Some head-to-head stats: www.leaguestat.com/lhjmq/lhjmq/en/media/index.php?step=4&sub=14&season_id=202&format=HTML&team=3&second_team=5Halifax's power play was a combined 12-for-22 in their last four games, but 0-for-3 in the Cape Breton game. In a series that could have a lot of animosity, the key is to let the Eagles get pissed off and perhaps take the odd bad roughing penalty or two. The key is also to not get pissed off if you're Halifax, and take too many penalties yourselves, allowing Ivan and company to be at their best. Halifax took the least amount of minor penalties in the league and took 102 less than Cape Breton, so they have the ability to limit opposition power plays. That should help them against Cape Breton and also farther along should they advance.

Halifax also very dangerous when short handed. How many SH by Alex Doucet alone?
I expect penalties will drop in playoffs as usually do. If games are close it's drilled into players to stay disciplined. If score gets out of hand the penalties will come back.
This is a good warmup series for Halifax in practice turning the other cheek. One of better teams at getting under their skin.

The 1v8 format makes predicting the 2nd round opponent much easier. If Moncton wins their series, Halifax plays Moncton. If Baie-Comeau wins, Halifax plays Rimouski/Chicoutimi.
Halifax played Moncton in 2019. They last played Rimouski in 2012. They haven't played Chicoutimi since they were one win away from a Memorial Cup berth in 1997. Other than Sherbrooke who they've never played, Chicoutimi is the franchise they haven't played a best of seven series against in the most amount of time.
Time since the Moose have played each team in a best of seven:
Sherbrooke - Never Chicoutimi - 1997 Bathurst - 2003 (played a best of five against them last year... pretty much the same) Victoriaville - 2008 Blainville/Montreal - 2011 Rimouski - 2012 Saint John - 2013 Gatineau - 2014 Val-d'Or - 2014 Shawinigan - 2015 Baie-Comeau - 2018 Charlottetown - 2018 Quebec - 2019 Moncton - 2019 Drummondville - 2019 Rouyn-Noranda - 2019 Cape Breton - 2023

From a minimizing travel perspective Moncton is the obvious preference of opponent for the next round, but I wonder if Rimouski isn't the better matchup for us.
Things could be lining up for a first ever series against Sherbrooke if both teams can take care of business in round 2.

Don't think I'd add anything new by summarizing the play from our top players this series in a sweep, so I'll single out two players in particular who I think more than held their own:
1) Owen Phillips. Such an impressive showing for a 16 year old defenceman in his first playoff series. Played regular shifts and didn't need to be sheltered. Doesn't panic under pressure and skates his way out of trouble with the ease of a veteran. Showed a +3 for the series on the stat sheet and I can't remember any major blunders that had me panicked. His ice time might diminish throughout the playoffs as the competition gets tougher and Whynot comes back, but he's got a hell of a future in the Q.
2) Braeden MacPhee. The little ball of energy looks built for playoff hockey and did a great job anchoring/stabilizing the third line. Shouldn't go unnoticed how many scrums he got into without taking multiple penalties. Took a few big hits but popped back up and didn't retaliate. Needs to pot some of his big chances that he creates for himself but otherwise a great series from him.
On the flip side, thought Cataford and Moravec struggled a little throughout, the former being a little too content to play on the perimeter and the latter being a little nervy with the puck on retrievals and breakouts. Hope they can revert to their normal form in round 2.
