Terrible officiating. 5 minutes for being the aggressor? They make up penalties now-a-days.

I thought that was a good game to watch and I think alot of people did too because not many people were leaving after the 50/50 per usual. The one thing that I felt took away from the game was the penalties, as soon as there was a good flow to the game it seemed like a penalty would be called. Some penalties were deserved and there was also some stuff let go, but there was also some that made you wonder what game the refs were watching. But all in all it was an entertaining game to watch.
Something that the Rocket need to get better at is improving leads. The first 3 games after the Xmas break they blew leads in the 3rd period after going into the period with a lead. They almost did it again last night, but thanks to a 2-goal cushion they held on, but the feeling was there that if the game was a few minutes longer it could have been a different result. I think the biggest reason is they go into a defensive mode where they are standing still alot in the neutral zone. I realize that this likely a system that Chouinard is getting them to use, probably for the playoffs, but they are going to have to get alot better at it before the playoffs arrive if they want to make it to what the some people from the Rocket consider the promise land, a trip to the second round.

Sec 54(b) of the Q rule book: "When a player is clearly the aggressor and he continues his fisticuffs against an opponent who is not retaliating or is defending himself, the referee shall assess to the aggressor a major penalty for fighting and a game misconduct". Good call.

I had no problem with the 5 minutes and the game misconduct for being the aggressor as Malouin did go after him and had the gloves off throwing punches while the other player still had his gloves on and didn't throw a punch. What I don't understand is the 2 minutes for roughing, not sure what happened there to warrant that.

The initial hit by Malouin was the roughing.
The persistent attempt to initiate a fight is the Major/Game misconduct.
Total damage = 7 minutes - the price of to pay for a dumb move.
