In other alumni news, former Wildcats defenseman Thierry Kaszap looks to become a Vanier Cup champion on Friday night as he'll be in the lineup for the Laval Rouge et Or as they take on the McMaster Marauders. I thought I heard the name of Dominique Noel also in the Laval lineup ... is that the same former Q star from northern NB (Lameque ?) Different Dominic Noel.

Mark Barberio wants to continue to improve at the AHL level so that when he receives a shot at making it to the NHL he is ready. "I just have to keep putting my work in on the ice and in the gym," he said. "The step from junior to the AHL was big and I'm pretty sure the step from the AHL to the NHL is even bigger. So that just means I have to be in better shape, and stronger ... because the guys up there are even bigger and faster so that means whatever I'm doing now I have to keep improving. You always have to try to improve or else you are never going anywhere." Barberio was presented with the Eddie Shore Award, which goes to the AHL's most outstanding defenseman, last season after he produced 61 points in 74 games. He has gotten off to another strong start this campaign with three goals and 11 points in his first 14 contests. However, the Lightning blueline is fairly crowded at the moment, so it may take some more time before he gets his shot.

I spoke with a former player tonight and learned that Cody Doucette suffered a serious eye injury and can no longer play hockey due to vision problems. He was playing with the St.Georges Cool 103.5 FM of the LNAH. This would have been his seventh season in the league where he racked up 1490 PIMS and 228 fights(pre/reg/playoffs combined) in 236 games.

Thats unfortunate ... but After 228 fights ... it is probably a good thing that he is forced to hang up his skates ... that is too many and simply can't be healthy.

Former Moncton Wildcats defenceman Nathan Saunders was injured in a traffic accident in Prince Edward Island and his hockey career could very well be in jeopardy. Saunders, who has been playing senior hockey in Newfoundland with the Western Royals, apparently flipped his truck and is in hospital wearing a neck brace that he will have to wear for the next three months because of a a broken vertebrate in his neck.

Riopel is having a great year in the UK this season on a weak team.
3.11 GAA and .923 in 23 games and has probably been the best goalie in the league up to this point.

What does the calibre of this league compare to ... I'm not terribly impressed by his stats from a nothing league that is not really on any hockey map. He should be toiling away in the minors over here ... in the Colonial League or the West Texas Hockey league ... or even in the NAHL in Quebec. OR ... come home and play CIS.

It's probably on a par with the ECHL.
