Mayer's got skills, everyone who has seen him play knows that. He's been very inconsistent though, and I wonder if the long haul of a 70 game schedule is taking it's toll. This type of schedule is likely more than he's ever encountered, though admittedly I don't know what his schedule consisted of before he came to Saint John. Either way, I'm thrilled we kept Fullerton, and I really think Mayer will come back next season in a big way. According to an interview with him on hockeysfuture.com in January he said he is playing about the same amount he was in Switzerland. IMO it's one of two things he was either way over hyped before he came over or he is having a really had time adjusting to the NA style game. One thing is certain tho he needs to get this worked out for next year or you guys are this years Moose Heads of next season. With the defence we'll have next year...........we could put you between the pipes ;D, Mayer will be fine next season...if not we got Passingham As far as this years Mooseheads....their not dead yet!

Next years defence? With the defence you have this year Mayer should be playing awsome with all the hype he was given. What happend to the "proven, world player" that was all the talk at the beginning of the season? I'm not shit disturbing im legitametly asking a question, with all the expectaions he had comming over; even when he played a poor game i was still expecting him to be better then this.

And a good question it is Rick......but unfortunately I don't think the guys that drafted him are reading this so I'll give you my thoughts.......I think that the coaching staff had an idea coming in that he would play part time for the first of the year and take the top spot after Christmas on a team in 5th or 6th place.....Turned out that at the break we were near the top and the decision to keep Travis Fullerton for a possible playoff push was made. This left the situation we have here which is a two goalie system where they have been playing fairly even time. One game Mayer will be hot then Fullerton gets a start and then maybe Mayers next start won't be for another 5 or 6 days. By the time he gets that next game it's so long between starts that it's hard to get in a rythm...and for a goalie you need to play it's hard to get into a groove when you don't have a true #1. He was amazing when he came back from the worlds, but not consistently. Next year it's his ball net.

Have you watched our defence lately they are not playing all that great either. Most goals are being scored down low and this is where the Defense is letting us down. Have to start winning all those little battles along the boards and in the corners. Give him time he will be fine.

I didn't see the game the other night but throughout most of the season he seems to get beaten high a lot while he's really good at stopping anything along the ice. Its my understanding that the European game involves more passes down low which would involve him doing the splits more often and moving from side to side. That seems to be his specialty.

Let's face it it is hard to get into a groove first year in the league as well as regularly splitting time with Fullerton. The experience he gets this year will help him next year and he should do fine being #1

The experience he gets this year will help him next year and he should do fine being #1 Hard to get in a groove? Young Jake Allen has been playing over Robert Mayer and he too is sitting on the bench. If he wan'ts playing time he's going to have to challenge for it and step up. Which is something I haven't particularly seen from a goaltender who was hyped up by scouting reports to be a 1st rounder in the NHL draft.
