Agent Provocateur Hockey The more he agitates, the happier Wildcats' Chris Morehouse is
Andrew Mcgilligan Telegraph-Journal Published Wednesday February 20th, 2008 Appeared on page B12
SAINT JOHN - The only time Chris Morehouse gets a cheer from the Harbour Station faithful is when he's heading to the penalty box.
And that's just the way the Rothesay native and captain of the Moncton Wildcats likes it.
Morehouse is an agitator, a pest, a guy who likes to hear the catcalls and boos cascade down on him when he's in an opposing rink.
"My job is not to be a fan favourite," Morehouse said. "I consider it a huge honour and means I'm doing something right," he said of the constant heckling he receives away from Moncton.
The Sea Dogs will travel to Moncton tonight to take on the Wildcats in a 7 p.m. start.
Fans have taken Morehouse-baiting to a new level in some rinks with signs and slogans. He recalls two in particular that made him laugh. In Prince Edward Island a sign read Morehouse, you're in our house now. His favourite came in a game in Cape Breton against the Screaming Eagles.
The sign read: Morehouse, serving up chicken and cheap shots with a picture of Morehouse's face on the body of a chicken.
"That was a pretty good one and like I said I consider it an honour," he said.
As for Sea Dogs fans, Morehouse said their signs are more direct.
"They usually say something like Morehouse sucks."
Saint John head coach and general manager Jacques Beaulieu said Morehouse plays the role well.
"He's definitely good at it, he's a pain in the backside when he's on the ice," said Beaulieu who referenced current NHL penalty minutes leader and former Sarnia Sting forward Dan Carcillo as one of the best pests he's coached against.
The 20-year-old has been asked to do more this season than get under opposing players skin. After the holiday trading period, Morehouse was named captain of the Wildcats, a role he never envisioned for himself when he came into the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
"I was invited to training camp last minute," he said of the beginning of the 2005-06 season.
"I made the team the day before the season started."
His rookie season was the same year Moncton hosted the Memorial Cup. Morehouse said he took a lot from that year and has applied it to his time as captain.
"It was a year where I sat back and learned a lot from guys like Philippe Dupuis and Keith Yandle," he said.
He also got some advice from Hall of Fame player Pat Lafontaine. He and his teammates got the chance to visit the former NHLer in his home on Long Island during their Memorial Cup season. Ted Nolan, the then coach of the Wildcats, coached Lafontaine during the 1996-97 season with the Buffalo Sabres.
"The main thing he told us was to earn your keep, earn everything you get from hockey and that really stuck with me," he said.
He's tried to impart that same philosophy to his teammates this season.
"I try and tell them to appreciate the game because your time in junior goes by so fast," he said.
As for what fans he'll be drawing the ire of next season, he said he's been contacted by both university and professional teams, but hasn't made a decision yet.

Any organization that allows kids to believe that it is a good thing to intentionally piss others off has some serious problems.

Bj get a life!!! Dammit this is hockey not church!!! Every team has them. He is just great at it. He took Stich out of the game in Moncton last month and he was one of the few that didnt have the flu. Love him or hate him, his job is far from easy at his size!!! He may be hated but well respected for how hard he does his job. So when Brett pummels his opponents are we a bad organization? Its not like we think he is out there to score!!! Im glad you hardly make it to the rink. You would prob be just one more that sits on his hands and complains!!! Well back to the pool Sunny Florida is awesome!!!

there is a difference between a guy who fights and someone whose entire game is to make opponents play at a lower level. He does not contribute positively. That is not a way to win.

When I learn what hockey really is? That sounds like a Leaf fan... Hockey is a sport of power and grace. I like to see the stars playing at the top of their game, so that it is that much sweeter when someone like Mike Thomas really lines one up, or someone like Michael Kirkpatrick does his best Sami Pahlsson routine and works harder than the other team's star. THAT IS HOCKEY.

This threeaad is about the game tonight, RIGHT??
In any case another sub .500 team and the second worse record in the Q. The Dogs were at the rink at 7 and they left at around 5:30 yesterday so I have no idea what they did all day but that is a long day just prior to going on the road for a game in Moncton. I am saying that they are having some concerns and looking at what to do realizing they are headed in the wrong direction heading into the playoffs. I smell and upset 7 - 3 Cats and I hate the Cats.
