"Im very happy to join the PEI Rocket and the Savard family. In a situation like this, everybody has to adjust, but the transition will be done fairly quickly. I’m a very well prepared coach and like to have my players well prepared as well, said Chouinard.
I’m a very honest coach and have always kept an open policy with my players. Players will know when things are not right, but they will also know when things are going right", added Chouinard, a former professional hockey player, who coached over 10 seasons in the league.
I am loving this Guy already. I like the idea of getting acknowledged when you are doing something right -- The same when you are not performing. Being prepared will be something new for the Rocket. I suspect we may see some line changes on Wednesday. No more lack lustre play or they will be sitting on the bench.
First Line- Morrison, Latal @ Kana Second Line - Walker, Doyle, McKinley/Locke Third Line Lachine, McKinley/Locke, Paynter
Best of luck to Yanick Jean. Looking forward to see how Guy reacts behid the bench.

and i found it funny to read that jeans proudest moment as coach was "i went to the office everyday and i worked very hard to try to make this organization better"....if that is your proudest moment...then i am very sorry for u The guy's human, and likely tried his best. It's tough to succeed in that kind of a job at such a young age. Who knows, perhaps someday with a bit more age/maturity/experience/wisdom the guy becomes a fine coach. I don't see what's so shameful about that comment at all. He's saying he put in an honest effort. Well put Deer. I was a strong proponent for a change and it is here. IMO The time for criticism of the former Coach is over. Although I disagreed strongly with many decisions I recognize his commitment to the team came with the personal sacrifices such as time away from family. I know its the nature of the job but he did it and as Mr. Savard said he was loyal to the team, as a fan I appreciate that. I hope he is successful in future endeavors and if he wishes to pursue coaching that he finds a position that allows him to continue to learn and grow.

I like what Guy is saying already as well... open door policy.. when you play bad you know it.. when you play well you know it.. a tough but fair coach who has his team well prepared for every game? bring it on as for the criticism of Yannick's quote.. it just seems he is still not able to take any sort of responsibility for the failure on the ice.. he never once accepted the blame all his time here and that quote and the story of him being so shocked just lends more credence to the fact he still doesn't see his abilities as a coach as a problem with the team he says he doesn't think a team ever fired a coach on a 5 game point streak before.. he says he knows the team turned the corner (despite by all accounts still playing lacklustre hockey) and his greatest accomplishment is going to work everyday and trying hard? anyways you're right his time is gone no need to harp about him anymore as for Wednesday here's my lines G- Gelinas D1- Clow/Gervais D2 Southy/Lessard D3 Deighan/Malouin Main can be spotted in to cover for Clow or Malouin if the game is tight and we're protecting the lead F1- McKinley/Lachaine/Gallant ..... this line should stick together and be rewarded for recent strong play with the starting assignment F2- Walker/Morrison/Kana .... get Doyle back to C.. try Kana with the big boys F3- Latal/Doyle/MacLean F4 - Paynter/CoonCome/Main ... a true energy line.. as mentioned earlier spot Main in on the blueline as well

I may be reading too much into Savard's and Chouinard's comments but the two things that I am taking from this which I am hoping we will see is:
1. Better preparation and starts in the first period. Hopefully not a continauation from that Ugly stat that I posted last week which has grown to the Rocket allowing the first goal in 12 out of 15 games.
2. Better development of some of our younger players. Specifically a better influence on Doyle, better use of Southorn and more opportunity for Clow, Malouin & MacLean.
Since it is an opportunity to rejuggle lines here is what I would like to see:
Walker-Morrison-Doyle (this line is producing why not leave it) Kana-Locke-Latal (Locke needs to play centre and IMO has the skill to produce more than CoonCome) McKinley-Lachaine-Gallant (Why break up a line that works) MacLean-CoonCome-Paynter (This line needs regular shifts)
Lessard-Southorn (Needs to start using Southorn Better) Main-Malouin (IMO Malouin deserves more ice time than the other 2 but still be an occasional scratch) Gervais-Clow/Deighan (continue to rotate all 3 17 yr old defensemen and actually play them in the 3rd period. Allow Gervais to mentor these two)
Side note: Anyone know if Schmidt is still with the team. If so could it be possible that with a new coach he gets a chance?

Scratch Maclean, Id rather have Main up front , makes the game alot more exciting to watch too lol and that way give our younger Dman more playing time give them a chance to play, and develope into a Force for next year And yes Schmidt is still a member of the Rocket but out for a couple more days

I'd forgotten about Locke .. how long is he expected out?
If Schmidt is still here and in the mix... we have too many forwards
I think next year Doyle has to be our number one centerman.. I'd rather him go back to 2nd line C for now than to play out of position on a line that despite putting up points really isn't very well balanced IMO
Doyle is a shoot first guy.. who I think is taking away from the strength of Walkers game by playing on that line... just my opinion of course I'd like to see Kana tried with Walker and Mo.. I think that has the potential to be a really good cohesive unit

Based on comments from others regarding Guy's style and that he likes a tough team does that mean Wright will see the ice to help Gallant in the scrapping dept.?
Batten down the hatches for Wednesday night!
Hockeyfan99 - I agree with those lines. No sense breaking up things that are working unless Guy sees something that could be better...which will be fine with me if he pulls it off.

Funny there has been zero mention of the coaching change on the QMJHL website.
Is it not news?
Maybe they haven't heard ;D

I agree with Bois, Jean never once came out and took responsibility for a loss or for the poor play of the team. Even when being fired he wouldn't even acknowledge that he was at least party responsible for him being let go.
One comment that really bothers me is where Savard said that Jean was gone after this season no matter what happened. I know he only made that decision after training camp, but he must have at least been thinking of it during the summer, if you don't have confidence in your coach going into the season, why start the season with a lame-duck coach? Was he prepared to let the team and the fans suffer through another whole season with someone that he thought couldn't get the job done? I know he eventually made the move, but hard to stomach the fact that Savard was willing to have us the fans go through a season like that, especially when he went to the local paper at around the same time in regards to dwindling attendance.
Don't get me wrong, I am glad that he eventually made the move because something had to be done, but why put people through a whole season like that when it was going to be inevitable anyways.

Rocket players surprised by move They’re ready to play for new head coach The Guardian
Talk about extremes.
In two days, the P.E.I. Rocket have gone from having the second youngest head coach in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League to the second oldest.
Monday, Serge Savard Jr. fired the 31-year-old Yanick Jean from his first bench boss gig for 51-year-old Guy Chouinard, a 16-year veteran now with his sixth QMJHL team.
Rocket captain Pierre-Luc Lessard and alternate captains Brett Morrison, and Benoit Gervais are cautious of what Chouinard brings to the 7-7-1 Rocket as it prepares to tonight’s game versus league-leading Cape Breton (12-3-1).
Game time is 7 p.m. at the Civic Centre.
“That was a surprise,” said Lessard very matter-of-fact of Jean’s firing. “We didn’t expect that, (but) we’re moving forward.”
“It’s going to be a change at first, but we’ll adapt,” said Morrison, who’s second in the league in scoring with 24 points. “I’ve heard pretty good things about (Chouinard). I hope he helps us a lot.”
Gervais cuts to the root of the change.
“It was a surprise, we didn’t expect that, but the objective is the same, win hockey games,” said Gervais, who is tied for fourth overall in plus-minus at plus seven. “(I’m) looking forward to practice. He said himself he’s a teacher so I guess we’ll see.”
The Rocket stumbled out of the chute this season, going 4-7-1 before a three-game winning streak and nine points in its last five game lifted the squad out of the QMJHL cellar.
Despite that, Serge Savard Jr., Rocket president and general manager, axed Jean, who leaves with a record of 68-82 in 150 games, after the team returned to P.E.I. from Cape Breton (a 6-2 Rocket victory) early Monday morning.
Savard told The Guardian Tuesday he wasn’t going to renew Jean’s contract (a three-year deal agreed to in 2005) at the end of the season regardless of the team’s results.
So the Rocket contacted Chouinard last week and signed him to three-year deal over the weekend.
Chouinard brings a boatload of coaching honours. He owns QMJHL records for wins (515), seasons (16), consecutive wins without a loss (27) and regular season championships (the Jean Rougeau Trophy for most points) with four.
He also is third in regular season losses with 406.
He also set records for most playoff series (27) and playoffs games (144). Chouinard, who scored 575 points in 575 NHL games with the Atlanta-Calgary Flames and St. Louis Blues, holds the QMJHL mark for most playoff wins (78) and is second in playoffs losses with 66.
His teams have reached the President’s Cup final four times and have failed to get out of the first round four times.
Chouinard earned a President’s Cup with the Longueuil Chevaliers (now the Victoriaville Tigres) in 1987.
Morrison doesn’t expect the tumult to affect the team’s current momentum.
“I don’t think we’re going to stop playing like we’ve been playing,” he said. “I think everything will be OK.”
Gervais agrees.
“When the game starts (today) it’s the same hockey game,” he said.
Assistant coach Corrado Micalef and goaltending coach Jamie Blanchard will remain with the Rocket.
