Do we know what the rules are if Winnipeg wanted Ehlers to play in Europe at 19? I was wondering the same thing reading this thread.

What is the original name for "Me"? Porkchop? Ironically it is that annoying character on Saturday Night Live. Can't think of the stupid name. Edit: Peter Anthony Coleman.

The other item people tend to ignore with these players going to AHL, if allowed, is maturity and leadership. Stats cant reveal that aspect of a player and it can still be developed in Junior.
If a player comes back and helps his team mates, even in practice and dressing room for example, that is the mature way to handle it. The AHL is not some magic formula that is going to outweigh the NHL and agents figuring a way to manipulate how this new rule works.
You just have to look at the NCAA players. They are leaving University at a time when they can decline signing with the team that drafted them and they become FA. Chicago lost 1st round Hayes(1st round gets compensation) this way but now will get some top ones to replace the high picks they dont get.
I could see CHL drafted players having their agent request being promoted to the AHL at 19 to sign. In some form the drain on the system will make the CHL watered down and a product not as appealing to watch. I think changing the rule will create more problems/abuse then it fixes.

I really don't recall Sheppard being absolutely dominant as a Q player.... i know you saw him alot more as a Caper... but I always thought he had too much hype and not that much sizzle I don't see him as a comparable to either Ehlers or Drouin as Q players to be honest He played on a deep team at 18 and had 96 points in 56 games. Drafted 9th overall. Ehlers played on a weaker team at 18 and had 101 points in 51 games. Drafted 9th overall. Not a big difference number wise considering how dominant people consider Ehlers to be. different eras I suppose 96 points in 06-07 wasnt even tops on his own team.. plus the playoff performance of 20 points in 16 games not comparable to Ehlers and Drouin at all in my opinion just looked yeah that year Sheppard wasn't even a top 10 league scorer..... there was 9 100 point scorers and Beauregard scored 70 goals Ehlers put up his numbers in a year where the top goal scorer had 54 and only 4 players reached 100 points... plus he topped it off by averaging over 2 PPG in playoffs and leading the playoff scoring race despite only playing 2 rounds not to mention he did in his 17 year old season as well and Drouin averaged better than 2 PPG in his 18 year old season... way ahead of Sheppard

I think what Sheppard lacked in high end flashy skill he made up for in his overall game and size. He put up the points, but was also a big body that could skate, grind and was tough on defenders physically. Overall he was a dominant player but I don't think he ever REALLY stood out as a guy who was just too good for this level - although given his size and production it wasn't unreasonable to expect he was ready to move on.
