Just wanted to stir up a little discussion and get some opinions but what if they Titan waited to go all-in this year, compared to last? While I enjoyed watching the talent of last years squad it still makes you wonder what could have been.
I always thought going all-in last year was risky anyways considering SJ's rebuild started a year before ours and their core was a year older in development
the first thing that comes to mind is how weak the Maritimes division is this year compared to last. Only having to compete with Halifax where as last year having to deal with SJ, and Charlottetown.
Not acquiring Lapierre, Tourigny, Lafrance, Belgarde means we would've had picks/players for this year.
Trade a guy like MacArthur last year for a good haul.
We would not have had to give up Biggar and Gaudet as futures.
Huckins situation was unfortunate overall but even moving on from him I think we would've been still strong.
our team arguably could've looked something like this:
Samenas - Kidney - Melanson Henneberry - Allison - Maclean Ryan - Andrews - Lallier Godin - Collette - Forster
Gaudet - Larkin Biggar - Higgins Clements - Maddigan Pitt
Bednar Litvinov
assuming the CB trade never happened cause we wouldn't have Belgarde so no Perron or Edwards.
now this team doesn't look much different than the current team, but Biggar and Gaudet make a big difference on the back end, and we move MacArthur for value, have the extra picks to go out and acquire some top forwards this year. I think we would've been better lined up to deal with Halifax.
of course hindsight is always 20/20 but it's interesting to think about it.

I think that team looks considerably worse than the team you had last year. Defence is somewhere around the same - Tourigny would be gone but growth would help make up for that.
That forward group isn't contending. No depth after a good first line. It's basically this years group minus Edwards.
However, obviously the lineup would look way different from that if it was your go for it year this year. You'd have had higher picks in all drafts, so Samenas and Lallier are likely other players. Godin probably doesn't come in as an Ontario FA on a contending team. You'd have the return from whatever you got from moving McArthur, and you'd have had a 1st and a 2nd in the draft competing for places. You also probably don't move Huckins.
Long story short - chaos theory and the team would look completely different, heh.
It is interesting to think about though. Looking back on it you paid a lot to become a contender last year. I can see the appeal of building around Kidney and Melanson in their 19yo seasons in a weaker division instead.

If we had kept Huckins and had him Kidney and Melanson, Gaudet and Bigger we could have picked up a few other strong 19 years old's for MacArthur and others we could have made a run this year which was the logical year to do it given how weak the Maritimes group is. The 03 year draft was strong over all for Bathurst besides the 19th pick, (forget his name) but it was also a huge increase from the 02 year draft which honestly was a disaster for the Titan and scouts should have lost their jobs over it....
Issue is now where do we go? After Xmas wins will be few and far between, and fans support will drop. The rebuild will begin and we don't have any "stars" on the horizon just a hard working group. Unless they get a big haul for Kidney and Melanson, the team will be bad for years to come...

The 19th pick was Tristan Roy who's on Drummondville now, he's nothing amazing but we did get a 2nd round pick back for him. Agreed the 02 year draft was absolutely brutal.... I fully expect 4-5 assets for Melanson and Kidney each. getting at least 3 1st rounders for the same draft will be key imo. The only thing is with us not having our own 2023 1st rounder the losses will be much worst considering we won't have a potential top 5 pick to look forward to. It's weird because this year is technically year 0 of a rebuild? I don't expect us to be much better next year either...Gonna be a rough couple of seasons assuming the team stays.

Depends on how you sell. Trading guys that will be gone next year for 2006 kids that will be 17 next year versus 2023 and 2024 picks accelerates the rebuild and helps you compete better next year. Some of that depends on who you are trading with and what they have to trade...

Some of that depends on who you are trading with and what they have to trade... yeah that's very true. I can see the team doing a combination of picks/prospects/and futures. trading with Gatineau and getting picks + a future like Savoie or someone would be enticing.
