Tough news as he just announced his retirement in instagram was a big big fan of the kid but life is bigger than hockey. Hope he recovers from his concussions and has a good life post hockey!

Oh man, that is a scary post to read. I'm glad they were able to find it and hopefully he will continue to heal.
Hockey has always been risky, but it seems lately we are seeing how bad it really can be. CTE, concussions, and Adam Johnson's death have really shook me and I think a lot of other people.

Wishing him the best of luck, for sure. Definitely a lot to deal with at such a young age, especially the word dementia. He was a kid that played with his heart and soul every time he was on the ice and I appreciated that! <3

Glad they caught this before it got to anything.
His final hockey play will be one where he stepped up for a teammate who got hit, and fought. Sums up his career. What a warrior!

Tough to see, but this is exactly why this stuff is going by the wayside. Fighting isn't the entertaining sideshow it once was with kids like this having to give up their life's work at 19 from it. People will always have a soft spot for seeing fighting in the game, hell even I do, however it is completely selfish and with zero regard for the lives at stake on the ice for our entertainment.

I feel for the kid. As someone who has dealt with a family member with early dementia, I know first hand that's not something you want to mess with. I hope he's able to make a full recovery and live a happy, healthy life outside of the sport.
He was an imposing presence on the blueline and he'll be missed by his coach and teammates, no doubt... but this is one of those instances where there are more important things in this world than hockey.

tough news for sure but echo what others say life much more important than hockey.... and anyone who has seen someone they love go thru the stages of dementia understands it is something you wouldn't wish on anybody

really sad to hear about Hinkley....liked him in Bathurst, the way he played was exciting but hurts to see that was a big cause of his career ending as well...wish him the best in the future.

That's awful news but very mature of him to come to that conclusion.
Hopefully there will be no long lasting effects like CTE or dementia, and he continues to recover from that.

Hinkley is the first guy I can remember from our program to lose his career to injury (at least in recent memory).... but there are numerous examples of guys in the league the past 3-4 years who have had to pull the plug on their career because of injuries, even as a teenager.
It is sort of chilling that when you think back to Hinkley's last game that he was fighting and that he likely suffered a concussion due to being in that particular fight. But of course the medical problems he describes have less to due with that one fight and more to do with the past four years of injuries suffered in his career.
What we have to accept as good news is that he gets the medical attention to stop his career and protect his future health and well being.
4 or 5 years ago he'd rehab his injury and go back out there and suffer more head injuries and make his condition that much worse.
Most certainly I wish him all the best in the future.

Lane has apparently got the itch to play again as it looks like he signed with West Kent of the MHL

Hopefully he has the clearance from a lot of medical professionals…no need to risk happiness in life later on for playing another season/half of hockey.
If he does play, I wish him all the best…he’s a warrior and hopefully he can stay safe.
I do believe his father is the owner of the West Kent junior team?
