I had some time so I checked out the practice this morning, it's a really interesting perspective seeing guys in a practice setting. What I like is you get to see a lot of the one-on-one battles, goalies getting challenged more consistently, that kinda thing.
Not that I'm rooting for anyone to fail, but, I can't see Todd or Welsh being back.
Welsh I just think he's too small, he's a scoring forward who's just not really big, strong, or skilled enough to translate in at the Q level.
Todd... he looks like he's just going through the motions. Honestly of every forward on the training camp roster I've seen, he's easily been the worst. He's playing like he thinks he can't loose his spot, or like he already thinks he has. There's at least 4 guys who I would realistically like to see on that 4th line over him, and that's not including the skill guys like Kilfoil and Fontaine.
Levesque, Bent, and quietly Mathis Laplante are all way quicker, harder on pucks, and 2 of those 3 are taller than him too.
Intra-squad line-ups for this afternoon just posted, they're missing a few names... Todd notably being one.

Dropped by this morning and watched both groups practice. I know everyone's focused on the new players and who is competing for roster spots, but I was blown away by Owen Phillips. He looked visibly bigger and was absolutely ripping pucks past the goalies on rush drills. The sky is the limit for him and if given the right opportunities - I think he is primed for a huge offensive season in his draft year.

Big kid that fills the net well and technically sound in his movements.

I like this comment as it puts some weight on my thought that our current roster team is not ready for a Championship year. The new young guys mentioned are great for the future in 2-3 years, but if we want to go for it this year, none of those guys need to have any kind of important role on the team. Don’t forget that the Remparts had Robidas on the 3rd and Gaucher on the 2nd or 3rd and they had 0 16 years old and not sure that they had any 17 years old, same for Sherbrooke and Gatineau last year. But I like that we have some players that would be an improvement to our younger core. Happy to hear that. I know, it’s only a rookie camp and I know Cam knows all this

Watched 2 periods of the intrasquad and had to leave , but another dominant performance by peitzche , I think he’s found his groove big and strong and controls the play , he’s ready to step up line up for sure and kilfoil was good again as well , few rookie mistakes but he’s gonna be good one as well like citrus has said .
Fontaine and ponzetto are not noticable may be some nerves
Bent another good game for him
Nassradine looks good another year if u18 will serve him well .
St. Onge and James were good as well

I know a kid who went to the same highschool as Todd, and what I was told about him was that he perhaps was a little more on the arrogant side, but in the way that he believes in himself and his abilities... perhaps a bit too much. From what I've been told, it would be out of character for a guy like Todd to mail it in if he thinks he's not gonna make the cut.

Do we all remember how good Crosby looked last year in training camp/preseason.

Do we all remember how good Crosby looked last year in training camp/preseason. Yea for sure, it's important to keep in mind this is a short camp and the Veterans aren't here. These rosters are better than a U18 Team, but that's definitely not up to Major Junior standards.

I went to the scrim this afternoon as well, this will be a shorter post.
It seemed to me that guys were getting more comfortable, but also there was a ton of fatigue by the end of day 2 as well.
Aiden Bent performed well again, but he was clearly gassed by the end of the game.
Yannic Ponzetto looked way better today, as he's getting comfortable and getting more physical he's seeming to get a lot better.
I'm a big fan of Eddy Doyle too, not for this year, it would be criminal to keep him on the team just to have him in the press box all season, but... he reminds me a little bit of Cole Larkin at the same age.
Mathis Laplante is growing on me as well.
Bleh, I'm a bit tired tonight, so I'll stop at that. But, excited to see the first pre-season game tomorrow.
I imagine we'll see a round of cuts tonight or tomorrow morning.

Today's thoughts....
Peitzsche played very well but I'll echo yesterday's comments / Jacques Strap in that we are at a rookie camp roster composed of mostly guys that will never sniff Major Junior. He should be one of the top players. Now, you can tell he has become a more confident player, and even looks to not be going 100% for the entire duration of the game, but was the best player on the ice.
Kilfoil was much better in comparison to yesterday - more noticeable and managed the puck a lot better. Playing with Peitzsche obviously helped show off his skillset, but he set up numerous chances and wrung one off the crossbar on a rush in the final frame. Noticed a lot better play off the puck offensively, did a great job finding the "honey hole" as F3 today and was willing to play below the goalline with the puck, engaging in contact with defenders. He will be special in 2-3 seasons, no doubt about it.
Welsh was tough to watch - he is what he is. Likely not be here at the end of camp. Todd did not play today (nor Levesque), big couple days upcoming for two returnees.
I'd pencil Bent into a potential 4th line energy role. A 2006-born that could buy into an energy/PK role. He's done everything you could ask for a player with a limited resume in the two intrasquad games. Better yesterday than today but still one of the better players on the ice.
Lonzetto... there's some potential no question but leaves you wanting more. Saw a few more flashes but plays on the perimeter for the majority & wants to make the extra pass. There was a chance off the rush in the 2nd where if he bears down and wires one he's probably on the board. In terms of a role in the top 6, Kilfoil is likely more deserving from limited viewings. If Lonzetto can learn to use his size + put on some muscle, once he gets adjusted to NA hockey he'll become a solid forward by 19. However, would be hard to see him as an impact player this season.
Nasrreddine was just okay today, better performance yesterday. Really intrigued to see him progress over the year and come back to camp with a further year of development (skating, physical maturity, etc.). Kid finds himself in good spots and makes things happen with the puck on his stick.
Boucher definitely had a bounce-back game today - more of what we saw last training camp.
Overall, of the combined rosters, I'd probably keep the following for main camp: Peitzsche, Kilfoil, Laplante, Nasrreddine (Green Fs) Boucher, McKenzie (Green D) Ponzetto, Bent, Fontaine, Welsh (White Fs) Doyle, Mokriakov (White D) Milner, St. Onge, Foti (Goalies)
EDIT: Maybe Todd sticks for an exhibition game too - another tough watch yesterday though.

I err on the side of caution when a returning player looks great in camp. Regular season tells a better story. Also, sometimes a player starts coming around in the second half.

I'd add a couple to who I'd keep for main camp. I've liked Dominic MacKenzie through camp, he's been very good in board battles, I think I'd give him another week or two in camp. Up front, for pre-season games there gonna need a few extra forwards, so I'd give Wallace, Clarke, maybe O'Neil a few more games. Will Carroll I've actually been a bit of a fan of too. I don't know how much offensive upside he has, but he has some potential as a #3 shutdown C. There are 21 forwards by my count in rookie camp, +6 veterans returning, so... 27 total. The first round of cuts I'd probably go down from 21 to about... 15 or so? Because we're going to end up keeping about 8 in the end.
