With the playoff packs going on sale I decided to venture over to the Coliseum website and see what the schedule looks like.
Surprise, surprise the boat show is in town during the opening weekend of the playoffs! From what I understand that absolutely takes up the ice surface.
I really see no other alternative but to start the first round series on the road. Any other year I’d say no big deal as a 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15 or 3 vs 14 series should be a breeze. Not really the case this year though. Would anyone feel very comfortable about facing teams like Cape Breton, Chicoutimi or Gatineau and having to start on the road? That has the potential to be extremely detrimental.
We’re still over a month away from playoffs, but it’s food for thought moving forward.

The Boat show is in Moncton and the National Curling Championships are in Halifax......I wonder how real Hockey Towns schedule their rink's availability?...lol

Can they build that new rink by next week? 10000 seat arena but reserve 5000 for Conor Garland’s selfishness.

The Boat show is in Moncton and the National Curling Championships are in Halifax......I wonder how real Hockey Towns schedule their rink's availability?...lol Well ... it certainly is frustrating ... but many of those "real hockey towns" would love to have all of the events and revenue that comes with keeping your building utilized with a wide variety of entertainment and trade shows. I think you'll find that many of those other rinks sit empty for about 97% of the non-hockey dates ... other than ice-rentals by the hour I mean. It isn't cheap to run a large venue like the Metro Center (it will never be Scotiabank center to me) or the Coliseum ... and these non-hockey events go a long way to paying the bills, so the money doesn't come out of my pocket.

I have seen a few instances of starting a series sooner or later. The season ends on March 21st(Saturday), could they not play Wednesday-Thursday? The Show starts at noon on the 27th and finishes at 5pm on the 29th. If the Cats played the 26th, they would have basically 12 hours to get the Coliseum ready, seems doable. Leaves the agrena free to be set up on the Thursday. www.masterpromotions.ca/Previous-Events/nb-sportsmen-show-2015/

I know for a lot of trade shows in Saint John, the ice has to come out - is it the same in Moncton?

I know for a lot of trade shows in Saint John, the ice has to come out - is it the same in Moncton? Not always ... they just lay heavy rubber mats down to cover the ice. The ice needs a good scraping after that and then a few floods. I think it depends on the time of year.

I think the owner is the only one that should really be concerned, because weekday sales won't be as good as weekend sales. Otherwise it's not like the Wildcats are giving up home ice advantage. They're just switching the order up. Not that I agree with everything Don Cherry says, but he's often said the higher seed should get to start on the road but still get 4 of 7 home games. He seems to think that is more favourable for the higher seed. I personally don't think it's much of an advantage or disadvantage either way.
