Wow - Big News out of Saint John.
It will be interesting to see how it works out - but for me as a fan - the tournament just became even more interesting than it already was.
Hiring Gardiner MacDougall for a Memorial Cup run is big news.

Am I hearing this right?
Gardiner MacDougall who has coached the UNB Reds for 20+ years is now the head coach for the Saint John Sea Dogs? Is this temporary?
And I'm also hearing Dominique Ducharme was hired as a Consultant for the team.

Edit - Actually they are saying he's the interim head coach.

MacDougall is being loaned by UNB and is only going to be the temporary coach for a month according to Stephane Leroux

UNB likely cool with it as a recruiting opportunity.

Unsure how to feel on this. I was away during the playoff games, so I wasn't able to see how the team played with my own eyes. I will say Dwyer was much better than Cowan at coaching. Dwyer seems like a great guy (going off his speech at the team awards night). Being new to Saint John since 2019 I've not experienced anything other than Trevor Georgie as the manager, so I don't feel I can comment just yet if he's good or not. What I do know from chatting to him TG is that he is very passionate about the team and the city. He definitely built a great 2nd half team (playoff exit aside) and had Halifax not vetoed the trade, we'd have had Desnoyers too. Bring on the memorial cup!

Not sure if intended or not, but the wording at the end sort of implies that we'd have all the same players plus Desnoyers. If the Desnoyers trade happens then at least one of the other moves doesn't happen. We most likely don't get D'Aoust since some of the assets in that trade were rumored to be part of the Desnoyers trade. Hard to say what would have happened with the goalie and 20 situation if we didn't trade for D'Aoust. Good chance we don't get Couture.

Question is.......who do they look for once the Memorial Cup is over.
Inside position or do they look outside the organization?

Hopefully MacDougall can get 100 percent out of our star players because Dwyer couldn't.

There seems to be a lot of coaching turnover with the SeaDogs (not unlike the Halifax Mooseheads, whose coaches mostly leave for better opportunities and/or for family reasons; JJ Daigneault being an exception). What goes on there? Not a sign of a well run organization to have that much coaching turnover.

Nowadays, typical practice in the NHL is that a GM gets the chance to hire two coaches during his employment term. A GM can hire the coach he wants, and then fire him and hire someone new. But, if the GM has to knock on the owner's door to fire the second coach, typically the GM and everybody else gets a pink slip.
Georgie came into SJ midway through the 2015-16 season. Darrell Young was GM and Danny Flynn was head coach. Initially Georgie came in as president and seemed to be more in charge of business operations and had less to do with hockey operations.
By the fall of 2016, Young was out and Georgie was GM, with Flynn still the head coach. At the time, a lot of people felt that Flynn was doing a lot of the GM legwork related to player transactions, given his experience in hockey as both a coach and a GM. Saint John had a very good team that year and lost to Erie in the Memorial Cup semi-final.
In 2017, Flynn had moved on and Josh Dixon was the first coach that Georgie hired in his time in Saint John. After two season with Dixon, Jeff Cowan was brought in as head coach for the 2019-20 season. Cowan only lasted one season and Greg Gilbert became coach for the 20-21 season. Finally, after one season of Gilbert, Gordie Dwyer was hired to coach the Sea Dogs beginning in the summer of 2021 and we know his time ended just a couple of days ago.
I think anything short of a Memorial Cup victory, McCain has to clean house and show Georgie the door. This many coaching changes in the short term is nothing short of chaotic and we've seen NHL teams try to operate in this manner and have very little success.
Furthermore, I think SJ is going to have a tough time attracting the kind of candidate they want to coach this team post-Memorial Cup. Given how things have gone of late, I can see normally strong candidates thinking twice about joining the organization. It has to be concerning that the Sea Dogs see Gardiner MacDougall as their "ace in the hole". If they pulled this stunt once, who's to say they wouldn't entertain doing it again. The thing about MacDougall is that while he may have no interest in the job full time, his regular job always reaches the end of their hockey season mid-March, so he can be reached quickly if need be. Any new coach could really just be a placeholder until the University season is over.
To me, this is a big mess.

McCain won't have the power to clean house since he will be selling the Seadogs to the Georgie Family. That info is from two sources.

Interesting - I sort of figured that Georgie's time in SJ would be coming to an end after the Mem Cup and him looking to move up into the pro ranks. His family must have some money if they are looking to buy the team ... what is their background?
