No Q players selected in the first round of the draft for the first time since 2008, which is not super surprising when you look at the talent available, but it is surprising to still see the headline. First OHL player was only selected at 18 as well. Good year for the dub.

Michkov is going to be a steal down the road.
Also I'm a bit surprised there were ZERO trades on the draft floor yesterday... I know a lot of the big trades already happened the past few days but still.

I know a lot of the big trades already happened the past few days but still. The deep draft combined with the flat cap meant nobody wanting to take on salary and teams wanting overpays to give up their draft slot. Made for 1 boring draft. And exposed some bad managing as well. Some teams probably should have dropped down vs picking who they did where they did but thats always the hindsight coming out of these things.

Especially a draft this deep it would've been nice to see some teams try to climb/drop back, or even gain more 1st rounders. Guys like Debrincat, Scheifele, etc. all could've had potential to move during this time but nope.

overall, pretty boring draft with next to no trades...
draft was cool in the sense of unpredictability and how deep it is so some guys went higher, some went lower.
Wondering if we see a very busy trade weekend for free agency.

Has there been a more boring lead up to free agency than this year? Feels like nothing is happening. No top FA's to excite any fan base tomorrow.
And feels like most of the league is in a holding pattern just trying to get through the flat cap phase.

Like sure we seen a couple of decent trades but none on day 1 of draft day was brutal, and the FA class this year is pretty weak, so I'm realllyyy hoping we see some big trades tomorrow.

And feels like most of the league is in a holding pattern just trying to get through the flat cap phase. Yeah, the top FA's are all 2nd line wingers or 2nd pair D on good teams. The guys with a 1st line track record are past their prime(Bergeron Kane Tarasenko etc). www.google.com/amp/s/www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/nhls-top-12-ufas-of-2023-latest-rumours-reports/sn-amp/I expect some big trades in the next couple of weeks, especially Calgary and Winnipeg. I don't think they will want to start the year with multiple 2024 UFA's not wanting to sign, sounds like Nylander will be moved as they have a big gap in asking and offering numbers.

As expected...
Darren Dreger @darrendreger ยท 16m The Winnipeg Jets are processing Blake Wheelers buyout. He will be on waivers today. There will be a number of teams with interest in signing the veteran as a free agent, including the Dallas Stars.
So he goes from 1 year and 5.25M left to a dead cap hit of 2.75M the next two years.

Duchene buyout is a surprise...Only 9.33M over 6 years versus 24M over 3. He had a year removed from an 86 point season. Should attract a lot of interest. Eight buyouts this year in total: 1. OEL (VAN) 2. Nemeth (ARI) 3. Kassian (ARI) 4. Bailey (CHI) 5. Reilly (BOS) 6. Yamamoto (DET) 7. Duchene (NSH) 8. Wheeler (WPG) Teams also have until 5pm to buyout players with a NMC capfriendly.com/buyout-history
