3 STARS:
1. Xavier Simoneau - He was noticeable on every shift - always full-out. He plays a physical - hard driving style but has learned to cut out the needless penalties for the most part. When you can bring grit and stay out of the box - it's a two-edged sword. He brings a lot to the team. He must be very well liked by his teammates because when he scores a goal - they always treat him like it was an OT winner.
2. Franky Lapenna - Watching the game - the scoreboard distorted the big picture. The Islanders were outshot 35-27, but Lapenna's net presence was incredible.
3. Drew Elliott - Hits, faceoffs, played big minutes, 1-1-2, scored the game winner - and the 3rd goal early in the 1st period was a backbreaker for the Phenix and chased their starting goalie. He's having a really good playoffs and is very likely setting a few unofficial Islanders' records for hits in a playoff game, playoff series and playoff season. He also shows a lot of discipline given his physical style and stays out of the box for the most part.
GAME RATING: *** Five stars if you're an Islanders fan - but no playoff intensity after it was 5-0.
REFEREE RATING: ***** Maillet and Mills - Great job. Both teams went 0/4 on the PP.
ATTENDANCE RATING: **** 2403 Let's call anything over 3,000 for a Q playoff game worthy of 5 stars - and anything less - disappointing. These are elite teams in the final four.
BROADCAST RATING: ***** Eastlink - they were excellent with Beardsley, Lalonde and Mavs. Watching the game highlights later on - the guys on the CHL TV broadcast seemed extra good as well. They (Matthews and Arsenault) are probably the best broadcast duo in the league game in and game out.
Bottom Line: I think the final score was deceiving. The Phenix got off to the worst start imaginable and had their starting goalie chased.
They turned it around and won the second half of the game 2-1 (from a Phenix perspective - I know you don't win half-games).I'm half expecting a complete turnaround in Game 2 - and more of a defensive battle.
Huge win for the Islanders - and what a way to set the tone. If that doesn't drive up attendance for tonight - might as well just open the doors and let people in for free until the seats are all gone. The players deserve a full house.
