It mentioned in the paper today that the Rocket may keep 8 D for the season. Either that means Owens stays or Main could be a defenceman. Despite my and many others thoughts that the Defense depth chart goes as follow I am pretty sure that they are considering Main a defensemen since that is where he played last season and has played this preseason. Although I suspect he will split time between forward and defense. That way it would be: Lessard Southorn Gervais Swit Clow Malouin Deighan Main (defense & forward) To me the Clow, Malouin & Deighan are too good not to be regularly inserted in the lineup meaning an 8th defenseman would play rarely.

If they go with 8 defenseman by keeping Deighan and Owens, I think the depth chart will look something like this:
lessard southorn gervais Swit Clow Deighan/Malouin/Owens interchangeable
But I don't think they will go with 8 defenseman for the whole season as I feel that one of them will be moved, with Malouin perhaps being traded.

Highly unlikely a second round pick is playing in juniors as an overager.... would be great (for us) if he was but I seriously doubt he will be Bryce Swan will be (more than likely). It all depends on how soon the NHL team has to sign the player. With Swan's late b-day and Lafleurs not being drafted until 18, they are in the same situation. No need to rush them.

With the addition of Little, and the "trade" to keep Schmidt, what is the projected roster?
Forwards Latal-Morrison-Walker Kana-Doyle-Locke Schmidt-Lachaine-Cliche McKinley-DesRoches- MacLean Main Paynter
Street--I think Street will be cut as well. Kid has skill, but I think another year to prepare self would benifit him. Does he need to go back to MAAA or is he able to go into the MJAHL? Coon-Come---I think he'll be in the next set of cuts. Wright---I think he'll be in the next set of cuts.
Dman Lessard-Southorn Clow-Gervais Swit-Deighan/Malouin Little
Owens--See him being sent back to MJAHL
Goalies Lafleur, Antoine Mosher, Evan

DmanLessard-Southorn Clow-Gervais Swit-Deighan/Malouin Little Owens--See him being sent back to MJAHL GoaliesLafleur, Antoine Mosher, Evan There is no way that DesRoches should make it over Street. Street has got great skills and IMO is ready for this league and returning to midget would be a complete waste. DesRoches on the other hand has played very well and I know a lot of people are high on him but I think he would benefit most from a full year in Jr A. Besides I'm still not convinced that he is a Q player and don't think that he would be a good fit on the fourth line. I maintain my opinion that Paynter won't stay with the team and continue the Rocket's trend of cutting 1 19 yr old returning Islander each year (Kris Mac, Snowie, Paynter) I really hope that they keep Coon-Come as I think he would really benefit from being with the team and develop into a good player for us in the future. I found the addition of Little interesting given that we already have 8 Q capable defensemen (plus Main) and because right now 5 of them are expected back next season. So I'm not sure how Little fits into the plans but he is big and apparently not a bad player so it will be interesting to see if there really is potential for him to become a regular defenseman for us. At this point I'm not overly happy with the addition of Little as I think that Malouin should be an every day player although it looks like he will be sharing developmental time with a couple now. And as much as I like Owens he is the logical choice to cut. Savard could also be building a little depth in anticipation of making a big move at Christmas.

Snowie was cut at 18 not 19.. he would be 19 this year if he had attended camp
and KMac was traded not cut loose
I am telling you once again if they cut Paynter they will alienate fans once more and send a terrible message to young players trying out for the club as well
Coon-Come lasting past the CEGEP deadline indicates to me he will make the team
the addition of Little could be a good thing.. nothing wrong with adding some size and we need at least one 18 year old on the backend IMO
Gelinas was added to replace Waye,, good move there tho throwing away a draft pick to acquire someone to last a month or so is a bit wasteful
I still wouldn't be at all shocked to see Malouin cut

I would have thought if they were going to release Malouin they would have traded him and at least got something for him. since the trade deadline has passed, I am assuming he is staying, at least until the next trade period. Its looking more and more like Owens will be released and they will keep 8 D or Deighan will be released too to keep 7....though I doubt that.
There will definitely be a vet forward cut....as there is no room for everyone. My guess is Paynter or McKinley, though I hate to see Paynter go. Hes a leader...and them team needs that.

I am personally a huge fan of his and think he will become a solid top 4 defenseman. KMac was traded because he wasn't going to make the team. You are right on Snowie who was 18 maybe I categorized it wrong as they have shown a history of cutting a contributing member from the previous team. (Lee, K-Mac, Snowie, now I'm guessing Paynter). With regards to Paynter the message that the Rocket should be sending is that they want the players who are the best fit for this team regardless of status, draft position, or home province. I love Paynter's style but the reality is that he is 19 yrs old and the Rocket have decided to add Main to fill Paynter's 4th line role which based on the 2 games I saw was an upgrade. And it doesn't make sense to keep 2 19 yr olds playing a similar style as 12/14th forward ahead of guys like McKinley, MacLean and Street or even Coon-Come. Personally I don't care where a player is from and as hard as Paynter worked last season my opinion is the best possible roster for the Rocket is the following: Walker-Morrison-Locke Kana-Doyle-Latal Cliche-Lachaine-Schmidt MacLean/McKinley-Street-Main Coon-Come Lessard-Southorn Gervais-Clow Swit-Malouin Deighan Little Lafleur Mosher I have heard lots of people saying they would keep Paynter but I have only seen Score suggest who he would cut to make room. And IMO cutting Street to keep Paynter would be a poor choice.

Just take a guess at opening night roster
G- Mosher & Gelinas (LaFleaur at NHL camp) D- Gervais, Swit, Southorn, Little, Deighan, Malouin (Lessard still at Ott camp??) F- Walker, Doyle, Kana Cliche, Lachaine, Locke Schmidt, Desroches, MacLean Paynter, Main, Coon-Come
That's presuming drafted players are still at NHL camps.. wow thats actually a pretty ugly looking opening lineup

Defence
lessard Southorn Gervais Swit Clow Little/Deighan/Malouin Clow will also get PP time
Goal
