With not a lot to talk about until Saturday, now might be a good time to discuss what may lay on the horizon with the trade period fast approaching. I haven't figured out whether the Rocket will be buyers, or be sellers as of yet. I'm leaning toward sellers, simply because with all the changes in the front office and behind the bench, this is prime oppurtunity for PEI to build a winner for the next few years with Chouinards blueprint. Also with a good crop of young players to build around. (Doyle, Southorn, McLean, McKinley, and others). As it stands right now, I think our best chip is Lessard. There are alot of teams looking to improve their D this period, and it's safe to say he would be AT LEAST top 4 on any team. Tie that in with the fact there is seemingly a shortage of AVAILABLE solid vetern defensmen, and there might be a team willing to pay a decent price for Pierre-Luc. (Who ever loses the Drew Paris sweepstakes ) It also goes with out saying that Morrison and Walker would fetch hefty returns in most trade periods, but there seems like there is less demand for forwards, as well as the fact that most contenders have their 20's set at this point. Not to say they're not viable options, I just don't think we would get the value we would have in September. (However, no one thought we would be in this situation.) If we were to buy, we would be in the same boat as alot of teams, as I believe our biggest need is expierienced defense. A move to improve secondary scoring would also be a must if we were to want to make a SERIOUS run. So, what do you folks think, I love the fictional offers that out of town posters tender, always interesting to see how other fans value different players.

I agree.. I said all along if we are selling (and I believe we probably should) we have to deal Lessard as he is the most valuable chip we have (he also is playing MUCH MUCH better recently) being 19, NHL drafted (but not signed), and capable of playing both specialty teams .... I actually think Paris might be a tad overrated.. Lessard is just as good IMO and put on a contending team with some more depth I think he would shine as a #2-3 guy..
I think LaFleur could also be a valuable trade chip if he can get his game together as goaltending leaguewide is in doubt this year.. with guys like Sniderman being acquired by a contending team that speaks volumes to me.... Lewiston obviously hold the cards on the goalie market having Bernier and Delmas available.. but I think a team that could make a lateral tending move or a slight upgrade by acquiring a 19 y/o like LaFleur (or Bernier) and also open a 20 slot at the same time (ie. Gatineau could drop Mior, Quebec could drop Desfosses, Halifax could drop Pelletier, or Rouyn could drop Sniderman) would be wise to do so
Perhaps a package of LaFleur alongwith Morrison would bring in a huge return.. you can't tell me Rouyn wouldn't be greatly improved by that type of acquisition... or the Remps perhaps if Roy decides to roll the dice and go for a deep run a year earlier than expected
I think Walker should be kept... for leadership and to not totally give up on any success this year
I also think one of the 17 year old d has to be moved.. terrible lack of foresight having 4 17's on the blueline in a supposed "semi-run" year

If I understand correctly, the trading period this season is fron December 17 until Jan 08. Can anyone confirm that? The Admin Rules provide: 2.14.2 Trading Period The League declares that there will be three trading periods during the season. The first is held at the annual draft. The second in August and the third is held after the last game scheduled during mid-season until January 8th at noon. No trading shall be made outside these three periods, except for 20 year old players and the European players who may be traded at all times until January 8th at noon. The last scheduled Game in mid season is on December 16, at 18:00. I'm not sure if they interpret the rule to open trading the day after or after the last game. In theory trading could begin on the night of the 16th after the last game is concluded. Practically I have no idea how the rule applied.

When in doubt about interpretating an administrative rule or a law, just read the words, as a lawyer once told me. The words say "after the last game scheduled", so that's what it means; if they wanted it to mean "the day after the last game is scheduled, then they would have said that". My feeling is that Rocket management have not yet decided if they're going to be predominantly buyers or sellers at Christmas. Now the team embarks on a series of 7 games in 16 nights, and 6 of those games are at home.....7 games against 7 different teams, including powerhouses Halifax and Cape Breton. Great opportunity for the coach and management to assess the team and make a decision about the team's make-up in the future, both short-term and long-term. Expect some major decisions to be made the week of December 10th, with trades to follow.

Cape Breton is NOT a powerhouse

Cape Breton is NOT a powerhouse Nonsense. Being contrary for the fun of it, I suspect. Cape Breton is ranked #2 in the country, Baie-Comeau is #6, Halifax is #10. Good enough for me. Besides, that isn't what we were talking about, not at all.

Except that they've lost 6 of their last 7, including losing 3 games in Quebec last weekend by a combined score of 16-1. They're not as good as their hot start or their position in the CHL rankings indicates.
But yeah, you're right. Off topic.

My only point was that we'll know a lot more about this Rocket team's prospects after this extended current home stand. ....and so will the coach...

I agree with you there.
I still think that Chouinard starting over and building his own team for the next couple of seasons is the best idea though. We're not going to contend this season even if we do add a couple of really good players, IMO.
Either way I think we have to either go for broke or build for the next couple of years. If it's another trading period with no obvious vision then all the changes in management made no difference.

Besides, that isn't what we were talking about, not at all. No I am not being contrary for the fun of it .. it bugs me when people look at stats and rankings and determine who the so called powerhouses are.. in year two the PEI Rocket were the number one ranked team in October.... we ended up missing the playoffs altogether (and we all know how hard that is right?) .. look at the roster and the ages and you will see CB is not a powerhouse.... and it is part of what we're talking about here since you originally brought it up Chouinard better not make his decisions based on a sample of 6 home games in November-December on whether we should sell or buy... that decision has to be made already.. and I suspect strongly it is

Hopefully the decision has been made or at least have an idea what the plan is for the upcoming trading period because if not, the Rocket could miss out on some quality players. Just because the trade period starts at around Dec 18, it doesn't mean that deals aren't worked out ahead of time.
I think the Rocket should look at building for next season or the season after and not be building for this season. If the Rocket were playing good and were only a player or two away from making a run this year, I would say go for it and be buyers. But the way they have been playing this year, it's going to take more than adding skilled players because this team hasn't played on the same page all year. Adding players is not going to fix that problem and all of a sudden make them a contending team, they have too far to go for that consideration.

Who does Rouyn have in terms of prospects?

Not sure of outside of their current roster in terms of prospects and picks but they have a few players a rebuilding team would certainly be interested in
18 year old winger Pierre Luc Giguere (26 Gp 5-9-14)and 16 year old center Alex Emond (26 gp 2-4-6) are the two I'd be most interested in
if we wanna take a chance on a "midget" we could also target pint sized 17 year old center Gabriel Levesque (22gp 1-5-6)
