Anyone remember the specifics of how the Bartulis trade went down two years ago? He was definitely traded on draft day, but I can't recall if it was announced before the draft, or just at the time of the pick - seems to me it was the latter ... but that could just have been because media coverage of the draft while in progress is very limited ... the deal may well have been submitted to the Q at the start of the draft, but not announced until the Cats stepped forward to pick in C-B's spot ... Thats not the same thing as releasing the player to draft another. The process protects the player. If he is being traded ... then arguably the player has a pl;ace to play within the league ... but if he was released in the middle of the draft he wouldn't have a place to play in the CHL. If you release him before the draft ... he re-enters the draft and has the opportunity to catch on with another team ... plus it gives all teams the opportunity to aquire him. Once the draft starts ... the draft pool should not change by having players added to it.

Totally agree ... but lets say the Cats have a guy in mind that may or may not be available by the time the 44th pick rolls around ... I am sure that they don't need to release Bezak outright, someone in the league would take him as a 2nd euro, especially at no cost ... so they could hold Bezak ... when #44 rolls around, if the guy they want is gone, they keep Bezak and pass on the pick (or trade it if there is any demand at all and recuperate some/all of the 6th we paid to get it) ... or, if the guy they want is still there, they deal Bezak somewhere in the league, even if it is for the good old "sans compensation" (the cost of the new guy is then Bezak plus a 6th - still worthwhile if the player is good).

OK ... but that would be trading the player ... not releasing him. And keep in mind that all teams will draft Euros to fill up their two spots ... but may not have any success drafting a high end guy ... nor drafting a guy that will report. So ... you'd have to have a deal with a team that still has any empty Euro slot after 44 which is probably slim pickin's ... because if they are picking before 44 they won't know the status of Bezak until 44 comes up. The fact that the pick is 44 in a draft that normally only has 65 or so picks ... makes it difficult to find a partner. Yes ... I think most teams would take Bezak in favour of a guy they can get in Round 2 ... but you can still get a great player in Rd 2 if you have resources. Last year ... only 5 players were selected by Q teams after the 44th pick ... in 2006 ... only 3 players were selected by Q teams after 44 .... so by the time we get down to 44 there aren't many teams left looking for another Euro.

Lets put 44th into perspective ... it is the 15th Q pick of the draft ... and in 2006 only 18 Euros were drafted by Q teams ... in 2007 only 20 Euros were drafted by Q teams. So 44th is a very late pick in the draft ... finding a trading partner for Bezak that still has a Euro slot open after 44 will be tough.

Wondering if Rimouski or Quebec have a deal with Moncton for their 5th overall draft as they are looking for impact players in the Euro draft.

According to Junior Express, the Cats will use their first pick to choose Russian Dman Vjateslav Voinov. He was picked 32nd overall by the Kings last Saturday. www.juniorexpress.ca/

I'd rather take two forwards in the draft that can make a big impact on our offense ... but maybe this Dman can do that as well.

That would give you guys a potentially filthy defensive unit this year and absolutely scary next year
Of course you would be relying on an awful lot of improvement from your forward core to score the goals needed to win games... but they say defense wins championships

If it's true, the fans who yell shoooooot all the time on the PP will get their wish with the Cats absolutely sick D! ;D

in the Acadie Nouvelle this morning, Danny Flynn said would not comment when asked about Bezak's future on the team Which suggests to me that he will be traded ... otherwise he would have no problem saying he will be released and we will select two Euros. He can't comment because he can't comment on a trade outside of the trading period.

The NHL draft was only last week and agents, GM's etc would be busy deciding where it would be best for a player to land. Top end Euro's have lots of options for sure.
