Do any of the players we picked today project to play in 24/25, or are they all a year or more away? I can see Nikko El khouri playing next year Totally agree on El Khouri. Batchilder is another steal from this draft that in any other year would play significant minutes. At least it's something to look forward too, unless he's moved at the deadline. Here's a snippet of his pre-draft report: "Our first defenseman comes in at number 5 with PEI’s own Jackson Batchilder, who currently plays for the Charlottetown Knights in the New Brunswick-PEI midget AAA league (NBPEIMU18HL). Batchilder had a monster performance at the QMJHL Cup where he was named to the tournament all-star team. His impressive skating ability was what set him apart for me, and although the points haven’t come for him quite yet at the U18 level I believe his tools give him a high offensive ceiling and loads of potential to unlock throughout the year."

El-Khouri is a steal and the staff knows it. Had over ppg at the Cross Border Challenge and Qmjhl cup. 32 pts in 42 games with a bottom team playing 10-12 minutes a night. Very fast and Skilled of the rush. Perfect fit for Moncton

El-Khouri is a bit faster, which makes the adaptation much easier at the junior level. Guess we’ll know the answer throughout the year but i see similar potentials down the road (18-19 yo)

Carrier 40gms - 34pts El Khouri 42 gms - 32 pts Carrier was more goal heavy. Trading Carrier was not something any of us would have wanted...especially for a 20yr old, but Vidicek will provide exceptional value and we can't forget Lacroix is the one who essentially screwed us by not playimg him (therefore Carrier demanding a trade out of Wildtown). This lowered his value as all teams knew he wanted out. We paid a VERY reasonable price to get Carrier last year (2023 13th overall + 2024 late first). Vidicek was always going to cost at minimum a 1st+ and that's what Carriers value had dropped to. We did recoup 2 3rds in the deal so the 2nd 1st we paid to get Carrier is the differential of our loss (2 3rds vs our 1st)...so really not that terrible considering Taylor Macdougalls hands were tied and we didn't pay alot to get Carrier in the first place.

Mixed thoughts on trading Carrier ... on the one hand, Vidicek was always going to cost something, and if moving Carrier allows us to retain other assets for use in future trades and/or rebuild, perhaps it is a wash. Given the timing of when Carrier was drafted vs. the Cats cycle, it was always unlikely that he was going to play out his four or five year Q career with us - he was going to be traded, either as part of building the 2024/25 contender, or as part of our rebuild in either 2025/26 or 2026/27. On the other hand, part of me feels they should have held off on trading him at this time. Who cares if he asked for a trade and was unhappy with his usage as a 16 y/o rookie? That coach is gone, come to camp at 17 and earn a bigger role with a fresh start under a new coach. I suppose then it becomes a risk/reward scenario - if he earns a big role in 24/25, he can be moved as a future or as part of a rebuild for more value than you got at the 2024 draft in the Vidicek trade ... but if he again fails to end up in a key role on the 24/25 version of the Cats, presumably his trade value drops even further by the time a future trade period rolls around.

I think we all hate to see him go especially with last years post draft interview saying he wanted the Cats to trade up to get him. In retrospect, his cost was fair and his returned value was a very good player that will help us this year Ala Philip Dupuis in our 2006 run. Dupuis 19 yr old season 62gms - 84 pts. Vidicek 19 yr old season 64gns - 88 pts. I wish Carrier would have changed his mind when he saw the changes, especially where he is a typical Gardiner Macdougall type player (hard working & skilled Ala Jakub Pelletier). As much as I dislike seeing Carrier leave, like you said he was almost foresure gone at some point anyways. I think the Macdougalls did a phenomenonal job at the draft and trading for key pieces to help win a championship. With the Q hosting this year the cost to do business is elevated, so I think you're right when you said it will probably end up being a wash.

DRAFT RECAP
Jackson Batchilder - 37th overall - Right shot defenseman who skates extremely well. Known more for his offensive game as he enjoys joining the rush and acting as a 4th forward. Defensively, I think his game is underrated. Often forcing attackers to the outside. Plays with a lot of confidence.
Niko El Khouri - 39th overall - Easily one of the top 3 fastest skaters in the draft class. Played on a bad team in the Quebec U18 League so he often went through some cold spells which hurt his confidence but still managed to put up decent numbers. I fully expect him to play another year of U18 on a better team with increased responsibilities.
Dominik Necak - 44th overall - Two way defenseman with above average vision. Good 1st pass. Capable of joining the rush but able to recover defensively if need be. Another year of U18 is best for his development. I can really see him and Batchilder as a solid pair in 2-3 seasons.
Victor Morrissette Richer - 57th overall - Over a PPG player last season in the Quebec High School circuit. Two way centre who plays with a lot of speed. Hopefully he can make the jump to the U18 level next season.
Max Hanley - 98th overall - Top rated Nova Scotia defenseman. Logged a lot of minutes as a 15 year old at the U18 level. Really like his physical game. Often stepping up on opposing forwards to deliver a clean check. Also, I like what he brings offensively as well. Really excited to track his development.
Will Cole - 105th overall - Not the biggest goalie but makes up for it with his quickness. Athletic. Always fights for pucks. I love his competitiveness.
Jacoby Weiner - 111th overall - Big American goalie at 6'3", 220 pounds. I don't know much about him, however I've heard he will be reporting to camp. How long he stays remains to be seen.
Lois Nasreddine - 123rd overall - Son of former NHLer and current assistant coach of the Dallas Stars, Alain Nasreddine. Similar to Weiner, I don't know a lot about him but he will be attending camp.
A few notes about the others....
- Loic Gallant is a 2007 born defenseman. One who could get a longer look at camp being a year older. - Spencer Thornborough won a gold medal with Team USA at the World Youth Olympics - Elliot Mullen was a territorial draft pick by the Truro Bearcats (MHL) - Xavier Trepanier and Caleb Desnoyers are step brothers
If you have any questions regarding those I've included or those I've left out, feel free to ask. I'll do my best to get the info requested.

Thornborough seems more like a shot in the dark type pick, but he plays a strong two-way game from what I saw of the YOG.

I’m kind of surprised that they went that heavy on defencemen - 4 of the first 8 picks were d. I guess they’re trying to plan for life without a bunch of their top D after this season.
