Support the Sea Dogs Sports Mailbag
Published Wednesday October 3rd, 2007 Appeared on page B9
I am a Saint Johner. I attended the home opener of the Sea Dogs a few weeks ago with much anticipation after the much-hyped press they were getting. I was excited about this year. They lost. Oh well, that happens.
There was a good crowd on hand, but I have not seen the same crowds recently. After that initial loss, look what they have done. They took out Lewiston handily, they beat first-place Moncton fair and square.
It's exciting hockey. They've got some tough guys who like to mix it up, they also have a few superstars who can score at will, yet we can not fill Harbour Station. I have done my part by purchasing a season ticket, my company has also bought a few. It's the least we can do. It's a great evening out with family or friends. They have spent a great deal of time and effort putting a first-class team together, and it does show.
I have heard all the excuses from the "concession prices are too high" or "they need to be wining' or "ticket prices are too high." I can list a bunch of them. Let's stop moaning. The fact is that there are a lot of exciting things happening in our city lately, we should all be proud of that. One of those exciting things is our Quebec Major team! Why not show an increase in support for the Sea Dogs, and who knows, maybe they'll win it all this year? I am a Saint Johner, and I will do my part. Will you?

I'd love to see more people go to the games and I think once the colder weather gets here it will start to impove coupled with the team playing better people will soon start to see this if they haven't already. These fans may not be die hard fans but their still butts in the seats! ;D As for concession prices personally I have no major concern with this yeah they are a little pricey but have ya gone to a movie lately lol 9 bux for a whatered down pop and a bag of popcorn???

The general public in Saint John will come out in bigger numbers to Harbour Station when the team starts to win more than they lose. It has always been a situation where the casual fan has come out when it is the "cool" thing to do. The hardcore fans will be there win or lose but the other 3500 seats will remain empty until it becomes "the thing" to do on a Friday or Saturday night. The same was the case when the AHL was here. When it was cool to go, the place was full, when we were in the tank you couldn't give tickets away.

Bottom line is its an Industrial city and these rednecks only support winners!!! Ive said this all along, thats what I hate about Saint John!!! you have so much here for a small city and nobody gets off their asses to support shit!!! They all live in a bubble or something I go to baseball, sea dogs senior a hockey coach and still work 6-7 days a week. Live in the ratrace of a big city and you wil realize what a gem Saint John is. Damm some people are so lazy!!!!

No kids? Football, soccer, hockey tryouts, homework issues, etc. Once the summer & fall activities wind down and there's not much left but soccer and basketball, and kids' schedules are nailed down, more will come. A lot I work with want to come, but there's just so much going on they can't fit it all in

Damm some people are so lazy!!!! I agree with you I coach as well and get out to as many different sports events as I can. This city just doesn't get it, they complain when they don't have anything then complain when they get it and complain again after they lose it. I get so tired of excuses and complaining if you are not interested in the Q or the Sea Dogs just don't go and be done with the complaining. Otherwise get out and catch some games you'll like it.

Archer I agree with you 100% The stuff that went to Freddy and Moncton first should suprise nobody> Saint John people make it so hard to bring things here, then complain nothing comes!!!! This city has been run by old people for 100 years and it will never change!!! I am not talking about council or Mayors, I'm taling about the REAL clout and $$$ behind the keeping Saint John old and slow..........nowe it seems QUIET at HS is on their list!!!

Season always starts out slow for attendance no way will they have a sold out crowd every game or as packed as the season opener. regardless of Concession prices or the team winning or losing. Just wont happen.
