QUEBEC, QC --- The Saint John Sea Dogs opened their three-game tour of Quebec on a losing note on Wednesday night, dropping a 7-6 decision to the Quebec Remparts at Le Colisee Pepsi.
In what turned out to be an unabashed exhibition of offensive production, the Remparts managed to hold on for the one-goal victory, improving their record to 13-10-0-1 while handing Saint John just their sixth regulation loss of the year.
All four goalies that dressed ended up seeing playing time on Wednesday, as both teams’ offensive players performed exceptionally well on the night, combining to cook up a baker’s dozen worth goals in a wild game that saw countless changes in momentum and several lead changes.
After the opening forty minutes had produced a 4-4 deadlock, the Remparts outpaced the Sea Dogs by a score of 3-2 in the third period, with Angelo Esposito scoring the eventual game-winning goal midway through the frame.
Esposito’s third period marker was his second of the night, while Joey Ryan, Kelsey Tessier, Marc-Olivier Vallerand (2), and Maxime Sauve also scored for Quebec.
Meanwhile, Ryan Sparling, Francois Gauthier, Steven Anthony, Scott Howes (2), and Alexandre Picard-Hooper all registered tallies for Saint John in a losing effort on Wednesday.
The Sea Dogs’ loss came in spite of their special teams dominance over the Remparts, as the visitors went 5-for-8 on the power play on Wednesday night while proving successful on seven of their eight penalty kills.
Alexandre Picard-Hooper registered the first big scoring chance for the Sea Dogs on Wednesday, gaining the puck in transition prior to racing into Quebec’s zone, beating a pair of defensemen with some nifty stick handling manoeuvres and getting off a hard, low shot that starting Remparts net minder Jonathan Roy managed to stop near the five minute mark of the first period.
The Remparts then earned a power play opportunity at the 10:23 mark of the opening frame when Scott Howes was assessed a two-minute minor for boarding. The Sea Dogs penalty killing unit, the second-best defensive special teams squadron in the QMJHL entering Wednesday night’s contest, kept Quebec’s top offensive guns at bay during the brief numerical discrepancy however, with Chris DiDomenico managing to register a strong scoring chance short-handed, very nearly earning his 18th goal of the season with a solid backhand shot that Roy managed to impede the progress of.
Saint John produced Wednesday night’s first goal when Picard-Hooper beat Roy with a wrist shot from just outside the slot to register his sixth goal of the season on the power play and give the visiting squad from Port City a 1-0 lead 13:45 into the game.
The Sea Dogs doubled their lead at the 18:03 mark of the opening frame when Simon Despres rifled a slap shot that Roy gave up a generous rebound on upon making the initial save; Steven Anthony was then able to grab the loose puck, spin and fire a shot that beat Roy to the blocker side, earning his third goal of the season in the process.
Quebec then got on the scoreboard with 1:13 remaining in the first when Marc-Olivier Vallerand beat starting Saint John goalie Robert Mayer with a backhand from close range to make the score 2-1. The Remparts then tied the game 0:54 later when Joey Ryan snuck a point shot past a screened Mayer to make the score 2-2 as the first intermission got underway.
Saint John regained their one-goal lead 2:37 into the second period when Ryan Sparling took a pass from Alexandre Leduc in the corner prior to skating to the front of Quebec’s net and tucking a low shot past Roy to earn a power play marker, his fourth man-up tally of the season. Chris DiDomenico then thought he’d given Saint John a 4-2 lead a moment later, but his seemingly successful wrist shot was called back by officials upon video review.
Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Angelo Esposito then tied the match 3-3, beating Mayer with a wrist shot from the slot to earn his 11th goal of the season at the 5:34 mark of the middle frame.
Another power play tally by the Sea Dogs then made the score 4-3, as Francois Gauthier took a corner-pass from Ryan Sparling and banged the puck past Roy, bringing an unceremonious end to the young net minder’s evening in the process as Kevin Desfosses was subsequently installed between the pipes by the Remparts’ coaching staff.
Soon after Desfosses’ entry into the match, Quebec earned their fourth goal of the night, tying things up yet again, this time 4-4 as Vallerand tallied his second marker of the night with Felix Petit picking up an assist on the scoring play.
With 5:05 remaining in the second, Chris DiDomenico was hauled down on a breakaway by Mikael Tam and was immediately awarded a penalty shot by officials. Desfosses was able to stop the Sea Dogs sniper from converting on his attempt however, throwing out an impressive poke check to keep Saint John from re-taking the lead.
Neither team was able to muster a significant scoring opportunity in the final quarter of the middle frame, as Wednesday’s contest reached the forty minute mark with the score knotted at four apiece.
Regulation’s final frame saw the Remparts take their first lead of the night in the third minute of play, as Maxime Sauve scored a transition goal to make the score 5-4 at the 2:19 mark of the third period.
The home team’s lead was short-lived however, as Scott Howes redirected an Alexandre Picard-Hooper pass to the back of the Remparts net at the third period’s 3:56 mark.
Quebec then re-took the lead 0:57 after Howes’ goal, with Kelsey Tessier bringing an end to Robert Mayer’s night with a well-placed wrist shot, prompting a change in goal for Saint John as veteran net minder Travis Fullerton entered the match with his team trailing by one.
Fullerton was beaten by Angelo Esposito high to the glove side soon after he entered the game however, as Quebec gained a 7-5 lead on the strength of the 18-year old forward’s 12th goal of the season.
Yet another power play goal from the Sea Dogs, again off the stick of Scott Howes, then pulled the visitors back to within one of the Remparts’ lead with 6:02 remaining in regulation, as the offence factory continued to run at maximum capacity.
Despite some high-quality chances in the late going however, the Sea Dogs were unable to produce an equalizer in the dying minutes, with Desfosses managing to keep the puck out of the net to earn the hard-fought victory for Quebec.
The Sea Dogs continue their Telus Division trek on Friday night, hitting the ice against Chicoutimi prior to facing Baie-Comeau on Saturday.
