There was a piece on CTV news last night that Bill Riley's retired number 7 was never transferred to the Avenir Centre. They failed to mention that the Number 11 of Oscar Gaudet and the number 9 (I think it was 9) of Phil Doiron were also not transferred, nor were the AHL and Senior Hockey Championship banners.
Clearly to me they were trying to make the story about race (focusing on Riley), but it is clearly not about race.
The Wildcats took their own banners with them to the Avenir Centre, but left the rest. Why? Because they don't own those banners ... they don't get a say on where they hang.
Personally I think all of the banners should hang in the Avenir Centre, but they could also just stay at the Coliseum. Or, they could be transferred to the Sports Wall of Fame (in the Avenir Centre). But they should not be disposed of, as Riley's number banner was found at a yard sale.
I would think it is the City's job to find a proper place for them. If Ian Fowler was still with us, this would have been dealt with properly.

If I was the Wildcats, I would make sure it gets handled though because weather deserved or not, they are involved.

Agree with all that you both said - it is not a racial thing, as none of the banners were brought over except for Wildcats ones. It is probably up to the City to deal with - but I can see how it got missed - it wasn't the City that honoured Riley, Gaudet, or Doiron - they were honoured by franchises that are long defunct. Should likely fall under the Wall of Fame committee's mandate to come up with a plan ...

Yeah the fact race was even discussed really turned me off the whole thing as the issue had absolutely nothing to do with anyones skin color. It was more the politics of who does own/take responsibility for that banner.
Considering it was hanging for like 30+ years and is from an era that really hasn't existed in 20+ years in the region the only shocking part to me was how it was disposed of...which had nothing to do with the individual it was meant to honor in any way and was more tied to the fact that the teams he played on no longer even exist and nobody really knew what to do with it.

It was mentioned in the piece that the Cats had a big yard sale when they moved and the banners were sold in that yard sale. So although they certainly have no obligation to any sort of history that is not their own franchise, someone gave the Cats permission to get rid of them. I would imagine the cities plan were probably to convert them to digital tributes in the Wall of Fame exhibit in the Avenir lobby. Not sure if that's been done or not.

Riley was the first head coach of the Wildcats, and was also head Coach for Robert Irving when he was the major sponsor of the Moncton Midland Hawks (Jr A). He deserves better. I'm guessing that RKI knew nothing about this happening, because he wouldn't have let it happen.

That’s the way people of Moncton think about our history

A new report on this story from yesterday has a City representative obtaining the banner and it will be installed in the Avenir Centre. No word if the other banners are also available.
