wonder if it's possible to sway Doughty our way next season, move on from Gardiner who will be a UFA next year. I definitely think a winger will be signed if JVR walks, but the thing is, is that winger going to bring the same type of stuff to the table? That's the risk, especially a guy like Perron who had a career year but another change might see him move back to where he was years before. We know what we have in JVR. I think the Leafs will try on Carlson for sure, but for 8m I can't see it. the 6.5m range for 3-4 years would be really nice but then again seems unlikely and he probably goes to a team for 7x7 is my guess. If guys like Hamonic who are top 4 goes for 1st rounders +, a top 2 will be 3-4 top end assets and who out there has one to move? I think you'll see Doughty get extended in July, he seems happy there. My guess is the cost is around 75-80M over 8 years. I think you guys will miss JVR, he isn't flashy but he always finds a way to pot 30(36 this year), those guys don't grow on trees. Signing him at 8M AAV may be prohibitive, but it will still hurt. Perron might get you 25 next year, but usually his 2nd year somewhere he drop off and gets disinterested, that's why he's moved around so much. Neal could be an option, but he is long in the tooth and likely wants 5-6 years...

Any Feedback flying around yet from Babcock's Trip to Arizona to visit Matthews ? The majority of the Hockey World didn't look upon it very favorably . The majority of the hockey world also only tends to be like social media comments and only focus on the negative aspect of a story. If Matthews wasn't pissed at how his season ended then that would be a problem in itself. A guy like Babcock clashes with almost everyone he works with every day because he is a hockey coach and "on" 100% of the time to the point that it's exhausting. Think of a co-worker who is only work all the time...no social aspects, no "how was your weekend" just work work and more work constantly and that's basically how Mike Babcock is every day according to most people. So to me it's natural that the minute the core guys get home and relax he's going to want to go to them in their own element and talk things out like adults and re-focus their mind on the training and off-season ahead and what the expectations are for next year. For a Matthews that's even more important as a potential future captain and the fact that he likely just faced adversity for the first time in his adult life and clearly had a tough time handling it in a huge media market. You set him right, take some time yourself, eventually stop in for a cup of tea with Mrs. Marner and a beer with the Nylanders, etc, etc, etc and keep your young core focused on their overall goal. Babock is far from a perfect coach but as a guy he seems like a stand up person. Someone who will ride you hard and when things calm down explain the reason and hear you out. There's so much that goes into developing a winning culture and he's seen both good and bad and as a Leaf fan it's humorous to see the hockey world jump to the negative days after a 105pt season ends to a superior opponent in a game 7 loss. The same guy preached pain to the leagues biggest fan base 3 years ago. The turn around has been stunning and shocked even the biggest detractors due to doing many things right. I think we'd all like to see Matthews have more diversity within the lineup. Play with a Marner more, especially on the PP, and start to earn from minutes on the PK even. All the greats play in many situations and that guy wants to be great. But i'll be the fan a bit on the naive side saying why wouldn't you go right to him first and not let any negative feelings linger and help get his mind back on track in a private setting with the family he's so close to there to participate in a world far away from the hockey mecca they live in 10 months a year vs doing the opposite and expecting him to show up in September with no hard feelings? These guys stay in touch throughout the off-season. I don't think that should be news to anyone. I doubt Babcock is hearing about his weekend romps with models in Mexico like his teammates would as he's more of a father figure but there's a relationship there and like most it sometimes needs work to reset it and take it to another level. If Matthews takes his poor production, and a visit from the coach, as insults to his hockey greatness then we have a much larger issue. But for a kid who has had it pretty easy even coming into Toronto #1 overall I like the idea of not letting him stew in it and clearing the air of anything lingering after the Boston series.

He's scored 154 goals in 413 games since arriving in Toronto. That works out to an average of 30+ per season.

I'm not continuing to discuss why a 2 time 30 goal scorer isn't always managing to score 30 goals. Mike Gartner always managed to score 30 goals. This stuff is exactly what bois was pointing out the other day. You can have the last word...I'll spare everyone the inevitable all day back and forth.

How am I ignoring your comment when I'm asking for clarification about it? I even bolded and underlined it! Here are JVR's seasons in Toronto. 18G in 48 games(30G pace) 30G in 80 games 27G in 82 games 14G in 40 games(29G pace) 29G in 82 games 36G in 81 games no matter how you slice it, he will be hard to replace if they don't get him signed. 30 goal scorers don't grow on trees. Toronto does have other weapons but it takes a bite out of the depth. As you said Kapanen and Jonsson can give more, but replacing a 30 goal guy with a 15 to 18 goal guy(in the short term) will be a set back.

Kyle Dubas is the new Maple Leafs GM.
I really hope this doesn't cost them Mark Hunter. The jury is still out on his drafting outside of round 1 but he's been the catalyst for a lot of the positive change so far and has a much longer track record then Dubas.
Interesting to see how things end up after this one.
Dubas could end up being our Theo Epstein ahead of the curve young aggressive GM or an absolute inexperienced disaster.

I think Dubas is going to be a great GM for the Leafs... I’d lean more towards Theo then absolute disaster because I think there is enough people surrounding him in the organization that know what they’re doing that he can’t possibly be a disaster.

Yup, young analytics guy didn't work out well for Phoenix. Yeah, but what was worked out in that market with that team. Chayka was throw into the deep end without a lot above him or around him to lean on to help guide him. At least Dubas has someone he answers to with a history of success who is respected league wide who has full control over the direction of the hockey team. He also has the budget to have good assistants and a wide array of other brains to pick and opinion to hear from just within his own teams front office. Arizona gave Chayka full power but not a lot of help with a team stuck in a perennial rebuild in a market without a lot of attention. No shock it hasn't resulted in immediate success.

It's the support he has around him that should allow him to become one of the best in the league with the team he has to work with. I really hope he has Hunter for another year to help run the drafting and scouting.

The biggest change in recent years I’ve noticed with the Leafs, pre-cap era it was just spend money and do whatever, trade 1sts/prospects/anything to be competitive. After the cap era began, they tried to operate the same way. Then Shanny came in and they realized that while they can’t spend more than other teams on their players, they can spend more than other teams on the assistants, scouts, etc, etc anything they want to make their front office and organization as strong as possible from the top down. Dubas is surrounding with plenty of strong people in the organization and while they’ll ultimately lose some, they will also gain a lot too.

Lamarello gonna head to the Islanders and Mark Hunter would make a good replacement for Bergevin ......Kubas still has Cliff Fletcher to ping off of ........any truth to the rumour that Matthews wanted Kubas as the next GM ?

Chayka has only been the GM in Arizona two years, and he's made some good moves IMO. For them it's a marathon and not a sprint. Hjalmarson, Stepan, Raanta and Nick Cousins were all solid deals.
