As far as computer go, I would stay away from HP. They don't have the best warranty or service and if your computer goes down god help you if you are not a computer person. HP's quality is not comparable to a Dell and the service is no where near it.
If you are not computer savvy, I would always recommend a Dell. They have the best support (actually amazing support) when you have warranty. Also if you are not computer savvy I would recommend getting the extended warranty. I have had a Dell computer for three years now and they only thing wrong with it is it's 3 years old and the HD is on the small side. But it's my wife's PC since I have a laptop so I have no reason to upgrade it. :-)
For laptops I would stay away from Sony Vaios. They are nice and compact, which is great for the traveler but the batteries suck (I get less than 1 hour - which defeats the purpose of a laptop if I need to be plugged in). The Sony laptops under perform, lots of resources used by "system" resources. If you have less than 1GB of memory you will notice a large performance hit if you have mutliple browsers and say word open at the same time. For example I am using 930 MBs right now and I only have 3 browsers open, MS Visio and MS Excel. I will give Sony Vaio props for durability. I have been using this laptop for 2 years this September and it has been on xrayed about 150 times, been stored and tossed around on about 300 differet plans, and travelled to 3-4 different continents and it still keeps ticking. Also I don't take great care of it since it's not mine and I would like a new one. ;-)
I also had a compaq laptop for a day. Brand new, started it up once worked great. Shutdown, restarted it later on, and it didn't start. Had to send it back to my company. I guess compaqs can be known for having this problem.
I would also stay away from Dell laptops. I think they are getting better, but not the same quality as a desktop.
The best laptop on the market is a Toughbook. They cost more money, but good luck trying to abuse that thing! The name says it all, and it is by far the most durable on the market.
Oh and about Cosco, easiest return policy in the world (well next to Sears). I have purchased a few computer things from there and returned some just because I didn't actually need it (impulse by). I returned it with no questions asked. Good luck doing that at Future Shop..they are a pain in the ass to deal with. I avoid computer equipment at future shop like the plague. The staff will sell you anything with out question (even if it's the opposite for what you want). I have power adapters for countries I will never visit because Future Shop sold me the wrong items (guaranteeing it would work)...only to not allow me to return it.
