5 in a row, with Minnesato tomorrow night although were out of the playoffs. Let's do an entire season of this so we can make the playoffs it's been 7 years since we made the playoffs. They go on winning streaks when the season is lost and they're just getting less value for that 1st rounder that has to bring in a veteran in order to try and save the rebuild. Detroit has passed them and Montreal isn't far off. Buffalo is still a mess. But its really hard to see who Ottawa leaps ahead of next year to show any major improvement.

Detroit is in a weird place, older team that is stuck in the middle, either sneak into the playoffs or get a mid 1st rounder. Ottawa needs to shuffle some bodies, too many one way players who seem to be there for stats only.

Switch those 2 things and you can switch Ottawa and Detroit in the standings.

Ottawa added Korpisalo and Tarasenko but it didn't work out ......there is something not right Chemistry Wise with that Youthful Group . I think shitty coaching and a loser culture is the big culprit, and it is hard to shake. Need to bring in someone who is a proven winner as a coach, who prepares for every game not hoping to win, but fully expecting to. A few depth guys who play that way would also help - but it is tough to find - some guys that have won before are content as they age to cash some pay cheques ... while others are determined to win again ... can be tricky to tell who is who.

They hit the jackpot with Giroux but haven't see Stutzle and Sanderson hit the heights they expected when they were both drafted. They also play in a division that is tough as hell. And in a market that unless guys are from there they usually don't want to stay there. But 4 original 6 and 2 florida teams to compete with for playoffs is a really tough draw unless any of those are also in prolonged rebuilds.

I mean Stutzle had 90 plus points last year.... Sanderson is in his second full season of NHL hockey
let's not toss away the youth as not hitting their heights just yet
also every year some team that noone thinks will be a playoff team winds up being one...... there's no reason that can't be Ottawa next year
but yes some changes are necessary

I agree on Giroux but Stutzle and Sanderson are the least of their worries ... Stutzle on a down year is almost PPG and Sanderson plays like a 10 year vet out there, those contracts are going to be great. The real worry was the goaltending and team defense for most of the year. I'd love to see what the outlook of the team would be if they didnt go 0-5 on back-to-back Western road trips (and possibly be in the wildcard race) but almost glad they did so they shake something up.

Stutzle went from almost 40 goals and 90+ points to 20 goals and 70ish points. Ottawa had high hopes that these guys would be superstars. They're both still trying to find that consistency which played a huge part in their disappointing season. Don't think they need to move them. Just the opposite. But they need better leaders. The Debrincat's and Tarasenko's were not great fits. This years pick should get them something good in a deal.

Matthews went from 60 goals to 40
shit happens one season to the next
and Sanderson matched his point totals and improved everything else stats wise from his rookie year so it's pretty laughable you mentioned him
Ottawa gets solid goaltending they are in the mix IMO

Stutzle will have a spotlight on him to take it back to last years pace and be a leader next season. Its just hard to make progress in that division where the top 4 teams will still mostly return the same core's which contain legit NHL superstars in their primes.

The difference is Toronto still did well when Matthews went from 60 to 40. Nobody is shitting on these guys for regressing. Or saying that they won't have great seasons next year. Saying the expectations were and still are sky high. Higher then either guy has hit this season. Stutzle was there last year and regressed. Sanderson is still trying to find that consistency every single night. If this is Sanderson's best NHL season ever they're not going to be happy in Ottawa. If Stutzle doesn't bounce back to 40 goal/90 point territory they're also not going to be happy with where he is.

This is just the start there I think . They have so much Young Talent that I think they have to move a couple of pieces out and bring in a Vet or two . I am sure that was Jacques Martin's mandate to sort that out and come up with some recommendations . I thought Craig Berube might be a good choice for a young squad who might need a Tough Guy Type but I hope it works out .
