High Button Sports had a podcast last month with Brad Hartlin about card collecting/investing. It was very informative for someone like me who's not 'into' the hobby/industry. He is the big bulk submitter to PSA for Canada.

I believe there was a Brady card that just recently sold for several million. This was after he announced his retirement so likely won't be the best time to try and purchase any of his cards. Ovechkin cards have been really jumping up in value, however, now might still be a good time to grab some as it will only increase if/when he beats Gretzky's goal scoring record. Even Crosby's cup rookie has been selling in the 6 figure range. depending on the patch. Ever since Covid hit, cards in all sports have been sky rocketing. If Ovechkin breaks the record, Crosby will be just a guy compared to Ovechkin in the eye of collectors.

Yep its getting back to being a more popular hobby. From the little bit of research i've done into it the real value for an adult looking to it as an investment is to purchase by the box to guarantee yourself some inserts. But I tried picking it back up as a hobby recently and would buy 3-4 different packs on pay day and the overall look of even basic cards are very nice compared to the 90's versions many of us have seen over the years. But I quickly realized buying say 1 box every 2-3 months is probably a better idea and hope to do that soon. Great thing to get kids into as well if they're at all interested in playing/watching certain sports. I don't think it is a kids hobby anymore, unless they are convinced Chronicles are good cards. When I was a kid in the junk wax era, I thought I would be rich when I was older from those cards. Even as a kid, it was about the fun of collecting but about future value. Turns out, that junk wax wasn't worth the paper it was printed on.

Great thing to get kids into as well if they're at all interested in playing/watching certain sports. I was big into card collecting when I was younger, mostly just hockey cards and I have amassed quite a collection. I cherish them but probably won’t ever sell them due to the memories surrounding them… even though some of the prices on the cards has sky rocketed to a point where I’ve considered it. They make some really beautiful cards and I’d almost always get a box for Christmas, my birthday, etc… then buy god knows how many with my friends and as a hobby. I’d love to get back into it but it’s gotten a lot more expensive then I remember and the explosion in card value hasn’t helped the price of boxes. You used to be able to pick up some older stock from places that still had them for relatively cheap but since the hobbies picked back up, the prices on those boxes has exploded too. There’ll come a day where I get back into it, hopefully sooner rather then later. I can’t begin to count the number of times I was driven to the card store and we’d open packs, buy boxes and have a great time. My parents were never bothered by how I was “wasting” my money on it either, they saw how well I took care of the cards and the enjoyment it brought. I love seeing younger kids get into it. Throw out your junk wax! Kidding. Are your best cards graded?

When you consider how kids spend their time now I think anything that gets them out of a screen and touching/feeling/reading things is beneficial. Looking back as a kid...the hockey cards I collected really did teach me a lot of lessons around taking care of things and learning how to place a proper value on things. I also liked reading and understanding the stats which as a hockey fan meant I was also learning soft skills such as how to say names properly and how to do some basic math (G+A=P, SA/GA=Save% kinds of things) which absolutely made my parents life easier going through elementary school as I was a bit ahead of the curve on some of those things. Cards made my childhood so fun, then around 95 I got out. Back in now, but not all-in, very selective.

Turns out, that junk wax wasn't worth the paper it was printed on. Its not even about the high end cards with kids. Go for the Wal Mart type and just get them in the habit of taking care of the likely less valuable stuff. I still have some 90's rookies and insert cards in pretty good condition but have never had any graded. But am tempted to at least do my own little review of them after watching that podcast.

Only thing I remember from my card collecting days is the terrible gum that lost all flavour after 1.2 seconds.

With junk wax, consider the cost of grading vs what the card would get for you if it were to come back and 8 or 9. PSA is the top dog, but for now they are expensive to grade, after they had to close their business because they were overloaded, they expect cheaper options to return and slowly has been coming back. SGC is becoming popular to use as well. When I selected cards for grading, I used a device that I could wear on my head that had magnifying glass and a light. I received mostly 10's when the cards were returned to me.

I’d really only do it if I was thinking about selling them, otherwise it just seems like I’m wasting my money.
