As I've said on this issue other times it has come up on various boards .... these play-by-play guys spend long hours on the bus, in the hotels, around the rink, etc, with these kids ... and they become friends with them. So it is very difficult to not be a homer when it is your friends out there on the ice. We are all homers when we post on here ... so it is no different for a guy that gets paid by the team to broadcast games. I agree, most guys are... its impossible not to be really. But some are much more "why us? why us? Oh the humanity" type guys lol... some guys really whine about the refs, and call every PP for their team legit as there was a "blatant" penalty... then act all confused when they get called for one and say things like "well.... I ~guess~ there was a hook in there somewhere... heh... what can you do I guess..." I dont care if they are homers, but some guys seem to almost be insulting the visiting team at times... Just like the home fans in most rinks ... its human nature to be outraged at "perceived" violations against your own team that go uncalled ... and downplay the things that get called against your own team. There are very few people on these boards that actually give the Refs credit for a good game ... and they far too often get blamed for losses ... usually out of frustration that the home team lost due to taking too many penalties ... or a penalty late in the game that results in the winning PP goal.

Complaining about the officiating is Canada's second-most favourite sport.... It would help if people had realistic expectations. When Carruthers officiates, you know there will be 20-25 powerplays (combined) on the night - when Pellerin ref's, he'll let a lot more borderline stuff go compared to Carruthers. That makes for different games, but teams adapt to that, just like baseball players adapt to different strike zones for different umpires.
What drives me crazy are the inconsistent refs - who call the borderline stuff, let the obvious stuff go for one period - then call it different later on, and then put the whistle away for the third.
Unfortunately, there's a tendency to paint all officials with the same brush - I have a friend who refuses to go to any Cats games anymore because of the terrible job Dutil did 3 years ago in a game against Bathurst....
And then there are the games where the ref is clearly watching a different game that I am, and there's no telling where the calls are coming from (Murphy's first game at the Coliseum this year comes to mind).

I like Gerry Green for his enthusiasm and we could do a lot worse. He is the HOME team announcer so you shouldnt be surprised if he has a little more feeling for the Cats. I only have one criticism and I bring it up because aftre three years he should know that it is NicoLAH Riopel not NicoLIE. It's just one of those things that annoys the heck out of me when he says it.

He's the biggest homer going. Maybe that's why you guys like him. Most of the announcers on the radio or webcasts are homers....they're calling the game for they're team, of course they're going to be one sided. I like Gerry, I even liked Les (who I have a ton of respect for) as an announcer, I think its great to have the away games availible to watch or listen to or those like myself who can't make it to very many home games anymore due to my newborn, I watch it on the web. When we get frustrated with the mistakes the Les used to make getting confused on which player is who or when the Cats dump the puck in and Gerry gets all excited because its a "big scoring chance", we need to remember that they don't do that job for a living, they aren't pros like the ones we see/hear on HNIC. Hey Mikeb, whats the Titans announcer like? Better than Green. I don't want anyone to mistake what I am saying. Yeah the home team announcers are biased. I know that. Green is the worst of the bunch IMO. I don't expect any Moncton fan to agree (although one did).

I really enjoy listening to Marty Kingston chat with Gerry after the game...keeps me entertained on the drive home. As for Green himself, nowhere does he proclaim complete objectivity, so I therefore fully embrace his homer-ism!

Sure he is a homer but that is part of his job to sell the product and inject some enthusiasm into the broadcast.

Gerry Green does a very good job. In fact, I think we in the English part of the QMJHL are lucky to have some very good radio announcers as a whole.

I am not a big Gerry Green fan but, he is better than some of the others out there. McNeil in Cape-Breton is a real homer and that guy in PEI is just plain awful , Cory something.

Green is a homer, eh? well i would hope so. who listens to him every game? CATS FANS! we're not gonna want to listen to a guy who is against the team we cheer for. don't forget who pays him too, eh? one more thing, i have no problem with him criticising referees as there has never been a referee in the history of the league who has been biased towards the Wildcats.

I am thankful that we can listen to the games period. When you keep things in perspective, I have grown to like Gerry's broadcasts. He seems to be a true fan of the Cat's rather than some one who just wants to hear his own voice like a few amateur PA guys that bounce from one location to another. I would be disappointed if he was anything less than a homer. I respect the time and effort he's willing to put in to allow us to follow the Cat's no matter where we are. It's not any easy job, even for those who try to make it a career. Go Gerry.

As for Green himself, nowhere does he proclaim complete objectivity, so I therefore fully embrace his homer-ism! Was anyone listening last month when Gerry spent like 10 minutes talking up some visiting goalie to Marty during the postgame. Turns out that certain goalie didn't even play that night. Gerry was a little embarassed when Marty had to correct him. Maybe we should get Gerry some new glasses or move him down to ice level for the games........... Love the "WOO" though. Whenever something goes good at work, home or anywhere else in public we usually shout out a "WOOO"......a la Rick Flair
