Ugh. Russell is not the weak link. Russell did a pretty good job last season (especially the second half). The team and the players improved throughout the season, two of his players were 1st round NHL picks. His team finished the season extremely hot, won a playoff round and were the only team in the Q to beat Lewiston. The weak link on the Moose has been talked about all summer, it's not the coaching. It's the goaltending! Russell has done nothing that shows he is a good coach ... nothing whatsoever. Halifax had the best PK unit in the Q last year with an 85.1% success rate. With Roger Kennedy and Mark Yetman in nets, I'd say a lot of that success can be attributed to the system put in place by Russell and the rest of the coaching staff.

The team also had good chemistry moving later into the season and that was with a few moves at Christmas. And when things were not going great there were a couple interesting lines combo that seemed pretty strange or random but had success... Hillier - Corsi - Peters jumps to mind. I thought despite a lot of youth and a young D they got lots from the team late in the season. Also, it seemed like after every loss in the playoffs they came out the next game a better team. It takes a team a while to adjust to a coach and I think he was getting a hard working, physical, two way game from every type of player in the end.

Cam was a rookie coach with a young team last year. I rarely missed RinkRant talk and I disagree with the post that he shit on his players I never heard him dish his boys even when he should have .....I think the team likes playing for him and have talked to some players that confirmed this. This year will tell but I think he can make the tough decisions. I am excited to be a moose fan this year....Bring It On!!!!!!!!! (I didnt think Lewistown was that good last year............no way they finish ahead of us this year)

I think the question is - does he want to be coach. I heard rumours at the end of last season that he wasn't happy and might leave. If he leaves it may be his choice. Although I would have thought he would have left by know if he wanted out.

Stupid staement on your part! Russell isn't going anywhere this upcoming season, maybe if the Mooseheads flop this season you might see a change in 2008-09 season, maybe. That's hilarious! My first thread and I get called out. First of all, it was a question, not a "staement", so I immediately disregarded your post. Second, thx to the rest of you for sharing your opinion. Good point on the goalie front. Third, I believe the team improved more with Marcel's Xmas changes than with Russell's coaching. Hopefully, with a year under his belt he'll be more comfortable. Go Moose!

I personally thought he did a good job last season and fully expect him to be better this one.

I personally thought he did a good job last season and fully expect him to be better this one. I did... but for the life of me I cant remember exact words... its not like he said to John Moore "Johnny, I just have to say, Saulnier played like shit tonight" It was more a response to a situation or a question, like Moore saying "a fan wanted to know if Pouliot was hurt in the the third as he didnt play"... and Russell would say "no, I benched him.. I wasnt happy with the effort he was giving, along with a couple other veterans, and if they arent going to play hard they wont play"... etc... But on a number of occasions, he bad mouthed the actual player as it was who they were talking about, and didnt just make a blanket statement that didnt single out guys. Like I said, he will be brutally honest and it can work, but some dont respond to it well. There was a number of times I cringed at the radio as he went into a decent rant about one or two guys specifically... not that I dont like the honesty, but you never know who will react what way...

To be honest, I felt Russell found his footing heading into the second half of the season and it showed with the team (it also helped with the few changes that were made). Heading down the stretch, the team did gel together and I remember one of the Mooseheads either on rink rant or somewhere saying that Russell was a great coach and I took that at face value because at that point in time, he had been showing his ability to get the most out of his players.
Calling players out? I know that on a couple of occasions (again on Rink Rant) that Russell said things that I thought were a bit harsh. Some will say that he spoke the truth but to me, tell the kid one on one and let this stuff be behind closed doors. If the player listens to what the coach is saying, he'll know it because he'll find himself working harder and back in the line up. If he opts not to listen, he'll be sitting so there is no need to try and motivate a player through the media.

There were a couple moves he made last year early on that had a few people calling for his head, but as the season progressed, as did the ice product. I was pleased with the end result last year, and agree that this is a very important season for him behind the bench.
The only major issue I have is his inability to recognize when a timeout has to be called. I recall game 3 vs. Moncton I think they had us 4-1 or 5-1 with a few quick ones to open up the 2nd period and he just waited until the game as out of reach to call a timeout to settle the nerves. We wound up losing by one goal I believe.

As Sutter once said all great teams begin in the nets ( still can't believe we drafted 3 straight goaltenders from Newfoundland ) UNBIELABLE !!!!!!!!! Cool your jets, you can't expect to get a D'Orso, Poulin or Riopel when your drafting goalies as high as the 4th round. It has nothing to do with our scouting. Patenaude doesn't even sem to care for drafting goaltenders since he's famous for bringing in mediocres and turning them into a professional calibre.

Wasn't D'orsso a 4th rounder? ...but I agree with your point, if you want to be strong in nets you ahve to draft a top goalie in the early rounds every 2-3 years.

Yes he was, but my point is that you can't just EXPECT to pick up amazing goalie prospects in the middle rounds. Once in awhile you may hit the jackpot.

Actually D'Orso was a 5th round pick...if he was two inches taller he would have went before Riopel.
There were a bunch of goalies picked BEFORE Yetman in 2005 who are busts so its not like the Mooseheads made a bad choice based on talent...Boulianne (2nd rd), Roy and Barriere (3rd rd), Black (4th rd) and Fisher (5th rd).
