I think he meant a separate line for the tickets.

Market it right, get on campus, make contact with Student Associations, make sure it's like the way the Penguins do it, with a seperate line (maybe not in the box office? as that area is crammed enough prior to the game). What are you suggesting that Dal students only be allowed on the West side of MC, and SMU on the East side? Surely you're not as that is segragation by association and would get the students mad as hell at each other ... yelling across the arena and all! I'm sorry, but that just shouldn't be permitted under any circumstances. I think he meant a separate line for the tickets. Catnut is exactly right. If you read the links to the articles I posted, you will see that the 'rush' part of student rush is that they put these tickets on sale and available on a first-come first-serve basis. In Pittsburgh, this means students begin lining up as soon as they can (in fact, the organization has had to make rules on how early they can line up). Knowing the box office area and the amount of traffic that is in there on a game night (people meeting other people, people visiting Antlers, people purchasing tickets and so on), I was simply suggesting that if something like the student rush was considered, that line might be better placed elsewhere in order to make it run a bit smoother. This would also help with checking for student IDs and so on, making sure that only the appropriate, eligible students get access to the discount.

I think atmosphere gets blown out of proportion on these boards...... the atmosphere in every single rink in the Maritimes is pretty similar............... put a solid product on the ice with a hard working team and people will respond but don't ever expect 34 nights of jammed buildings with people stomping and painting themselves up and yelling/taunting the opponents... it isn't going to happen bois hits the nail on the head IMO ... there is no magic solution ... Last spring, in the second half of the regular season and the playoffs, the Coliseum was rocking ... the anticipation was building, and the bandwagon was filling up; the team was the talk of the town, and even casual fans were looking forward to game nights and talking about the team around the water cooler. Between whistles, the crowd was going nuts with the cardboard noisemakers, the music was good, etc... Flash forward to this year ... they handed out the exact same noisemakers for the first two home games ... played many of the same songs - but they didn't seem as good, and most of the noisemakers sat unused ... the magic is gone. Like many fans, last spring, I was cheering wildly - booing questionable calls, heckling opposing players, pounding my noisemaker until my hands were sore. This fall, there isn't as much to get excited over - I still love going to the games, but I watch them in a more detached manner ... I roll with the bad calls, appreciate the nice plays made by opposing players, focus on the little things our boys are doing right (or wrong) - not so much cheering for my team as I am enjoying the game of hockey. Some day, probably in a couple of years, the Cats will be back in the hunt for the cup ... the magic will be back in the air ... and I will undoubtedly once again be cheering wildly. But until then, it is hard to go nuts 34 times a year when the ultimate goal is unreachable - there will be nights or plays that will get me out of my seat ... they will just be a little less frequent ... and I think that holds true for most people. Winning trumps all when it comes to atmosphere... Very well said. I listened to your guys' home opener on audio webcast, and even your magic playoff goal song - Chelsea Dagger - just didn't at all have any oomph when Moncton scored their lone goal of that game. It actually sounded out of place, and probably should be retired as the championship song and nothing else. But last spring, boy that song soared after every Cats goal.

Five items that will improve the atmosphere in the rink
1) Play less music - During last weekends home opener, Halifax had taken a time out - just as the action was about to start, the crowd wanted to clap and cheer. Instead of going silent and allowing the crowd to do its business, the DJ (I assume it is no longer Ian Robinson?) fired up a song, drowning out the crowd. Less is more.
2) Play different music - Last week was my first game in over two years, and yet I still knew what song was coming up next. Time to switch things up.
3) Kill the mascot vignettes - they are not funny. It was a nice try, but scrap it and move on.
4) Make the rink smaller - use tarps to eliminate half of the upper bowl - this will give a more “full” feeling.
5) Give away free seats to university societies. Bottom line, were not getting 8 thousand plus any more. Why not comp 500 to 1000 seats per game and give them to universities and youth groups? This will increase the atmosphere, and the new fans will (hopefully) have fun and actually purchase seats in the future. Comp tickets built a fanbase in 1994 - it will be a useful tool to rejuvenate.
If that doesn't work - I got one word for you:

If that doesn't work - I got one word for you: Vuvuzela I agree with most of those things. I remember in the first few years of the team, they had black tarps covering the empty upper bowl seats. I think it would work and give a better feel to the rink. Everybody knows of the teams' struggles the last few years, so its not big secret attendance isn't what it once was. Until the team becomes more competitive, I see no reason for them not to try and do something about the empty seats. The team might not like to do it, because it would be them admitting they can't draw fans and almost conceding something. That would be a big hit to the ego of the team, so I won't hold my breath for it to happen. The music. I've been complaning about this for years. Ian Robinson has been around for years, he's been good, done his thing, but it's time for a change. He's terrible at capturing a moment of a game and amplifying it with some good music. It's always too much kids stuff, too much local music and too much of the same thing every year. The same music at the same times of a game. Nothing against some of that music, but it's not good sporting music. Hell I think before the game on Sat Night, he had Macy Gray "I Try" playing. That was 10 years ago!! And it was a shit song then....and what kind of energy or atmosphere does that bring to the game?? Puts people to sleep ffs

So after a number of years of just reading this board it took this topic to make me sign up for an account! I have had “The M/C is a library” notion for a number of years. I have been going to the games since January 2000 leading up to the Mem. Cup. And became a season ticket holder shortly thereafter.
Two thoughts.
I do not enjoy random noise for the sake of making noise. Yes, this is usually generated by children, I myself have brought a child who screams go moose go at the oddest moment and am trying to educated them on such topics – a scream or yell is one thing but a shriek that is not understandable and just for the sake of making an outburst is useless and annoying. As is the constant drone of horns that are not because of any actual game play – love them when they have started up and the players haven’t even come out for warm ups yet! However to say that all children should be only allowed in the upper bowl is crazy and will only make the atmosphere worse because as thought number two states….
Moose fans are BORING! I am sorry to be making such a harsh statement in my first post. There is however a lot of truth in it. Bernie is bang on!! There is a large cross section of the fan base that don’t react unless it is negative. Even in the good years these 50+ grumpy old men hardly even add a smattering of applause for a goal yet throw their arms up in frustration or heckle an errant pass or some other Moosehead miscue. As if they could do better. These are the same people that are annoyed at the likes of Hal and Mac when they are trying to get the crowd into a game. No wonder our mascots don’t do much since they get no positive reaction from the largest portion of the crowd. Fanatical Phil had the same problem as well. It was hilarious watching him try to get some old farts to clap to the music. No matter how good the ‘talent’, these arms folded across their chest, sit down and shut up types are too much of a bunch of stick in the muds to actually cheer and support these young players that, win or lose, are out there trying.
My favorite is the old guy who sits on the aisle half way down his section. This idiot hates having to get up to let people out of the row and always has a dirty look and head shake that he shares with his ‘buddy’ across the aisle. Here’s a tip…. If you don’t want to have to move, don’t sit on the end of the row! Of course, nothing tops bringing out the old cowbells for playoffs and the looks you get!
Yes the DJ is tiring but the organ doesn't get the crowd hyped with his 50 yr old ditties
These hockey players need our support in good seasons and bad regardless of how you feel the direction of the club is going or job the owner, gm or coach are doing.
Is this the longest 1st post rant?

They should change up the music a bit more. I remember one time the Mooseheads were shorthanded and the DJ played "Four Sticks" by Led Zeppelin. I thought that was really clever, but I never heard the song at a game again. Not saying they should do that in every shorthanded situation. Maybe the song only fires me up because I like LZ. ;D

During the intrasquad games, there was less music, and you could here plenty of comments from the crowd.

I find there to be a large amount of tradition lost these last few years from the past. Examples: fans don't stand up and clap before OT with the bells on. And nobody stands towards the north/canadian flag when the anthem is playing. These examples might not seem substantial but they are signs that the fan base disregards tradition which to me is a huge ingredient in good atmosphere.
The music they play this year is horrible, even Willy Palov twitter'd about it during a game from the press box. With Shannon Slaughter gone the new guy asks the same questions in the always useless 'moosehead minute' segment. (Granted it's only been two games).
I agree that the mascots aren't anything special. Booby Mac gets the crowd going more than anyone else.
Edit: Sorry. On the blackberry, have fat finger symdrome.

Ian Robinson is no longer the DJ and hasn't been for a couple of seasons. He is now the public address announcer but that duty does not include the DJ.

Shannon Slaughter had the charisma of a coat-rack, I am more than willing to give the new guy a chance! And about the anthem thing, I think It would help if they removed the digital flag from the big screen, and for a few games actually directed people to face the flag on the north wall. And yea, its hard to get people excited for stuff after these 2 seasons, but its time to start getting excited again. After Champini's goal last Saturday I jumped up and began cheering and clapping, only to look around and feel somewhat awkward as there were not a lot of people standing! I mean its the kids first goal in the Q in only his second game, and he knocks his own rebound out of mid air into the back of the net, that's the kind of first goal you tell your grand kids about! After 2 disappointing seasons I think that is something to cheer about!

I jumped out of my seat too! First time in quite a while I've done that - it felt good! ... but you are right there were a lot of people around me who didn't.
