The City is going to have a series look at a new arena in 2011, but the wild card in all this is the new gaming policy due out sometime this week, the Minister has already suggested 2 or more places could receive a Casino. Now combine that information with the fact that a convention centre is loosing some of it's luster and that leaves the door open for a Casino and new Arena to anchor a regional tourism destination. The parking situation is semantic, it's a problem they will solve with parking garages and or parking with a bit of a walk, it's an engineering problem and they will solve it. The city is looking to get and keep people downtown and the Casino and Arena combination has the most economic and entertainment bang for your buck there is. Aren't casinos' illegal in New Bruswick? As of this moment - yes ... check back in about 8 hours and the answer is likely going to be no ... big announcement coming today from the government. A casino license would be a huge carrot that a lot of companies will be after .... in Pittsburgh, one company was promising to fund a new arena in exchange for the license ... perhaps that will be part of the Moncton strategy?

The Province announced a new gaming policy will be unveiled very soon ... and its expected that Casinos will be part of it. There was already talk of placing a full sized casino in Moncton and and Racino in SJ ... with some smaller venues around the Province. Its expected that this is what the Province will support. They announced today that they are pulling most of the VLT's from bars ... and they will go in these casinos ... not sure what the difference is.

They announced today that they are pulling most of the VLT's from bars ... and they will go in these casinos ... not sure what the difference is. What I understood this morning (Fredericton radio station) was that the Minister of Finance announced that they were pulling back about 650 VLT's to cap the number at 2,000. Furthermore, it was said that NB was to remain a gaming (or gambling, not sure of the word used) destination. Then, the newsperson implied that it would likely come in the way of support for Casinos / Racinos as someone else noted. There was no timeframe mentioned with the above. On a side note and from what I understand (through work), parking garages aren't viable development options on their own unless astronomical prices are charged. They are usually built to sustain other developments or as an incentive of some sort.

I see ... so they will add 3000 parking spaces to the downtown by adding parking garages. Interesting ... So who will use these extra 3000 spaces when there is no event at the Coliseum ? You can't build parking garages that are only used on game/concert nights. The downtown uses up 1500 spaces ... maybe they need a few hundred more ... maybe not ... but they don't need 3000. Somebody would go broke building garages under your scenario. You can walk all you want ... but the downtown area has 1500 spaces. Are you willing to walk to Riverview ? Champlain Place ? One option is to have the parking garages for the downtown workers by day and casino/arena by night/weekend. There is a shortage of parking spaces right now downtown and parking is handled by private parking, revenue could be made up from those relocating from the existing parking. As for making for a speedy getaway after the game with so many cars in one spot falls right into the hands of the city as people would be more inclined to hang around, visit some resturants, take in the Casino, etc.

Just to add to the mix.
"IF" a new rink were to be built in Moncton and "IF" it were to be downtown. I would suggest it be placed in the area west of the newly extended Vaughan Harvey Blvd., across from the new Sobey's. There must be enough undeveloped land in that whole area, most of which is probably still owned by CN, for a rink and parking. Access is relatively easy, with Main Street east and west and Vaughan Harvey Blvd north and south. The downtown core is at least walkable from there for pre and post game activities.
