Should have unloaded Dubeau , Lalonde , Haas , Halabi and maybe even Sweeney at Christmas. Even if that meant taking an offer they thought on the light side. Here we are eliminated in the first round , like expected. How nice would it have been to go into the draft with a couple of first rounders (Dubeau,Lalonde) and a couple of higher end prospects. Now I'd still want us to take a step back but our main target's values are lower. That move cost us another year or two of rebuilding imo. Unless there's a trick up Shannon's sleeve , it looks bad.

Moncton had the JR cycle working pretty good for them the last couple of times....won the cup in '06 and '10...the mistake was going for it last year, when everybody knew that nobody was beating Halifax...if they had let some of those high end assets go at Christmas last season, this playoffs right now would be a great one and next year could have been better. That's what I've been saying. It started with the last 2 seasons, setting up for a run last spring which was destined to fail instead of restocking with young players that would be here 3-4 years they got "one and done" guys for Gormley mostly. Plus Matheson who was a no-show.

It is very similar to the decision CB made when they added in 2010. Unlike CB though, you didn`t run into a powerhouse early and get eliminated. I actually think you had a very strong team on paper - just disfunctional and inconsistent.

I think the team could be good next year, but not really contender status. In order to contend they'd have to add at least one, if not two top six forwards. They would also need to add two more defencemen who can play in the top four. Those aren't exactly going to be cheap additions.
I honestly have no idea what they plan on doing next year, but if they didn't sell this season then I'm not exactly holding my breath on it happening next season. I'm not sure we'll get a real clear indication of where things are headed until next season's trade period. I just really hope things aren't lacking direction as much as it seems to be at times.
Management is certainly selling that the future is bright, and yes there are some good young players, but when you compare it to the likes of SJ, CB and Charlottetown...not so much.

It was dysfunctional to a certain extent, but on paper they had issues in nets and on defense that were pretty obvious, with no #7 d-man and a weak #6. Dubeau was up and down all year.

I am not sure on paper we had issues on D and in Goal. Narbonne (playing pro), Raccine (Florida), Melindy (Phoenix) not sure any teams this year had three pro bound defence on paper, remember you said we had issues on paper. Not sure why we would have needed a #7 D-man last year since we played only 4 going down the stretch and into the first round. Dubeau I will give you as being up and down and definitely turned it around this year.

Not sure how far ahead we could have gotten with trading Haas and Halabi. Dubeau might have been a good draw, but which team presently in the second round would have improved leaps and bounds by adding Dubeau? Lalonde on the other hand at Christmas might have brought some good pieces since he will certainly be back in the league as a 20. My issue with trading Sweeney is if we are building for 2016 then we will need a 20 or two on the point to contend. Unless the return for him this year was so great it would only cost us more or equal to get a D of his 20 yr status down the road. I just think the market was soft this year. It appears that this year we have several teams that have respected a rebuild cycle and have traded well leading into this season that our assets weren't sought after as much as we might think. Your thoughts?

Hodge in today's paper was discussing the plans for next season, interview with Shannon. It appears our next "go for it" year could be 2016-17, where Mem Cup could be in Saint John. That said, it could move up if we are able to land a couple of our impact Americans - if we can land two of Florentino (Buffalo pick - would Nolan have any influence in him coming to Moncton for 19 y/o season), MacLeod, Malatesta, Gendron, or Dorsey on defense for next year, things start to look differently. Tkachev remains the biggest wild card for next year ... Hodge also talked about returning players - he lists White, Halabi, and Haas as unlikely to return.

He or Emond should have been #5 with Sweeney as #6 and Wood as #7 or 8. They had a strong 1st pair(Racine-Narbonne) but weak 2nd and 3rd. A stronger 2nd and 3rd pair would have helped keep the #1 pair more fresh(instead of playing 30 minutes a night) for the playoffs. Dubeau was very average last year, definitely not Championship caliber goaltending.

Dorsey they could have kept him this year but would not promise him a spot, suddenly he'd be a huge addition for next year? Weird.

In the article there is talk of building fir 16-17, if that's the case they should have tried to move Dubeau and lalonde this year and move Barbashev and co in the next 8-9 months.
In order to have building blocks for a contender in 16-17, they'd have needed a strong crop from the 2013 and 2014 drafts, which is nearly impossible missing 1st rounders and having other picks missing. Not sure if they expect a contender with smoke and mirrors and late rounders miraculously turning into stars?

Maybe they feel that the market will be better for Dubeau and Lalonde next year with Quebec hosting and 2 Q teams guaranteed in the Memorial Cup. Goalies weren't a real hot commodity this year, and Lalonde comes with a 40-goal price tag now. Either way they have to move some assets somewhere.

Maybe Shannon feels he can get the same or better value next season. What other reason would he have not to trade them ? The goalie market was flooded , no doubting that one , so that might explain Dubeau but not sure what the deal was with Lalonde. Might have been a gamble , with a lot of players moving on , Lalonde will in all likelihood be one of the league's top goal scorers. Look at what Frederick Gaudreau got in return.

Most fans wanted/expected Lalonde to be traded. Only Shannon and co. know why he wasn't moved but unless he grows 10 inches in the off-season, I can't see anyway his trade value at the draft would be higher than it was at Christmas.
