie. Define stability please Mr. Dumont.
#3 Any series that goes to game 7 can go either way. Yes, absolutely. What about series that go 6 games? Like the Chicoutimi series for example...under Dumont all his success hinges on people believing that in 2 straight years he just fell short because his teams made it to a 7th game even though it was Dumont's teams and under achieving that had them playing those teams in the first place. This isn't the NHL where there's a ton of parity...the most veteran team in the league should not have as much difficulty with a team like Chicoutimi that we did. The fact that Saint John was essentially missing 3 top 6 forwards and still absolutely owned the final 4 periods of that series....for veteran teams those things are supposed to go our way but coaching didn't help our cause any...
#4 We had some players that were all in. Yes, some. Carozza wasn't. Leveille was all in for everything but working and playing a solid game, he was too worried talking trash. These are the kinds of players Dumont put this season in the hands of and they failed miserably. Having a team where only some players are all in is the exact reason why he should not be in charge of rebuilding this team. We need a GM who will give a coach a team full of all in players, not rely on some of them. Chase Marchand certainly seems all in for Rouyn though.
