I've been visiting the Titan site on and off for the last 3-4 years...more off than on. I am not by any means an "expert" on the subject, but having played, coached for over 20 years, and scouted for 7 seasons at the Q level, I think I can bring comments and views to this board that are every bit as legitimate as the next guy.
However, the reason I'm more OFF than ON is that I have no time, nor energy to filter through piles and piles of insults, bullshit, supposed expert analysis, name calling and pissing matches to finally get to read 3 or 4 good posts concerning a given subject. If we took the trouble to calculate it, we'd probably see that in almost any thread, there are probably 60 - 70% of the comments made that are personnal attacks.
On some nights, I'd really like to come on and post, and even debate certain things, but when you have to read through 5-6-7 pages of idiocies before getting to the actual subject, you kinda get irritated and just call it a night.
I'll give it another try, but I doubt things will change. I'll just pack it in and leave more space for the experts.

Folks have seen me around here over the past years. I get fed up, dissapear for a while (people asking me where I've gone bla bla), then, I'll miss the old place and slowly let myself get drawn it again... Anyhoo, I think there has been some serious upgrading since the new site is here. Still a bit of crap, but all in all major upgrade...

I'd say that all I am talking about can be found in the "Mathieu Perreault" thread

I'd say that all I am talking about can be found in the "Mathieu Perreault" thread It's the same poster(s) ruining the board. Eventually he/it will be banned and things will function much smoother here imo. It's inevitable, or nobody will want to post here as you say. This board might be more active then a couple others but i'll take my quiet board where we talk about hockey over the active board with people fighting with each other constantly about what amounts to nothing by the end of it all.

I can understand a lot of your concerns aspen and it's even more the case when you try to follow all 12 sections or so of this board. We all want to be informed and contribute but can only dedicate so much time in our life to following the Q. What I personally do is try to somewhat quickly form opinions of individual posters and just skip over their posts once I've deemed that poster has nothing to add. If I see a page in a row of crap in a thread, I stop reading it.
The thing is now there's so much here that even if 75% of the board is crap there is still some good stuff. I think you just need the right approach in your mind to "filter" it because unfortunately it's never going to go away.

Also, the quality of a messageboard will only be as high as the moderation level. In the case here, if the mods banned everyone who occasionally contributes "garbage" it would be definite overkill, and the boards would cease to function. The mods are doing a great job here and IMO, the crap posts have been kept to a minimum. Some boards can function at a higher level because the mods are very strict and the general populus is very knowledgeable. Here, we have a mix of posters- some who are very knowledgeable, and some who are more casual. On top of that, you also have rivalries, which are ALWAYS going to create some hostility. There's no getting around it, so hopefully you can get past it and just avoid the less desirable topics. (generally those with 100 replies will contain a pissing match somewhere, lol)

There are two types of pissing matches here ... actual hockey debates on the merits and capabilities of teams/lines/coaches/players ... with differing opinions and allegiances dragging the thread on and on .... then there are the "out of towners aren't welcome here" pissing matches that actually have very little hockey related discussion.
If you remove one of them the board becomes so much better. If you remove both of them the board dies.
Personally, I enjoy a good debate on the merits of team vs team ... rivalry stuff ... and that rivalry can sometimes get a little heated ... lines are crossed ... but the rivalry is what makes all of these boards interesting and fun. I'm as guilty as the next guy of crossing the line and making it personal from time to time ... but I try to just stick to the topic being debated and away from the name calling ... but sometimes the line gets blurred.
There is nothing wrong with a little poking fun at one another ... as long as it is done in jest ... but that "jest" must be clearly conveyed. I try to follow a rule of thumb of "if I say it to your face and you would want to punch me in the nose" ... then I have crossed a line. So calling you an "f'ing A'hole" is over the line ... but maybe "bonehead" is not. It also depends on the history you have with the other person.
With Billy and chsb ... they argue until they are both blue in the face ... but when they are face to face in the same rink they shake hands and laugh over some of their debates ... I've seen that ... I've shaken chsb's hand myself last time I was in Bathurst and had a good laugh with him ... and later on Chsb brought a beer to Billy to pay off on a bet they had made ... all in the name of good fun. Most people don't know that and so they read their debates and input or infer animosity that isn't really there. They both believe strongly in their own opinions ... but both don't have a hate for each other that many suspect exists.

I'm as much a ribber as the next guy, but I do know my limits, and to sit here and argue for 2-3-4 hours at a time ...don't these people have families, jobs...or lives?

I think a lot of people who post on here through the day, do it on their downtime at work. Asking someone who posts on a messageboard if they have a life is a little cliche, don't you think?

Most of the time I spend here is while working, I may take a glance over the weekends but for the most part I get paid to post here

Point well taken, but I'm not referring to posters who come on occasionnally to add their comments to a discussion, but rather those who have something to add to every single thread...and usually, quite critical.
Please do keep on posting. As for myself, I guess I'll have to screen better.

This board might be more active then a couple others but i'll take my quiet board where we talk about hockey over the active board with people fighting with each other constantly about what amounts to nothing by the end of it all. The problem with the Bathurst board is a good poster (lets say "Lou" for shits and giggles) starts or enters a conversation about player potential and makes some good points. Then chsb replies and makes wild predictions or exaggerated statements in an effort to support Lou's thoughts... then Billy (or others) steps in to point out all the holes in chsb's arguments... ....10 pages later, Lou's attempt at a good discussion has turned into a 2 man pissing match. Personally, as long as the talk is sticking to hockey (as repetitive as it may be at times) I dont mind. But I know the efforts of some to have a decent convo have been ruined again. chsb keeps this board active, and always has an opinion so thats good. Its just that he often posts from a fantasy land where trees are made of ice cream and Titan players descend from the heavens when called upon, so it ignites a backlash

I pretty much agree with Steve UL. The boards are probably at their best when you get two knowledgable posters in a GOOD discussion where the occasional cheap shot/witty barb is thrown in towards the other poster/other poster's favourite team. The problem is endless pissing matches that just don't go anywhere. And since no one else has I'll freely admit that I spend my own time, not work time, on these boards.

A part of the problem with some of the pissing matches, not only on this board but other boards as well, is that you have a few people who think that only their opinion is right and other people's opinions are wrong. They don't realize or don't want to realize that other people have valid points or have their own opinions when it comes to disagreements about certain topics. I have seen a few times where a poster gives an opinion about something to get slammed by others because they didn't agree with what they said. No need for that.
Another factor is that some people know which buttons to push on another poster to get them going and they do it just to get them going. When I see 6 or 7 posts going back and forth between the same 2 or 3 posters I just go past them until I see a different name.
I also spend my own time on these boards also as I'm not always able to access the board from work.
