We all remember the statement that the Cat's wanted to add size to the line-up this year ( can't remember if this was this Torch's comment or Flynn's). Do you think they have addressed this issue? Overheard a conversation about this at the rink and thought it was an interesting question.

On defence, they seemed to have gained about 5 pounds per man. They lost MacDonald,185; Ouskun,193;Tolles,178; Goyens,190; Welton,190; and E manuele,192. This adds up to 1128, but they are replaced by Herr,195;Boyle,180;Eastman,180;Gomes,205;Baca,202 and Wilson,195. This adds up to 1157.Divided by the 6 involved, we gained just under 5 pounds per. On the forwards, we seemed to have lost a bit. We lost Gaudet,196;Watson,175 and LePage 176, a total of 547, or 182 per forward. Our new forwards who weren't here at the end of last year are Bezak,171, Sill,187; Brannon,180;MacAusland,151, Brown,176 and Stephens,180. This adds up to 1045,or174 per forward-8 pounds less than the average of the 3 we lost. Even if we take the 3 heaviest of the new forwards this year, they add up to 547,exactly same average as last year's 3.Since we know Bezak, Sill and MacAusland will be everyday players, we have lost some weight in forwards.

Thanks for the figures. A quick look out onto the ice backs up your figures...we are not much bigger than last year. However, maybe the numbers don't explain everything. Some returning players have added bulk while some of the new players are no different in terms of weight or height but they may play with more "grit" than some of the players they replaced. Unless you finish at the bottom and get in on the first few picks, size seems harder to draft the last few years ( size with skill that is...).

What the numbers don't show is that for every Brannon and Sill that we added, we also added a MacAusland. The end result is that we have MacLellan, Pianosi, Eagles, Morehouse, Brenton, Mangan, and MacAusland all 5' 9" or less.

Overheard a conversation about this at the rink and thought it was an interesting question. I think they did...if not size, then a more scrappy in your face team. Guys like Sill Brannon Baca add size plus some physical play...Marquardt using his size more would also help.

If they added size to the team...I would think this will make the team a bit slower/less mobile too?

If they added size to the team...I would think this will make the team a bit slower/less mobile too? Not necessarily ... it is not as if we all of a sudden became a huge team ... I think that guys like Brannon and Sill up front are fairly mobile, and I think the other big difference we will notice is that we have nine returning forwards, many of whom will be noticably bigger and strogner with another year of growth under their belts.

When somebody talks about adding size...would he be referring to younger players getting bigger from one year to the next ?

No ... it simply refers to being a bigger team than we were last year ... you can add size in different ways.
