Here we are just one month away from the draft.
Unless something drastic happens, Moncton won't be drafting until the 1st pick of the 3rd round (39th overall). They will another pick in the 3rd (55th overall).
We're losing 5 out of our top 6 forwards. Correct me if I'm wrong. With that being said, you have to think organizational need will be at forward.
Do the Wildcats pick best player available OR go towards organizational need?

Do the Wildcats pick best player available OR go towards organizational need? I think you still go BPA. It could be a bit lean going forward but, I wouldn't worry too much about forward depth, teams like Bathurst and Halifax, even Charlottetown will probably have veteran players pushed out of the lineup by rookies, who could be brought in on the cheap to fill roster spots, plus I'd like to see Gavin Watt get a shot as well. I don't know if any picks are going back to Moncton in that McIsaac/Groulx deal... that's so up in the air it's hard to tell until the trades open.

All things being equal, the Cats will likely draft more forwards than d-men early on. however, if there is a player that is the clear cut best player at their pick, they should take him regardless of position. They are starting a 3-4 year rebuild and need talent wherever they can find it. In terms of D, they will have a big need at midseason at the trade period if/when Spence and Stewart are possibly moved or for the 2021-22 season. goaltending they don't have a true, clear cut goalie of the future. They really like the kid in NS but he is far from a sure thing.

Article in paper this morning quotes Irving as being very upset at league's decision not to compensate teams who traded to contend in 2019-20 and lost out on the playoff run ... I can see why he would be disappointed, but not surprised the league isn't compensating him - one of those things that isn't anyone's fault.
The bigger pain on the long term will come if this season ends up cancelled and we can't convert our remaining vets into picks and prospects. Would make for a very long rebuild.

When we first discussed the idea of changing those trades I was opposed. But they are now talking about Compensatory picks instead and that could be a viable option, even though they have said no to that idea as well.

Even that lessens the value of other teams picks, punishing 13 to help 5. If this season got wiped OTOH, the league would have to do something imo.

I could see a few Moncton and SJ trades happening where SJ moves kids who don't necessarily have a spot for future picks.

Well they do that when they give out compensatory picks for drafting a kid that doesn't show up. Teams take the risk, thinking they can change a kids mind. But then they give up on him and take a pick instead, disadvantaging everybody else because they took the risk. Its the same logic. I agree on your last comment though. If we can't have a 20/21 season (very possible) then how do they run the next draft ? It can't be based on this past season's standings again. An 18 team lottery perhaps ?

I can see both sides of the argument. I don't think compensation picks would have been bad for anybody, rebuilding teams still have their assets from trading away stars. The discussion where it gets hard is, where do you put them and how many teams get them. My proposal would be for the top 6 teams in the standings(points per games played) and the top team gets a 1st and 3rd, 2nd gets a 1st, 3rd gets a 2nd and 3rd, 4th gets a 2nd, 5th and 6th get a 3rd. All picks at the end of the round. That's 8 picks added.

Drover is a kid that would benefit from going to a rebuilding team, he seems stuck in SJ. With the Wc not having a lot of picks though it's a tough trade to make. Maybe make him futures for a guy like Stewart, then you send Stewart at mid season for a 2nd. Stewart is a guy that would help stabilize the SJ D.

A lottery is unfair to Moncton (because you would likely have finished very low) and SJ (because our pick should be late). I really think they would have to make an adjustment like Irving suggested because while the 1 year problem partially resolved when you sell, 2 cripples your franchise.

Orr is another kid that should be available and could step into a top 6. SJ is not hurting for picks, so there's no reason that it couldn't involve picks in a couple of years

Can you imagine how hard it would be to scout for a 2021 draft if the season was wiped out (I mean Midget AAA season specifically - Quebec is talking about it ...)? You would be relying on what kids looked like in bantam this year to make your picks ... trying to figure out who grew and how much, and how their skills otherwise evolved. It would be quite the crapshoot - might not matter much what order the teams picked in ...

One way to do it is to have some kind of tournament style showcase in Montreal and Moncton for Quebec and Maritime kids a week or two before the draft. We are looking pretty far out for that.
